Title: Fetch
Post by: thedon on June 01, 2023, 08:11:33 PM
Batsman was smacking our bowlers everywhere and each time he hit a 6 would shout out "fetch". Bowler who eventually got him out gave him abit of a send off and an all mighty fight nearly ensued.

What does everybody interpret "fetch" as meaning and do you think it's disrespectful?

Yes. I’d certainly be chiming in when he was out with some choice words if he’s giving it the big one each time he managed to hit a 6!

Yeah, that’s douche bag behaviour

Think you'd have to expect a bit of chirp back if you've been telling the bowler to 'fetch it' every time you've hit them for 6. Have to be able to take it if you're giving it the biggun.

That said, nothing abusive in 'fetch it', so not sure why anyone is getting fighty unless the bowler said something abusive.

Don't really have to be abusive to turn the mood of a game bad.

True, but if you're wanting a fight because someone was chirping a bit then maybe competitive sport is not for you.

Not abusive, but definitely disrespectful. I can't comprehend what would make a batsman do that and deserved whatever send off he got. Agree that if he gives it out, he has to be able to take it.
Hopefully there weren't many kids watching or playing, since it's a really poor example to set. Especially if any of the bowlers were still juniors.

Pretty rubbish behavior from the batter. Does the bowler shout 'Beaten' every time the batter plays and misses or 'Scunge' every time the ball hits the inside/outside edge? Just a very arrogant thing to do. I'm a bit jealous because I can't hit the ball that far or for six so I would just shout 'placed for two'. I would have had a polite word with the bloke or his skipper and if he chose to ignore me or tell me where to go I wouldn't bother shaking his hand at the end of the game.

You can't get too worked up by these idiots, but it does set a poor tone for the match as a whole.

unfortunately i can admit to having done something similar, though not proud of it. it was 'if there is a defence' on the back of a ton of verbal from bowler and fielders while trying to keep us in a game, there was not scrap just a reminder that if i was as bad as he said i was that he should go fetch the ball from the gardens and get me out with it - though the language may not have been quite so pleasant. few words each way exchanged and a few overs later we both shook hands and apologized, not going to be best mates but we were both in the wrong.

note: im slow, fat, and not very good so i would have gotten out eventually - all they did was make me try harder

not saying i was in the right, and im certain that the subject of the topic should expect a bit - assuming he was unprovoked of course

are we saying that sledging is only acceptable if its the fielding side though? im not saying abuse, but a gentle chirp doesnt harm anyone and if it puts the bowler of his length and distracts the fielders why not? its no different to whats coming back.

That's not really competitive though is it, that's just being a (No Swearing Please).

Someone being a bit of a knob shouldn't be enough to be starting a scrap though. Don't disagree with you that the nonsense chirp is unnecessary and adds nothing to the game.

No, but it's usually that it starts with when a game ends up bad tempered, and any threat of a scrap usually comes in those sort of games.

Pathetic from the batsman and deserved a big send off

We all play for fun and have work on Mondays afterwards

No time for people like that, then again, if the fielding team have overstepped to start a scrap then same goes for them!

If he's reacted to the bowler and a few fielders having a chirp when he got out then it's on him

Guess all depends on what's went down etc. I do think speaking to someone as if they were a dog after each 6 is disrespectful and distasteful myself. Once as a snide remark I'd let slide I would imagine, maybe a 'back to the kennel' sledge following his dismissal would have been said.

On the topic of sledging, I think one of my favourite sledges other than the 'tickets please' story was probably the one involving Viv and Greg Thomas:

"It’s red, round and weighs about five ounces, in case you were wondering."
Of course, the next ball was launched out of the ground by the West Indian legend accompanied with the following words:
"Greg, you know what it looks like. Now go and find it."

Batsman wasn't provoked by the bowler or the field. After the send off it was the batsman wanting a fight and we the fielders all had to intervene. The batsman was some sort of overseas, playing a few levels below what he should be. The opposing captain came on the field to join the fun and games stating not to "p*ss" the batsman off as he will bowl very fast at you and you don't want that lol

Even more reason why He should be setting the example then if bought over as an overseas player.

Ours is here to coach and is looked upto by the junior players having played in the PSL

The reason I stopped playing for a number of years. Turned up to get the opposition gobbing off, pay money and repeat.

Playing village cricket now and it's just a real pleasure for 22 people to spend an afternoon doing something they all love. No agro, no swearing, etc, etc. Just how amateur cricket should be played.

Sounds like he'd be bowling as fast as he could whatever.

Whilst I’ve never, and don’t intend to ever shout something like fetch to a bowler, I did once mimic the bowlers tennis player-esque grunt/uhhhh as I hit him back over his head first ball for 6. I get the effort ball and maybe something slipping out the voice box but this guy almost paused it until the delivery was about to be played!

He stopped and we laughed about it after
