Returning to Surrey.

Smart move, gets him opening with Burns. Assume then Ryan Patel will drop down the order or move clubs as well.

Patel would probably do a decent job anywhere in the top 6, imagine he's on a decent wedge of cash at Surrey too.

Interesting Sibley is making the move but maybe figures it gets him in the picture for England easier.

Amla will be retiring at the end of the season and that means Patel can drop down to 3 when Pope isn't there.
Surrey should be more concerned about losing one of Virdi or Moriarty who haven't played a champo game all year.

They’ll just buy someone else.

To replace two homegrown talents being kept out of the side by another homegrown talent?

(Not strictly true that Moriarty is homegrown, but he didn't come from another county.)

And let's not forget that there were plenty on here who had these two down as more worthy of any England place than Jack Leach.  :o

Given they're both talents, hopefully at least one of them goes and gets a game elsewhere!

That is what Warwickshire do now... Surrey's player conveyor belt from the academy is about to go a bit nuts.

Ben Geddies (Ashtead) and Tom Lawes (Cranleigh) are the latest to get the call up and do well. There are a bunch of others behind them.

I hope Ollie Pope continues to bat at 4 for Surrey. Just to keep people on here confused.

Public schoolboys, the lot of them. :(

In Surrey they invest a lot in state school kids and proactively select state school kids ahead of private school kids where they can.
And then they get picked up on sports scholarships by big private schools.
You could argue there is some social mobility there.

I hope more counties follow suit, too much preferential treatment at the moment.

Which were state school kids who got scholarships?

* If none of them, it's probably a box-ticking exercise.

Virdi and Patel are two examples.
But Lawes, Pope etc were also on sports scholarships.

Stokes' comments following the NZ series were interesting about county players knowing how they needed to play to get a chance in the side.  Sibley's style of putting pressure on himself rather than the bowlers doesn't really fit with that style.  He is also a poor athlete and a terrible fielder.  You do wonder whatever he does in terms of run scoring whether he fits with the current team ethos

I'm sure he could thrash a quick 25 if he put his mind to it.

I think we could see another chance for Sibley. The move back to Surrey may see for scoring options on that good wicket.

Flamingo on drives and reverse sweeps maybe

He's currently 41* off 35 in an opening stand of 44...

Yes, but 'Lees and Lyth' has a nice ring to it.
