Title: International cricketers
Post by: MichaelM on October 23, 2022, 01:42:45 PM
Is this only the pressure situations that make captains and players make mistakes/miscalculate? Or are they not up to the level?
It's my first post, please guide me if I any mistake.

Pressure of the situation if you’re referring to the India v Pakistan game?

He’ll have bowled thousands of deliveries but having seen his team mate get dispatched the mental aspect takes over and he’s then thinking of that rather than pitching the ball.

We were lucky enough to have a mental strength talk pre-season at my club with a current Pro sitting in on it to answer our questions very honestly. Cricket is a game that doesn’t flow as quickly as most sports so the time is there to end up over thinking situations which can often lead down a negative route.

No, I'm talking in general.
I'm trying to understand what part does mental aspect play in selecting international cricket or at club level.
I hope this makes sense.

I’m pretty sure every international player will have the technique required to play the format they are chosen for. It then comes down to how they handle the situation.

For me, a great example is Liam Livingstone, he clearly had the required technique and skill level when he first came into the T20 side, but seemed to really struggle against South Africa. He spent some time away and has now come back into the set up and is doing well, no real chance in his technique.

I may have misinterpreted your question

However if you are asking in some way whether mental side plays a big part in international performance or club cricket

I believe it is the main reason you see certain players performing and even more so at club level

I have seen tons of talented club players but cannot Perform to the level they are selected and sometimes remain in side because of friendships etc..

The question may be differnt though.. which I appreciate

Not just cricket but sports performance in general is largely governed by mental state, the higher up the tree you go the more it matters. Pressure situations at any level will result in mistakes but  the amount of pressure increases exponentially when you are representing your country, against your greatest rivals in a flagship tournament, in front of tens of thousands of screaming fans and being live streamed all over the planet.

I think the argument that a player is not up to the level because they make a mistake in the highest pressure situation is not a good one as it is a unique moment in time and there is therefore no certainty how any other player would have performed in the exact same situation.

Just my tuppence...
