Title: Sportsspikes spiked Asics tennis shoes
Post by: Buzz on April 25, 2023, 09:33:48 AM
Hi, as you will have seen I got a pair of these Asics spiked up. The trainers were on special so it seemed like a good option for an old man with knackered Achilles tendons!

I have also shown pics of my old Nikes from about 12 years ago which Brian and Brenda did for me.

You can see that b and b use a thinner material and grind the soles of the trainers a bit more before stitching and gluing the base.

I don't know exactly what Kelvin does, but he certainly uses a thicker base. I think he has done a good job. At £55 including return postage he is more expensive than b and b but he is used by a few guys who sell pre prepared spikes.

The key is finding the right trainers which isn't that easy these days. These are Asics GEL dedicate tennis shoes

What would you say constitutes the "right trainers" to have this process done with?

Kelvin done these for me and I used them Saturday whilst batting (only faced 3 balls) and keeping wicket (for 31.3 overs); they made a slight squeaking noise but they did the job apart from getting dirty.

I have previously used Cheshire Shoe Repairs who did these.

I got these done for a club mate by Spiked By Mike.

For me it would be something that has the right support to play cricket in.
So some of the light weight nit style running shoes wouldn't be ideal, nor would some of the carbon sole running shoes you can get.

These are tennis shoes, so are designed for similar movements as cricket.

My Nikes worked well for fielding and batting but would not be ideal if I was bowling...

I see you use the Currex insoles too, which I love.

Yes, expensive but I think the best around.

What turn around did you get? Hoping they are good like above

The Boy has claimed them. Urgh. I should have ordered two pairs.

Separately sports direct have some Adidas supernova for £30 down from £100 (OK, so let's say 80) which will make some good spikes...

Have been doing a shoe try on session today. Even my 12 year old Nikes are more comfortable that my cricket shoes.

Hummm.

So Asics Tennis shoes are better than their cricket shoes? Or better for players will ailments and injuries like Buzz's Achilles issue?

Seems ridiculous with all their Research and development that their tennis shoes are better than their actual cricket shoes which you would think have had many hours of development put into them.

They look cool though and are different.

To the issue is that in a lot of batting spikes the "drop" is small and the shoe is quite flat, 8 to 10 mm, compared to a trainer which can have up to 16mm. That puts additional pressure on the Achilles, which is why I am looking at something different. To be fair that isn't the case with the new balance shoes, but they are very expensive.

Tennis shoes are designed for similar movements to cricket shoes hence why I went with them.

Right my dear son has half inched the asics in the most unsurprising turn of events. Plus he bowls more than me so I had to do something else.

Then sports direct were selling supernova+ for £30 so I thought I would have some of that.

Kelvin has done a better job with these than the asics in my view.

In terms of costs...

£35 for the trainers including postage to sportsspikes then £55 for the spiking and return postage.

So £90 for a pair of Adidas boost spiked trainers which look OK.

I will let you decide.
The currex insoles will be in there too, reused from my Nikes

I use these trainers for my running. I've been pleasantly surprised by their comfort and are only starting to show some wear after well over 100km, and that's only a bit on the sole. The adidas boost/bounce has really improved over the last few years in my opinion.

Has anybody tried a DIY spiking job? I could be tempted to give it a go....

I'd be very keen to know how they do it and try it out. What sort of glue would they use?

Do they take the original sole off and put the new spiked one on?

Cheers.

Is it okay to use tennis shoes or baseball shoes (rubber, not spiked) for cricket?
They aren't going to injure me, right?

Unless you're bowling serious pace and need the support for your feet and ankle, you'll be absolutely fine. Only thing with tennis shoes might be whether you get enough grip on a grass outfield.

Morning folks, what do I search for, when looking for Kelvin? I was chatting with him about some spikes, but for some reason I can't find the thread!

Thanks.
