Title: Best Bags 2021
Post by: billyb on January 27, 2021, 02:19:51 AM
Having been thoroughly dissapointed by my Shrey Wheelie Duffle, I'm in the market for a new bag. This time I'm looking for a Wheelie instead of a duffle.

The best wheelie I've ever had was a duplex GM bag that had a foam padded bat cave underneath. I got it on here for like £40! Is there anything that good left on the market?

Phantom's bags always look amazing. @hell4leather cricket bags this year look great too!

Can you tell us why you are thoroughly disappointed with Shrey, because I was literally going to suggest that when I read the title.

+1 for Hell4Leather. Not the 2021 model but i picked a wheelie up 2nd hand last year and the design and quality is exceptional. And its huge!

The new Scott wheelie duffle looks very nice and has pretty much all the features I'd want in a bag - https://scottcricketbats.co.uk/collections/luggage/products/pro-duffle-bag

I'd have got one in a second if I hadn't got a new bag at the end of last season.

I've got a GM original duffle which is amazing, I'm sure they do a wheelie bag if you like the one you had previously?

Not completely on topic because I can't recommend a specific wheelie, but the thing that has annoyed me the most with the wheelie and duffles I've owned is the p!ss poor quality of the zips used. Each time it has been zip failure that's meant I've had to get a new bag.  Which is a shame, as my Kookaburra pro duffle was excellent apart from that.

If there is a brand out there that can specify in their design, or manufacture, good quality zips (e.g. YKK) then you will have me as a customer.

I take my kit to games on the back of a motorbike, so working zips are important. As a biker, I've also found out about quality zip makers and why it's worth paying a bit more for them because zips are everywhere on clothing.

I fell foul of this. My kook duffle zips split after five games. Bought the latest B3 black wheelie. The zips are heavy duty, I can definitely recommend it...

My Gn predator duffle went basically at every single zip at the same time. Had it for two years which is about borderline acceptable. Just amazing that 4/6 game up in the space of maybe a week.

On the hunt for a new, preferably non wheeled, duffle with as many pockets as possible. If anyone has any recommendations.

My Slaix Pod one lasted ages and the zips were solid, I have the B3 wheelie duffle - it too is excellent and has solid zips.

I had the GN prestige bag before that. Loved it, the design. The zip went on the bottom compartment after a season. Standard zips don't seem to be up to the job!

Seeing as so many people are interested in why I don't like the Shrey wheelie duffle, I'll try and do a fuller post at some point in the coming days about it.

For now though...
The quality is excellent on that padded front with nice materials, but elsewhere it is lacking. The bat pockets have very limited protection inside and aren't sufficiently padded (instead of fitting like 6 bats, 2 or 3 padded pockets would have been a better option). They also seem to strike the base of the wheels if you use the most logical two. Some parts of the materials used are a bit rough around the edges, and it isn't especially comfortable to carry as a duffle (and it is very big for a duffle, to be fair).

Some parts are brilliant though - I love the mesh dividers inside two side pockets (great place to store balls and accessories. It is spacious and has more than enough room to fit everything you could need.

It is a decent bag but it is let down by the execution in places, and I was underwhelmed with the finish compared to other brands at a similar price point in the USA. I think they cut corners in some places. However, the zips so far seem pretty decent, unlike many bags I've had from GN and Kookaburra.

Now that I have a proper car and I have to do a lot more driving to get anywhere (public transport is pretty rubbish here), I think I'd just prefer a top-end wheelie bag and be done with it. Screw the duffles for a while! I'll stick with the Shrey until I've netted a few times. Maybe it will grow on me... but I doubt it!

In terms of the bags I want to check out...
1. The new H4L offerings.
2. Any new Phantom offerings.
3. GM's Wheelies.
4. Another forum brand.

Phantom is always top notch. I have their 2020 duffle (not wheeled version) and it is spectacular. If you have space in your car, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the top end aero stand up wheelie bag. It is the best wheelie bag that has ever been made IMO. But it won’t fit the trunk of smaller cars.

I'm putting something similar together on a 2020 H4L wheelie duffle after 1 years use. So you may want to hold fire on a new purchase, as the grass may not necessarily be greener.  To be honest, I think the whole cricket bag industry is quite frankly overpriced tat.

Someone earlier mentioned YKK zippers. That's exactly the sort of spec we need along with better padding and reinforced materials for high wear areas, such as the base and shoe pockets. Deployable rain covers that fold back away into a pocket and internal frames that maintain rigidity to stop bags flopping over. My photography camera bag has a 20 year warranty, it’s currently 9 years old and I have no reason to doubt that it'll have a 20th birthday and that carries more weight than my cricket bag does. Sure it cost over double, but the cost of ownership could potentially be less than £15 per year. Whereas my cricket bag is more likely to be £40 a year.

Sorry, that turned into a bit of a generalised rant.  :(

😆 The falling over duffle issue really annoyed me when I returned to playing recently. So i specifically made mine with side inserts and a sturdy base to help it stand even when empty. Makes life that little bit easier I find!

I had a Newbery SPS bag that lasted 20 years. It's still just about ok now, but a bit bashed about. I don't know if their new ones are as good, but my nephew has a Salix bag which is very similar build quality wise. High quality material, thick waterproof lined shoe compartment and re-enforced base.

I changed it 2 season's ago from the Kookaburra Pro Players wheelie, just because I wanted a bag with bat tunnels. The quality is nowhere near as good as the Newbery. The outer tarpaulin type material is excellent, but I'm not sure the zips will stand the test of time. The bat tunnels have given way at the bottom already, so they stick out inside the bag. There's no shoe compartment either, so had to get a boot bag. It stands up very well, but is too tall and only just fits in my large boot. Looks good, but was expensive and unlikely to last long term. I'd be looking at Salix or Newbery again if I need to replace it in a year or two.

Salix are the best quality bags I have seen. Materials are top drawer - wheels, zips and handles. Classy and durable. The reason i moved away from the salix pod pro is that they didn't really have the extra little bits that most modern bags have got - valuables pocket, drinks holders, zipped compartments inside etc. It was just One large compartment and a shoe section. With all the stuff i take to matches it just became a bit of a muddle

Any sponsors/brands/manufacturers want to post on here as to why decent bags are so scarce?

i realise you might say costs increase, so prices go up, and sales down.  But YKK zips cost only a couple of pounds more max (God, I'm turning into a zipper bore).  And as someone wrote above, we would average a reasonable price increase over its extended life.

Is it penny pinching? Lack of attention or control over detail? Built in obsolescence? Something else?

Yes this is the main reason I have refrained from Salix. If they can catch up to some of the better bag designs / compartmentalization, it would be a slam dunk.

Totally, and that is partly why I'm annoyed by my Shrey bag... It wasn't cheap. It's crazy that pads and gloves can be over £100 now too.

Best cricket bag I've had so far is a Phantom wheelie duffel. Well made and there seem to be a few variations of the design out there too. Only problem is the wheels are too close together so you have to take care when inserting your two bats into their sleeves. Otherwise you can damage the toe as the wheel intrudes into the sleeve.

Best value bag I've used for cricket is this one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Montrose-Offshore-Waterproof-PVC-Kit-Bag-Large-Red-90cm-x-30cm-x-30cm/254442068054?hash=item3b3dedd856:g:QOkAAOSwhY1d5oFt&shqty=1&isGTR=1#shId (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Montrose-Offshore-Waterproof-PVC-Kit-Bag-Large-Red-90cm-x-30cm-x-30cm/254442068054?hash=item3b3dedd856:g:QOkAAOSwhY1d5oFt&shqty=1&isGTR=1#shId)

Well made, waterproof and the zips won't break in a hurry. Only negatives are it comes with three separate sections so I've cut a square in one inner wall so I can pass my pads through. Also no reinforcement in the base but when I sling it over my shoulder I wear it vertically so there's no real stress forcing it to bend.

I've little doubt that this would be higher quality than most of the cricket bags, despite the £25 price tag.  It seems to be one of those products where you can near enough stick the word cricket on it, and charge 3 times the price.  A bit like the word wedding, and cake.

Golf bags are the same!

The zips always go! Linings aren’t stiched well enough. And the top parts wear meaning they cause shaft rub (this may set off a few forum members  ;) )

It’s almost like companies don’t want them to last so you buy more products...

Just on this bag - I would suggest that any cricket company could get a simple bag like this, made and bring it on to the market for it's RRP of of £41 (https://www.montrosebag.com/product/offshore-kit-bag-large/ (https://www.montrosebag.com/product/offshore-kit-bag-large/)). However it looks like it's made of quite a flexible material that will offer very little protection, it looks like it only has one main large compartment and one small zip.

Whereas most cricket bats have a lot of additional extras; such as being made with very thick and strong material (most top quality bags are 1500+ denier (Denier is used to determine the thickness of the fibers in the tent fabric. It's a unit of density based on the length and weight of a yarn or fiber. A single strand of silk is considered 1 denier.)), most bags have padded pockets/separate section for cricket bats, hard bottomed, trolley handles, wheels, lots of different types and sizes of internal and external pockets, 'cool zones', boot pockets with different materials, multiple lengths of zips + branding (whether this is printed/embroidered/badge etc), the list goes on. All of these things are additional costs of labour and materials which bunk up the cost of the bag.

Montrose do offshore bags don’t they, I’d be surprised if any cricket bags were harder wearing than those things.

Yep, all true. Yet they all fall apart all too soon. At least that seems to be the consensus here.

If I were in this business, I'd contact Montrose or similar. Every so often the customers would need a new bat or softs to match the bag.

I have been using the GN Test Wheelie.  All round solid bag with a large capacity, good compartmentalisation and decent build quality by the standards of cricket bags.

It is a wheelie bag and runs well with good maneuverability but has sufficient rigidity to stand up-right.

(https://i.postimg.cc/tJhh9F1n/20210208-095545.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/wRjtVyQ9)

(https://i.postimg.cc/2jvddNHj/20210208-095600.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/z3zR56Z4)

Top layer has a compartment for a helmet, a 'wet compartment' for kit and towels and two pockets that run the length  of the bag, one of which has a valuables zip pocket inside.

(https://i.postimg.cc/mD7c9BT0/20210208-095648.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/vgHHFRgz)

Bat storage for 3 bats.

(https://i.postimg.cc/05dM2kWS/20210208-095618.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Lh56xpM4)

Bag opens up with two internal sections.  I use one for 1 set of pads, two sets of gloves, a thigh pad set and box.  There is more room to carry additional items.  The other has two sets of spikes in boot bags, two sets of whites, two playing tops, two base layers, two jumpers and 4 pairs of socks as well as a section to keep food in.

This is the bag i referenced earlier in the thread. Agree that storage and compartments are top class. Be wary of strain on, or overpacking, the lower section. As mentioned the red lining and zip tore within a few uses. I suspect storing it upright, the large equipment in that section lean against the thin red lining and tear.

Hope you have better luck with it. It is a great bag otherwise...

I have been using the GN Test Wheelie.  All round solid bag with a large capacity, good compartmentalisation and decent build quality by the standards of cricket bags.

It is a wheelie bag and runs well with good maneuverability but has sufficient rigidity to stand up-right.

(https://i.postimg.cc/2jvddNHj/20210208-095600.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/z3zR56Z4)

Top layer has a compartment for a helmet, a 'wet compartment' for kit and towels and two pockets that run the length  of the bag, one of which has a valuables zip pocket inside.

(https://i.postimg.cc/mD7c9BT0/20210208-095648.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/vgHHFRgz)

Bat storage for 3 bats.

That looks really nice, @SD ! What has the durability been like?

Very good so far.  The exterior of the bag has been very tough and resistant to the inevitable bumps and scrapes (and, after last year, getting changed in car boots).  No problem at all with any of the internal pockets or zips.

I replaced it with a previous GN bag which had no faults after 3 seasons' use (I only replaced it because I wanted a bag with better compartmentalisation).  I also use a GN duffle (the prestige) and have had no issue with this either.  The build quality of the GN bags is the best I have used from the cricket  bag market.

So far I haven't had any issues, but I will look out for this.  Generally speaking, I try to balance the bag out for greater stability when wheeling it around so this hasn't been a particular problem yet.

It is the compartmantalisation that I went for with this bag.  I am old enough to have used one of the old style coffins which very quickly became an infection hazard with dirty spikes, damp whites and wet towels rolling around on the way home from games and where nothing could ever be found easily in it.  The modern bag is a big improvement on that!

Exactly why I chose it and I do hope it serves you better than I found. I think as you say if you're balancing everything out you're minimising any issues. Wish mine had lasted, they're stunning bags

Anybody used the England New Balance/Shrey coffin style bags?

Fairly extensively, they are the same as the Adidas ones, ECB get them made by a company who wrap them in branding to fit the current manufacturer and sponsors etc.

Personally I’m a fan, one main section with 3 small pockets on the inside, not for those who like lots of sections but really durable with travel, airlines, cars etc

Only caveat is that they are massive, and because of their rigidity, may not fit all trunks. I have a smaller sedan, and I needed to put mine on the backseat.

I have taken the plunge and gone for a GM Original duffle to replace by Aero wheelie bag. Will let you know thoughts - opted for it due to decent reviews and the fact I don't need to remortgage to afford it!

Been looking to get a big duffle for next season. Had a small one due to a 2-mile uphill return from training at Uni, but can finally grab myself a bigger one.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I think I’ve narrowed it down to these three

I have been through a couple of bags (GM, Kooka etc) and never particularly lasted very long. However bought a D&P bag brand new off a made 2 years ago and never looked back. Wheelie and duffle (it is big but walkable/bikeable as I wanted it for the same reason), big main pocket with shoe pockets as many of them are, mine has 2 side pockets for WK gloves and bits and bobs (however I believe this is now 1)...main thing I have found is its well built, brilliant material, good quality zips and to be honest can't really fault it! Its by no means the cheapest at £99 but for me it's the build quality and comfort I have found in addition to the fact its wheelie and a duffle...I also paid nowhere near that so that was a bonus 😂 I don't know if others have ever tried D&P but IMO in regards to the bag they are well worth considering.

I took delivery of the B3 D145 yesterday and am really impressed. The materials and zips seem to be of very high quality and with the front panel being access to the main section and running a decent length you can absolutely use it as a full wheelie if you lay it down. In 'wheelie' mode it is a bit wider and less high than wheelies of equivalent capacity (due to pad pockets on the side) - but capacity wise it is pretty big and carries pads, multiple gloves, 2 pairs of shoes, thigh pads, helmet, clothing etc with room to spare. The dimensions are great for me personally as it fits in my car much more easily.

Its a big bag if you're carrying it as a duffle - but for me I will only use it in that configuration to track across the outfield for training or up stairs at away grounds etc, so nice to have the option! It also stands up reasonably well in the event that we are allowed in changing rooms this year and you need to save a bit of space.

Proof will be in the pudding in terms of longevity - but at the moment I can see me using it until it falls apart which doesn't happen often for me with cricket gear!

Had a few outdoor nets already this year so my 1 season plus two net old Phantom has just thrown a boot cave zip.

Also I put my hand in to rummage around the bottom and I caught my fingers on a fixing bolt for the wheels. They must stick out about 2cm.

That and the fact I have to be gentle when putting the bats in the sleeves otherwise they hit the hard plastic covering the wheels then I'd have to say it looks well built but is lacking in the final build quality.

If I were looking for a bag, I'd be looking at a B3 (no relation).

I believe most, if not all wheelie duffles have the issue of the wheel casing bumping into the bats. They are also substantially heavier than non wheel duffles. This prompted me to switch to the non wheel phantom from last year - it’s a great bag, though with the curtailed season, hasn’t really been abused much yet.

Good brand. Were sold out of Just Sport in Newcastle. Had bat, pads and gloves from them a year or two back, really good quality and good prices, would recommend. Would imagine the bags are of a similar quality.

Odd then that you pay a premium for a bag that is specially designed to protect your gear and that hasn't been thought of.

I had a Aero tour bag. Protection was fine but while pulling it along it would become unstable and fall over. I'm 6ft'ish but not the first impression you want to make while travelling from the car park to the oppo clubhouse.

No bag is perfect for individual needs, but you'd hope they would get the basics right.

While I don't think Kookaburra have a wheeled duffle. Nobody seems to mention them, yet they seem well put together.

Most do, just depends if the brand has really had any input in the design or has just used the bog standard off the shelf option - for what it's worth the rear bat compartment on mine was specifically designed so that the wheels don't come into contact with the bats and I'm yet to have any issues to date

Noooooooooo.   In Kookaburra bags, pain runs deep.   Mine started falling apart in less than a year.  All zips have failed at some point which means pads just fall out continually.  Tried and failed to fix.  Mine was A £90 duffle.  Top of the range.  Oh and the shoe compartment only takes shoes less than size 9.

I'm not sure if anyone else on the forum took advantage of the offer JN Garrard had on Instagram recently, clearing some of their workshop stock? I managed to get one of the large duffles for £35 which seemed like good value. My old GN duffle was falling apart, zips busting and didnt have a good space for bats. I knew it was time for an upgrade. According to the website, there are 2 left, however they are currently still £85.

(https://i.postimg.cc/rdGJ5bH4/IMG-6494.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/rdGJ5bH4)

(https://i.postimg.cc/LqrJ66DB/IMG-6495.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/LqrJ66DB)

(https://i.postimg.cc/8jtsfbwC/IMG-6497.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8jtsfbwC)

As you can see, there is plenty of space inside the bag, for pads, gloves, maybe even spare bats if you're not worried about them getting a ding. The one thing I like from a bag is the option to separate a clean change of clothes from kit and whites. With this bag, you don't get that option, unless you want to cram it in one of the side pockets.

There are 2 bat pockets at the back. They are only padded on one side however, that is the side that you wear on your back. I dont know how feasible it is, but it would be nice to have the interior wall padded as well.

As seems to be standard these days, there is a shoe pocket, which is nice to have. I haven't tried my size 11 spikes in there yet, but hopefully they fit otherwise its going to a space for the whites  ;)

The side pockets are generously long, but fairly narrow. I'm not sure what these will be good for. Perhaps whites or a towel if I'm not fussed about them being folded nicely. I believe there is enough room to enclose a bat, although you might have the handle sticking out of the top. Not the end of the world by any means. The back of bag is padded and also has padded straps. Very nice. There is a zip pocket on the rear for valuables. My last bag didn't have this, so it is a welcome addition.

Finally, the most important part, the stand-test. I can report the bag does stand with and without equipment in albeit what's the point without any equipment.

Overall, a nice bag where the materials feel of a good quality. The test, like with any bag, is to see how the zips hold off. I'll be happy if I can get 4 seasons out of it!

Oh no, I’m sorry. I was hoping he’d have a few bats in there too

Will pads not fit in the side pockets?

They fit. Is that what they're designed for?? It would be the first time I've seen anybody take pads from the side pockets. :D

Yea that’s been quite a common design for a few years, it does help keep the bag balanced in my opinion and leaves a huge main section not all use due this purpose, I for example keep keeping pads in the side pad pockets as I found getting the pads in abs out the side sections a bit tight but that’s the fun you can pack in any way you like

I can see how keeping pads would slot in there perfectly. I must've just been out of the loop with bag designs, its been a while since shopping for one! I've always thought its been hard to separate towels, whites and clean clothes, amongst all the kit and equipment. I'll probably use them for that.

I do exactly this as well. Put my keeping pads in the side pockets.
