Title: Thicker handle
Post by: cobweb1510 on February 08, 2022, 08:17:49 PM
Hi all,

Just a quickie..... ooeer missus!

My son tried a different bat a few weeks ago, with a significantly thicker handle than his normal bat. He said he liked the way it felt. Whilst it might be possible to get his bat rehandled, that seems a bit of overkill, and I understand you can simply add more grips to the same effect.

So the questions are:
1) Do you simply unroll an additional grip over the old one, or is some preparation/glue etc required?
2) Is there a limit to how many grips you can add like this. I don't know how many it will take to get it how he likes it, but just in case......

Cheers

No need to prepare anything, grips can just go over the top. That will change the feel to a bit more spongy though, may not be quite what he wants.

Another option is to have it double bound or rebound with thicker binding, I've just had the latter done and it feels great in the hands.

Can also use medical strapping tape to build the handle up, very cheap and easy to DIY.

Certainly not cheap, but by George they are good.

Change the binding to a thicker twine, I use a couple of variations when binding the handles based on customers request for handle thickness. Feel free to send me the bat and I’ll happily change the binding for you, just cover postage costs

Thanks to everyone for the replies, especially the very generous rebinding offer.

Because he only has 1 bat (I know that's sacrilege to some on here  :D ) I'll make arrangements locally and hopefully manage a quick turnaround since he's training at least twice a week. Or maybe have a trip over to Warrior and sneak a new pair of wicket keeper gloves for him.

This.

Also means you can alter the shape slightly to make it more round/oval as you prefer.

I use tennis racket tape, slight learning curve in binding it but worth it. can alter shape of handle without adding much weight. Plus good shock absorbant. Cheers

I also use a tennis racket overgrip underneath your grip of choice. Only adds 0.6 of an oz which is really good, buy mine from Amazon - 3pack of Wilson ones for £7 I think.

Just as a close to the thread (no pun intended given the outcome), I ended up using a chap in his garage in Bury (Phoenix bat services) who added a layer of binding thread (and replaced the scuff sheet) for a tenner.

Ollie is really happy with the result.

Does anyone know a place with double thick grips actually in stock? Everywhere I find online doesn't seem to have anything, just wondered if anyone had some smaller stockist that isn't showing up in my searches.

You can have a "thicker" handle buy putting extra grips and/or tapes on it - OR - you can have a thicker handle by having a handle that is naturally thicker with more timber and weight in it.

There is a significant difference between the two.

Adding additional grip mostly does the job for bigger hands to get a better grip, and may do a little to transfer the weight balance .... but if you have a handle that is naturally thicker and heavier due to having more timber in it, then it could have quite a significant effect in the balance and pick up of the bat (almost always in a very, very good way).
