Title: Eng vs Ireland, Lords
Post by: Buzz on May 31, 2023, 07:46:52 AM
Lords test match week coming up and England are playing Ireland.

It is a great opportunity for the Ireland team to get some test match game time against this England team.

I still see it as a bit of a callow team, but the results say it isn't at all.

There is one big surprise with no Lords specialist, Chris Woakes.

Eng Team...

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Rooooooooooot
Brooks
Stokes
Foakes Bairstow
Nighthawk
Potts
Tongue (no idea, apparently he is brisk and impressed in he nets)
Leach

Ireland are resting Josh Little (which is a massive shame)

That'll be the last time Woakes bothers skipping the IPL then!

Shame the batting doesn't match

19-4 depending on review! Definitely 19-3

Absolute chaos! Nipped through to the kitchen for a cuppa and it's all happening.

Tongue looks like he has a bit of extra nip. 85-88mph

Solid day for England. Bowled well. Tongue looked good.
Broad leads the attack well.

Duckett looked class. Crawley did Crawley things.

Batting day tomorrow. Should be a fun watch.

Quality day live in the big smoke.

Good - Duckett puts bowlers under pressure and played well
Broad a class apart very consistent and earned his wickets
Tongue pace very spring into zippy action got the ball through

Bad-    Tongue whilst quick lacks any control but is worth monitoring
Potts didn’t use the conditions well enough bowled without consistency

Overall great day out at Lords thanks to @alba caerulea for sorting we started in the Edrich Lower but ended up with a brilliant view in the top tier of the grandstand.

I think Tongue was operating on instructions to bowl short rather than hit good lengths.

I think Tongue was operating on instructions to bowl short rather than hit good lengths.

Without a doubt he was bowling short in spells as the slips disappeared and we had that almost behind the keeper very fine third man and the slips disappeared but when the slips were in I didn’t see enough accuracy for him to trouble a proper test batsman but he has the raw tools to make it without a doubt.

He was without a doubt bowling to instruction but did threaten apart from the odd hit on the head to ( was it tucker).
I was being harsh as it his first test at the home of cricket I guess but when the slips were in I didn’t see him really trouble the batsman.

How long do we think england bat today. 5o over burst and try and be done inside the day. Or would the batters prefer middle time to nets pre ashes?

Bat, bat and bat some more I'd say, as test time in the middle will be useful. How many times do we say England are undercooked in the first test of a series.

On Tongue, I think he will do better at the nursery end, he mughy get a go at that in the second dig. Stokes will definitely be keen for him to get a wicket.

On the batting, there is a big crowed expected on Sat, I would have thought someone would have a word with the Eng management and say this is an entertainment business, please keep going...

I also think a lead of 250 will be more than enough... I would like to see Eng bat all day, but they are more likely to bat until tea.

Said the same yesterday. I'm really not a fan of how bright white England's test kit is, and hate the style of jumper. Not related to this test match, but the colour and design of the New Zealand test kit is my ideal.

I agree in terms of keeping it going for the entertainment. Not a great start to the summer if we get it done early and loads of people miss out on a full day of cricket on the weekend. So, just bat all day.
I have to say, I'm not sure it's great preparation for the team ahead of The Ashes given the step up in quality/atmosphere/pressure. So the only real benefit is time in the middle, so use it.

Surely they rack up a big total to give Root, Brook and Stokes some time in the middle against a red ball?

Genuinely think they wont need to bat at this point, looks like they're going for the win today at this rate

I'd agree, but not sure it really feels the Bazball way.

When was the last time Root batted in a proper match?
