Has a stress fracture of the back and is out of the Ashes.
:( :(
-
Oh dear no. This is really becoming the season of injuries.
Gutted for him.
-
Big loss for us as he is clearly our number 1. Maybe Jacks to come in not sure if his bowling is good enough thou.
Hope Leach is fit for the winter, to overcome the illness and conditions he has had throughout his career is remarkable in itself.
He has also flourished after the change of captaincy
A real shame
-
I like Dawson as the replacement but I can't see the current management doing that. Suspect it will be Rehan, Livi or Jacks.
-
So disappointing, gutted for him.
-
Gutting for him, heard a state that under Stokes and McCullum he has bowled 1000 more deliveries than the next bowler so really have confidence in him which under Root you always felt he didn’t rate or trust him and he has been decent for the last 12 months. Big hole to fill now for England especially if pitches will be like Lords this week that was really flat and only Wood as a genuine quick
-
gutted for leach, worse still is that i dont see an option who is 100% ready for an ashes series. Root is part time, rehan is very raw and may be too early in his career, livi and jacks i dont think are up to that level as bowlers.
best option we have is Mo Ali again, but i think hes lost interest in playing for england
-
The only sensible option is to bring Moeen back for the series. Anything else is silly
-
What if Sophie Eccleston is the next best spinner in the country who can also bat... 😯😯😯
-
I’d pick Sam Curran.
-
BBC reporting Mo considering unretiring himself so they must have asked him.
-
Taken from Twitter:
Moeen Ali is seriously considering an approach from the England management to return to the Test squad for the Ashes campaign, he has confirmed to The Cricketer.
-
I am about 5050 on this. I suspect. Moeen might well say no. He doesn't have the number overs under the belt to do this.
The old school approach would be to pick Liam Dawson.
We may see a Sam Curran type approach, can bat and offers a point of difference with his left arm angle. But he also hasn't played any red ball cricket for ages, so doesn't have the right number of overs under the belt.
Who knows.
-
The problem is not just the spinner, Stokes clearly is not fit so we need 4 seamers plus a spinner or not play a spinner at all.
I cannot see stokes doing the 4th role.
I absolutely disagree with Foakes being dropped but we can now see how big an issue our front line spinner being injured it.
If Mo says yes that may be the best option due to his ability to bat just as much as a bowling role.
-
Leach and Crawley are the two players backed by Stokes who have turned out very modest records under his captaincy. A front line spinner averaging 38 under the current captain who bats 11 and is an weak fielder wouldn't on be a huge loss. But it reflects how bare the cupboard currently is.
Moeen coming back for one series would be the best option at this point
-
This is terrible news. Depends a lot on whether Stokes bowls I think. A rogue option like Rehan might be fine if Stokes is bowling, Dawson probably the best bet if not.
Moeen sounds like a backward step, he's not going to be able to do the same job as Leach when it comes to number of overs and his batting dropped off badly a while ago now.

Leach is the leading wicket taker and most used bowler under Stokes, I'd maybe reassess how modest that record is. 3rd highest test wicket taker in the world for 2022.
-
You sort if wonder if this will force Stokes' hand to move Himself to open and play Jacks and Curran, similar to how they had Pope keep in Pakistan, however they won't drop YJB.
-
Given the noises being made i think Mo is plan A, I'd guess B maybe involves 4 seamers and Root.

Surely you can’t go into the Ashes with an opener who hasn’t opened before??
-
sam curran is a great shout if root can bowl the spinners overs, i just doubt his ability to keep it tight enough to build pressure. hes got a golden arm, and i suppose he turns it more than leach so would work in the right conditions - we might be in trouble against lyon in those conditons though

I read that England hadn't won an Ashes Test without a specialist spinner since 2001.
-
Ali's record against Australia is terrible, with bat and ball.

How many Ashes Tests have they played without a specialist spinner since 2001?

Dunno. Don't shoot the messenger.

Crawley averaging 28 with the bat and Leach averaging 38 with the ball under Stokes are modest records whoever our particular favourites may be

It was a genuine question. The only one that springs to mind is Headingley in 2009.

No, it's a fair point.
Also, at what point did Moeen Ali become a specialist spinner? If ever?
-

I'm more worried about the face Stokes has barely batted! He'll still come charging down the track first ball to Cummins....
-
Moeen is having a deep think about whether he fancies this Ashes call up. Be funny if he says yes only for them to go with four seamers and he has to carry the drinks.
-
This is the international version of the club WhatsApp grp.
You available?
You can see the player has seen the message but has refused to reply yet... It's Thursday night... Are you getting a junior into the squad...🤣

Also doesn't send a great message to the next in line if he says no.
-
Interesting that Dan Lawrence played for Essex tonight?
-
Looks as if Mo is going to play then.
-
His Insta post this morning seems to suggest so.
-
Confirmed. Australia will be quaking in their boots.
-
Not a go at Ali but... this isn't a great look for people toiling on the county circuit.

Slap in the face to every English spin bowler and spin bowling all-rounder. Moeen has bowled in one of his last five games and has 3 wickets in his last 10.
-
Who exactly is toiling on the county circuit right now? Not that I agree with Moeen's selection too much but I'm not sure anyone is really putting their hand up
Besides, if there's an environment where Moeen *could* thrive, it's maybe this one under Stokes and McCullum
-
Saw this and was reasonably sold on Ather's and Nasser's arguments:

I think picking Mo is a little bit of a backwards step. A lot to ask of someone to come into an Ashes series when they haven't really bowled much red ball. As it is a young leggie like Ahmed.
You'd think if Stokes isn't bowling much, they'd want reliability and tight overs to rotate the quicks, so Dawson would seem sensible. However, who knows what they plan is with Stokes and McCullum! 😆
-
Totally get those on here saying it’s a backwards step and those spinners playing now in the Championship get overlooked. I do t think it’s ideal myself but look at what England had as options
Ali
Rehan
Dawson
Bess.
Parkinson
Crane
Of the above personally I would of gone Dawson or Rehan. Rehan being a massive risk but he has bags of potential.
We love Mo but he leaks runs and could get hit out of the attack.
Leach is by an absolute street our best spinner so this is a real blow
I’m not convinced Stokes can play a seamers role

He hasn't played proper cricket for 18 months.
