Everyone favourite Smith has left the stage.
-
The role that Smith had has been created and binned a few times over the years. He may of brought some different thinking to selection but as a supporter of England this looks like a good move.
Hard to tell who was behind some of the terrible player relations on the tour of India but Smith has precious for casting out players with a flea in their ear.
I think someone on here used the phrase 'disposable players' which was very apt.
The scouting structure remains in place with more power to Silverwood and the captains. I don't really think we need a chairman of selectors/national selector or whatever it's titled.

Just came to post about this
For anyone not sure what we're on about:

Absolutely wonderful news, get in the bin

Get the impression that rather than the role not being needed. That Smith just wasn’t popular, and this was the easy way to give him the elbow.
-
Good riddance.
-
Yes some reports he wasn't popular with some players, I guess it's a job that comes to a certain extent with the territory. Lacking people skills also mentioned which is no surprise.
Team selection seems to go in phases, head of selection, then back to coach and captain, then a national selector etc.
I don't think anyone but coach and captain should pick the final 11 but I believe Australia, if it still applies that is, get the team coach and captain are given. So different ways of doing it.
-
He's made a lot of money... Will have a steady job paid a lot of money very soon I'm sure.. feathered a nest somewhere.. this is just tactical
Wish he'd never grace ANY cricket venue/panel/committee/post ever again
-
Give it five years and there'll be complaints the coach and captain have too much power and a selector will be brought back again! Good to see Taylor has kept his job of keeping an eye on the counties.
-
I read it that
1. Smith is not popular
2. ECB has blown all its cash on the hundred
3. Win win.
4. As Edge says, in a few years James Taylor will be made chairman of selectors.
-
Silverwood accountable for performances so makes sense he can select the squads. the world is changing or has changed and players need more careful management, like it or not, its just the way it is now.
Never liked Smith since the day he ditched Kent for Middlesex!
-
James Taylor is just an Ed Smith mini-me. Good that he’s still going to be traipsing around the country looking for non-existent fast bowlers and quality spinners, but any role he has should only ever be in a guidance capacity.
The whole selection panel thing is outdated nonsense. Should be more like football... scouts find the potential, present it to the coach/captain, then Silverwood, Root etc makes the final decisions as to whether they are good enough, the right fit etc.

There has to be someone watching the county players, the England coach/captain are away with international cricket almost the whole year. It's cyclical - coach/captain as selector until people start to question why noone ever gets dropped and where the new blood is coming from. Then a selector gets appointed, makes changes and brings in new players, until people start to question their judgement/why are so many changes being made, so they get removed and responsibility handed back to the coach/captain, until people start to question why noone ever gets dropped... etc etc.

I agree with the general opinion here. Coach should be picking the squads and final 11 with support from number of skilled and trusted individuals. The coach should have the final say as the buck stops with him really.
Others can pick development 11s if appropriate which would triage some of the best talent for the head coach to focus on.

Bring back the England v England A games!

Now you’re talking!
This is going to have a hugely adverse effect on Ed Genius Smith’s ego. It will now be the size of Saturn, rather than Jupiter.

Surely with the level of coverage now available it should be easy for a team of individuals to assess talent across the county championship and provide detailed reports to the coach and captain for consideration.
