A ridiculous scenario occurring where Durham may lose 16 points because a players bat didn’t go through the gauge.
You couldn’t make this up. Not only do Durham get shafted but sending out the message that institutionalised racism is worthy of a lesser points deduction than having too much tape on your bat. Utterly shameful.
Where does the blame lie? With the player? Coach? Sponsor?

Ricky Ponting - whinny baby who whined about bat sizes.
-
Derbyshire lost points in the RL cup after the player had too much tape on the bat so didn’t fit through the gauge.
Responsibility must lie with the player! The rules are there, check your gear. No excuses

Was there tape on the bat? I'm looking at some pictures and I don't see tape on any of the bats he is using? Hard to tell from this one

If there's no tape on it, a pro player could fairly assume that a bat made for him should fit through a gauge as it leaves the factory.
If a couple wraps of tape makes the difference then it's a bit of a grey area. Surely nobody puts more tape on with the intention of making the bat bigger?
-
It would appear that there is no grey area in the rules, as it has to fit through the gauge with or without legal protective coverings. Surely not worth that many points though.
-
It was the Derbyshire lad that had too much tape on his.
Guessing Maidstone was just to big.
-
The gauge is wider to allow for tape/coverings. Was it too wide or was ot the spine height that was the issue? Either way, you'd think a pro would check that kind of thing but then so should his sponsor.
-
Wonder if said player would consider selling his over sized bat :)
-
An illegal/oversized pro bat eh? Isn't that the CBF holy grail? Imagine if it had Maddison in sharpie on the toe! 😆
-
"Derbyshire were docked two points after Mattie McKiernan's bat failed a measurement test in a Royal London Cup game last month."
Another one
-
Matter of time till teams have got a designated gauge controller, CBF getting their collective CV ready 😂
-
Sounds to me like every side in the world needs a new role of “Kit badger”.
Wouldn’t mind checking bats through the gauge, doing minor repairs, knocking in, cleaning up. Sounds like the perfect job.
-
My current bat does not fully fit through the bat gauge.
-
I hate that this rule is a thing. Couldn’t possibly let batters use bigger bats but by all means bring the boundary in 20 yards like they did with The Hundred.

Unless you're playing professional cricket I wouldn't worry yourself about it! 🤣
-
I don't agree with the bat limits but there is no way that a professional player should be caught infringing them. A bat gauge costs less than £5.

Hard to say it's Maddinson's fault! Sponsor's let him down there, shouldn't be providing players with illegal eqiupment.

Be interesting to see what the issue was, would only take a few wraps of bat tape to push a 'full spec' bat over the limits - responsibility lies with both sides really
-
Looks to me on the video it's the spine height that's the issue. Good job they took it off him, can you imagine the carnage which he's have caused due to that 2mm extra! 😆
In fairness, thems the rules. So suppose there has to be a cut off somewhere.

It's entirely his fault as it is his equipment and his responsibility to ensure that it is compliant.
-
It had been claimed that the exact same bat used by Maddinson had been tested the other week in a RL50 game and it went through the gauge fine. Now either whoever made that claim is talking rubbish and it isn’t the same bat or he has plied it with a boatload of tape which wouldn’t really help him much.
For what it’s worth it’s the only real effect on Durhams points that Maddinson will have done. He’s been a pretty poor overseas player so far.

I have 2 white MCC approved plastic guages and one metal guage made to MCC measurements that I can check bats with....they are not as consistant as you may think. I can get my pro bats to pass through the guages differently.
Umpires are all also different, they don't all pass the bat through the same and any form of resistance on the guage (which can be from the guage not being passed over the bat squarely) is met with an attitude of the batsmen being a law breaker rather than trying to fit the bat through.
The guages are also rediculous.....I've had a scoop not pass through.
In summary....the guages are not consistent, and neither are the umpires.
