Unfortunately, it will be start of a trend where players will eventually start their careers retired from tests. The only ones playing tests if the format still survives are those who don't have the skills/dont get picked in limited overs.

I also have to wonder how much of the bubble life has had impact on his decision, along with the conflict with CSA administration (reading between the lines and making assumptions here). He has previously raised concerns around bubble life and for a guy who seems to not think about cricket when not on the field and not being able to do non-cricket related activities would be huge. With growing family he is likely to be looking to secure his future with well paying job considering that CSA does not have the resources to match salaries that some of the other boards can make.
