Title: Your 2023 kit - pictures are a must...
Post by: 19reading87 on January 12, 2023, 01:59:59 PM
It is that time of year again where people are dusting off their kit for preseason.

Let's see those pictures.

Match kit, net kit, wet weather kit, we don't care!

I appreciate there have been issues with photobucket. So instead use

https://postimages.org/ (https://postimages.org/)
or
http://tinypic.com (http://tinypic.com) both work well and are free.

Didn't take any pictures but I've just organised my Saturday kit. Midweek kit and training kit bag. Need a couple more pairs of socks from Tom at ayrtek and trying to find a decent batting short. I'll take pics this weekend

Very little change to mine for this year...
There is a new thigh pad in there and an upgraded lid, plus some new gloves... But the kit had virtually no action last summer as I pinged my Achilles and didn't play.

Still setting the example with some kit pictures.

It is a remfry with a blue back ordered directly from the guys in Aus. The inner is a standard gn test, which are much less bulky and not materially less protective.

There is the matching inner thigh pad somewhere in my house but I believe my son has pinched it... His kit is the business. I will get some pics of it at some point.

Out of curiosity, what keeping pads are you using? I've got a set of kookaburra (because of the deep footwell) just wondering what everybody else uses/likes

So, after a rather long hiatus from the forum (after being attacked by the keyboard warriors of the internet). I thought it was about time to return… No, not with a sob story but one of kit of course (it’s why we are all here, isn’t it?).

Since being on here last, maybe around 2018/19, I became one of those hobbyist bat makers and kicked on to all other things that come with it (softs, luggage and all). Because of that, I now rock my own kit and hasn't changed much over the past few seasons but will be updated in March when my new stuff arrives.

SOFTS
- First edition Morton & Carson batting pads with the traditional style canes, all white. Comfy ish but a bit on the heavy side, leather instep and towelled straps etc. all the bells and whistles you expect I suppose. Going into 4th season this year so have stood up to many tantrums after not scoring any runs.

- 2023 Yellow T20 batting pads with the rounded front vertical bolsters, obviously cack-handed. By far, a lot more comfortable than the predecessors and lighter but after being wrapped on the pads a few times over in Cambs Cricket Barn this winter there’s no loss in the level of protection for the change. New white pads will be the same as these but with minor aesthetic tweaks.

- First edition M&C gloves, standard kind of design with 4 splits on each finger and pittard palms, again will be updated in April :)

- 2023 Morton Keeping pads and gloves, pretty much runs the same sort of aesthetic as the yellow pads, comfy and do a job as I caught a ball with them on. Suppose that helps?

OTHER BITS

- Masuri Titanium lid (2016) won in their comp when England played New Zealand. Still going strong but will probably change to a Shrey Air Ti in the coming months.

- Spiked up puma trainers, bought as a sample from over in Asia they just seem to do the job. Comfy and stable but they do get quite warm though as it’s fully leather/pleather on the upper. Might look to get some more though.

- My trusty @StrettonFox Sports thigh pads which have also kept me going for a good number of years now! Can’t rave about them enough. It’s been about 6/7 years since I got them and I’ve not needed any repairs, spare straps or anything. Rock solid!

THE BATS
3 x MKI bats that I’ve played about with on the shapes, ranging from the “big cheaty stick” (one with the yellow grip) to a lower profile stick same kind of deal with weights as well.

From left to right:
- (2lb 9oz) “players shape” with shorter blade/longer handle setup. 38mm edges, 64mm spine and about 4mm of concaving. Oval bottom hand, rounder top. Entering season 3 of use.

- (2lb 11oz) low profile blade again with a shorter blade/longer handle going on. mid-low middle, 37mm edges, 57mm spine and absolutely 0 concaving, traditional English style handle being a thick oval tapering all the way up. Heading into season 4 of use and still holding on.

- (2lb 13oz) dubbed “the big cheaty stick” it’s got 44mm edges, 68mm spine, 32mm toe and 24mm shoulders. It again has next to no concaving. Counterbalanced with a couple of grips and 4 cutoffs on the knob at the top. Semi-oval handle.

Anyway, enjoy the snaps. Might do more pictures of the bats next week.

That left hand stick is exactly the kind of thing I'd make for myself if I was a batmaker, lovely bit of willow. Nice to see another batmaker posting on the forum again!

I use Hunts County Players pads (and the matching gloves). I will put photos up of them when I get round to doing my 2023 kit photos.

Softs and batting kit is much the same as last year. Bought a couple of new bags (H4L duffle for midweek/Sunday games, Red Ink large duffle for league games) but the big change is bats. I may or may not have sold off just about every bat I owned and got a bit spendy...

(https://i.postimg.cc/2SNFX6Fd/20230123-120123.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/gn4ZxG7r)

Left to right:

- One from Chad's workshop stickered as a Pryzm Volca.
- Scott Butterfly JS175, SBLH.
- Garrard, allegedly sub-grade but I find that difficult to believe when looking at it.
- Chase FLC from the CBF sales section.
- Oxfordshire, rehandled and restickered by Mr Scott.
- Phantom Apache, looks and feels TK made, Blitz-y shape, eBay bargain.

Not all that I bought over this winter but looks like these will be the ones in the game bags, now to learn how to hit the ball off the square with them...

Bats:
GN Predator 500 - always wanted one when younger so a no brainer to get one with the re-release
Ayrtek G2 - Awesome bat. Purchased from Whack sports and scoring a few runs with it so the predator might not get a look in for a while.
Blank Tazz - Refurb I did for someone at my club but he didn’t want it anymore so it’s my spare/wet weather bat. Very good middle

Gloves:
Kookaburra Rogue Players x 2
Kookaburra Verve Players x 3
Cicada Sports Gloves
Impala v900

Pads:
Kookaburra 1877 Players
GM Original LE (recent purchase and an eBay bargain)
Remfry Outer (new purchase)
Remfry Inner custom (not pictured as hasn’t arrived)

Helmet:
Masuri Vision Series Steel

Armguards
Remfry wrist guard. Just need to contact Luke and he makes them for you. Very cheap as there is no leather, towelling or straps
Ayrtek Hybrid
Stretton Fox (never use this but keep in bag just in case.

Keeping:
Ton Players Pads
Spartan MSD7 gloves

Bag/Case
GN Ultra Duffle
Duck and Run Coffin - probably my favour piece of kit and very rare to see one over here in Australia.

Other
New Balance ck10v4
Aero Box
Shock Doctor Box
Shock Doctor titan alloy box (not pictured as hasn’t arrived )
Oakley Sutro
Rapid Arm thrower (this thing is awesome!)

My kit for the season:

Pads: model from a couple of years back. Top end pads with great protection and comfort.

Gloves, 3x pairs of this years, nice and light and great protection. Pittards palms too.

Bats:

2x G1s and 1x G2. All three are huge and absolutely fly. Semi oval handles, fill the guage and weigh only 2.9

Indoor nets start on Friday so the kit has come out.... a bit of change for this season -

Bats -
Choice Custom - my trusty Choice is now 6 years old and has been given a wonderful refurb (including new handle) by Jonny.
Keeley Worx - bought at the start of last season as my new match bat but TBH hasn't yet taken over from my Choice.

Pads -
SS All White Pro - New for this season, hopefully should be good and fit well as they are Small Mens.

Gloves -
SS Limited Edition All White - These are brand new and feel amazing so can't wait to try them out.
Willow & Wand - Great gloves from Soulman very soft with good protection.

WK -
Gloves and Pads are Hunts County Players - the pads turned up unbranded which I wasn't to fussed about. I have new replacement gloves coming in a months time. I have used Hunts keeping gear for almost 30 years and still can't fault it for value and quality!

Helmet - Masuri Vision series Ti.

Bag - Club bag made by Base Cricket.

Not in the photo are Reebok Spiked trainers and some old P2's (which need replacing TBH).

Two bags
1) New Balance FKW
2) WCW with unbranded softs
Somewhere else is my coffin with Quantock Cricket bats, unbranded softs & my cricket shoes (I hope)
Two C&D Albion helmets just 20 years between them
Netting with the WCWs, so far so good.

I’ll see what I can do… only do one profile really, nice and full, very little concaving and just different blade lengths.

(https://i.postimg.cc/qMkyk6Mz/F971-D785-E149-4689-9373-AF5-A1-C4847-E5.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/py6pCTjH)

Bats:
GN Predator 500 - always wanted one when younger so a no brainer to get one with the re-release
Ayrtek G2 - Awesome bat. Purchased from Whack sports and scoring a few runs with it so the predator might not get a look in for a while.
Blank Tazz - Refurb I did for someone at my club but he didn’t want it anymore so it’s my spare/wet weather bat. Very good middle

Gloves:
Kookaburra Rogue Players x 2
Kookaburra Verve Players x 3
Cicada Sports Gloves
Impala v900

Pads:
Kookaburra 1877 Players
GM Original LE (recent purchase and an eBay bargain)
Remfry Outer (new purchase)
Remfry Inner custom (not pictured as hasn’t arrived)

Helmet:
Masuri Vision Series Steel

Armguards
Remfry wrist guard. Just need to contact Luke and he makes them for you. Very cheap as there is no leather, towelling or straps
Ayrtek Hybrid
Stretton Fox (never use this but keep in bag just in case.

Keeping:
Ton Players Pads
Spartan MSD7 gloves

Bag/Case
GN Ultra Duffle
Duck and Run Coffin - probably my favour piece of kit and very rare to see one over here in Australia.

Other
New Balance ck10v4
Aero Box
Shock Doctor Box
Shock Doctor titan alloy box (not pictured as hasn’t arrived )
Oakley Sutro
Rapid Arm thrower (this thing is awesome!)

My gear has changed already. My duffle broke and I manged to get a GN Legend Stand up wheelie off of market place for a good deal. That bag also had an issue but as it was still under warranty I received a replacement GN Legend Gold bag for the same price as the duffle effectively. I'll chuck a review and some photos up as I have literally seen zero reviews for the bag anywhere.

My NB CK10 shoes tore at the sole plate so I got replacement Asics Gel Gully 7's. They are much comfier tbh.

Bats

Over the winter, I had various ideas about what kit I was planning to use, but after trying some of the new 2023 GM kit and some DSC bats, I have settled with the cricket bat that started my love of our fantastic sport back in 2004, the iconic, Kookaburra Kahuna. I purchased a 4.1 2023 Kahuna at the start the year to see what the new models look like nowadays, both from a profile and a graphics perspective and that certain wet the appetite.

I then started scrolling through Facebook Marketplace / eBay with the view of picking up a used one or two for nets, giving me time to knock in a new bat, however, I have managed to pick up 3 used Kahuna's that I am absolutely chuffed with.

From left to right:

2022 Kahuna 6.2 - Brought off eBay last week for just £45, it was a bit of a shot in the dark with no images of the actual bat and if I am being honest, absolutely no idea on what I was going to receive. I had a fear after hitting the purchase button that this was one of the painted back models, but I could not have been more wrong. 37mm edges, virtually no concaving and taps up beautifully. I gave it a little sand this lunchtime and have applied a scuff and a second grip and I am over the moon. Weighs 2lb 8.7oz in its current form. I am not suggesting this is a misgrade but I am struggling to see why it was a grade 6 model. 5/6 blemish free grains and no staining visible. Regardless, over the moon at what turned and this will likely become bat 1 for the season[/li]
2021 Kahuna 4.0- Another eBay purchase, this one for £60. The stickers weren't in the best condition upon arrival, so I gave the bat a complete refurbishment and sent it back to Kookaburra for a new set of labels, a new grip and a scuff sheet. This one is very similar to the 6.2 above - 2lb 9.7oz in its current form with 2 grips applied, very little concaving and feels lovely on the rare occasion I do find the middle![/li]
2017 Kahuna 750 - Yet another eBay purchase, this time for £75. The bat didn't appear to be in a great state when it arrived, however, an hour in the workshop with the sander and it was looking a lot better. This bat also went back to Kookaburra with the 4.0 for a fresh set of labels and a new grip. I doubt this one will get much use this season, purely because the two bats above are absolute belters! Weighs 2lb 11.3oz with 2 grips applied[/li]
Soft Goods

No surprise that with 3 Kahuna's in the bag, it was going to Kahuna soft goods that I opted for.

Over the winter, I have made a fair number of purchases from Cricket-Hockey who are located just outside of Salisbury. For the soft goods, I opted to use those guys again and had a fantastic experience. I don't play a particular high standard of cricket, so I decided to go for the 4.1 soft goods from Kookaburra.

The pads are nice and lightweight and have some elegant, subtle detailing which is the mirrored in the batting gloves. I have had a few hits to the pads in the nets over the last few weeks and they have a decent level of protection for the price point.

The batting gloves are very impressive. I am a little picky when it comes to batting gloves, but for £35 a pair, these are lovely and flexible, the palms are super soft and they look great in conjunction with the bats and the pads. I have picked up 2 sets to get me through the season, but for the price, you cannot go far wrong.

And for midweek cricket in 2023, my club are opting for full coloured kits. To ensure I have FKW status, I have taken the plunge and picked up a matching set of Kookaburra 4.1 black pads & gloves:

The only items missing is a Kookaburra bag which I will pick up over the weekend and the old cricket spikes, which I fear will be staying in the garage for a few more weeks yet...

Enjoy the pictures!

That 6.2 looks a bargain.

I nearly bought one from SD recently but chickened out as was worried what G6 willow would look like, but based on this I should have taken the risk  :(

Lovely Kook kit. I thought about going full Kook kit this year but read the softs had got a bit bulky in an effort to meet new regs. How do they feel on?

That £45er could be bat of the year, looks large from side on.

Also please dont use a duck pun on a cricket bat forum, very poor form  :D

Wasn't planning on any new gear at all. Had most of my kit since 2015 and generally fine with it, although noticing the other day some of the stiching on my gloves is falling apart so on the lookout today. Shame the New Balance 560s don't appear to be around anymore, as I've found them to be generally comfortable. Possibly some new spikes too; digging them out the other day and they're slightly tatty. Tempted to go with what I new at New Balance again, but from wearing some Payntr indoor/general shoes over the winter a cricket shoe is kind of tempting...

Also does anyone have some suggestions for compression shorts/trunks? I've worn Aero briefs for awhile and despite buying a size up always seem to run into chafing issues

Back to some kit chat....

Mine is the same as last year, only change being the thigh pad as using my new ones this season and a bat I made up which I just couldn't resist. Someone nabbed my spare, so I'll have it as a back up and play it in steadily for when the green stickered one goes or becomes the back up. Although it's had two seasons use and is going fine still with no really damage, so no real need for another tbh.....but this is CBF after all!

I'll maybe get some new boots too and possibly give me everything a clean!

That's the one mate. Couldn't resist it! 🙄 Appreciate the feedback. Was gonna get a fresh pair of pads and glovrs but these are fine after last seasonal matches and practice, so seems wasteful.

That is correct (with Kit Locker); I carried out a lot of research in the off season with choosing a new kit supplier and they were chosen. I ordered my kit in November and a number of players (seniors, juniors and colts) have already ordered and received their kit.

I have had to purchase another bag for the season (Shrey Duffle Elite) as the SG bag (which I will use to transport my refurbished bats and bat maintenance equipment) I purchase was far too small for all the essential; got some personal touches added to it; there are 6 bat compartments (who needs 6 bats, I have my SG (Keeley) bat and technique bat, I will also put my fielding bat and my daughter's bat in there); I can fit one pair of my spiked trainers (in a boot bag) underneath the helmet slot.

A few additions to the kit bag.

Still have to get to the nets to see which ones I'll be using. Left to right.

B3 Beluga - Been using this for a while. Ideal to warm up in the nets with and goes well in the middle too.
Mongoose Torque - Bought cheap, was delaminated but has been repaired and seems to go well while tapping up.
GM Icon - Again cheap, shoulder damage repaired. Taps up well.
Unstickered Keeley Superior - Picked up from them at the end of last season. Asked for the best performing ugly bat and they dug around and came up with this. Best ping of the lot.
GN Powerbow Atomic - Cheap fleabay, had edge damage, now repaired, still needs playing in.
Affinity Toro - Very nearly 2,16 but picks up very well. For 'ships' and giggles.

With me living in Holland and our team colours being blue I couldn't resist these end of season bargain Puma's. With me having Puma's before I ordered the mids in the same size but they are very tight so I ordered the other ones in a size bigger. Thin socks for the mids and horizon socks for the other.

Keeley works and superior gloves. Not much difference between them. Nothing visual or on feel that you'd say one was more expensive than the other.

Keeley pro duffle. I believe last year I picked up the last one.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52795332315_533239fe2c_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2orfYtF)

B3 three stripe I picked up from here. I owe a bat to a teammate so he has the choice of this or the Aldred. Nothing wrong with either, they're just what he picked out.

Three bats I picked up for the team kit bag. Still in the UK so I haven't seen them in person yet. The Red Back might just end up in my bag. (https://flic.kr/p/2orfXma)

Kit for this season sees no changes from last year tbh.
Bats are both G3 with the yellow grip one being the first bat I ever made, luckily it was a bit of a lump as it’s been refined over the years and gone from 2.12 to 2.9 in that time. Now going into its 5th season and has over 2500 runs to her name.
The other I made at the start of last year as the original has had quite a few repairs but it’s still hanging in there but is ready to step in now having been a net bat since it’s creation. Both bats are 1/2 inch shorter blade, longer handle set up

Pads are the initial sample set from when I first got softs made so this will be their 3rd season.
Gloves are the sausage style and will need replacing at some point this season, however the WRX pittards wears a lot better than the English pittards iv used in many other gloves.
Wicket keeping kit just in case but I hardly keep these days
Duffle is the original sample bag again - new for 2023 model is a wheelie duffle but other then that same design

Extras are aero P2’s, masuri club TI lid and somewhere are my old SL22 spikes which really do need replacing but are so comfortable.

A mix of new and old this year!

Bats - 2 Keeley’s , a Superior with WORX stickers, and a WORX with Superior ones. Just what I fancied at the time I picked up the bats from the Keeley factory.
       - The GN is the one I got from the GN off cut lottery!

Softs - I’m really pleased with the DKP Pro softs. Really comfy and a decent price.

Bag - SS is our kit provider, so got a club crest put on one of their Pro Elite Duffles in the sale. It’s a really nice bag - plenty of space in the separate bat cave, as opposed to my old GN Prestige.

Helmet - my trusty old Frankenhelmet! It’s a GM with a Slazenger grill that I adjusted/re drilled so I can see properly. I’ll be gutted when it finally dies.

Protection - P2 strippers and an Ayrtek D30 arm guard. Love them both.

Match bats for 2023 although in reality there is one too many as the Legend was an unplanned addition but an opportunity that couldn't be refused (more on that later). So may move on the Maax.

Gray-Nicolls Ultimate Original Pro Performance 2lb 11oz , oiled and knocked in

Gray-Nicolls Legend 2lb 9oz

Gray-Nicolls Blue Maax 2lb 12oz, oiled

Some lovely kit posted above!

I have a few things to share once the rain has stopped! I have the best kit I've ever had this season, and I've been slowly training myself up to eventually join a club. I'm probably the only/one of very, very few trans cricketers in the USA, and finding an accepting club where I am going to feel safe and accepted in a scary moment is pretty challenging.

Anyway, I hope to find a club soon.

howdy y'all! Still no club but I've been hitting some balls around.

I know I'm taking the worst pics ever for the forum, I'm sorry!

Here are our three bats - the Salamander from when Willostix were cool, a Kookaburra Bubble Pro 1.0, and a H4L Pro in the Players Profile (and the super cool pink stickers). These are my weapons for hitting my way out of depression.  :)

The Bubble was sourced from the US on special offer, and it is absolutely outstanding. It has a big profile and a really powerful middle, and I think it looks great too. I'll put an antiscuff on it soon because I love it so much. It feels pretty light - I think it was supposed to be 2 8 or 2 9, but I've never weighed it. Really good pick up.

The H4L is a new addition to the family, and it is so interesting. The players profile is great, and really forgiving. It is well suited for my technique, which is pretty classical. I've no idea what it weighs, but it has a light pick-up and it has plenty of power so I don't care. It is the pingiest bat I've ever had and I don't regret it at all. I'm still playing it in a bit too.

I also have a load of H4L stuff - pro elite pads, gloves, the wheelie duffle, bat cover, hat, and then all kinds of @Ayrtek Cricket stash too - hybrid sweatband, hat, socks and so on. I assume you don't want to see pics of all that?
I'm really excited to find a club... I'll probably just start training over the winter nets at this point. I just want to see if I'm actually any good against real players because right now I feel like prime Ian Bell, and that can't be right.

I want to thank @Ayrtek Cricket / @The Cricket Boutique for sorting all this out at a very agreeable price! He even very kindly put some prawn cocktail crisps in there, saving me from the tyranny of American snacks (but not for long, because they lasted 10 minutes). Thank you, mate!

It should all keep me going for a long time.
