Title: Vertical scratches when knocking in a bat

Hello,

While knocking in my bat I noticed vertical scratches on the face of the bat which has seen a fair bit of knocking. These are small scratches akin to ones on old furniture which has dried out a bit. I wanted to know is this because the willow is dry or are these scratches a byproduct of wood against wood?

Looks dry to me, give it another coat of oil/wax
