Title: Lord Sheraton wood balsam
Post by: andi_thwaites on August 14, 2021, 10:04:33 AM
I have seen a few people on here recommend Lord Sheraton wood balsam to finish bats instead of linseed oil or bat wax. Having been drawn in I have tried it and have to say it does give a brilliant finish and is easy to use.

I am however looking for advice on whether I can apply it to the splice of a bat?

I am sure you are not supposed to put linseed oil on the splice of a bat but in the absence of any stickers could I put the wood balsam there to give the whole bat the nice finish?

If not that is there anything I could use? When I refurb my bats I tend to take all the stickers off to give it a really clean finish but don't really want to leave the splice completely exposed.

Thanks in advance.

Put some masking tape over the splice area when you are polishing the bat and you will be in good shape. You don't oil around the splice so the linceed oil doesn't losen the glue in the handle (I don't know the truth to that, but it was what I was told years ago.)

Given the effect linseed oil has on sticker residue, I imagine there is more than a little truth in that.

As a former joiner I am of the opinion that linseed oil has no effect on PVA glue, otherwise it would not be used as a finish on some furniture.

My understanding was that it used to affect the glue in years past, but not so much now.

Didn’t linseed oil react with animal glue which used to used for the handle gluing?
Correct me if I’m wrong. But now with glues that used are pva/not animal glue, it’s safe to do the splice?

Thanks for the input here, it's really useful. As mentioned I have been using the Lord Sheraton wood balsam rather than straight linseed oil. I will try it on one of my old bats and see if anything happens over time.
