This is why they are a bad idea (as well as being a source of weakness...)

Yes! I have had my square toe Pryzm Halycon get stuck in the ground whilst running my bat in. Luckily the umpire was getting a lift home with me, much easier to get away with in club cricket I guess.

Never had a rounded toe split in the corner, happened twice with square toes!
-
Coupled with a flat face, you're asking for trouble, in my opinion.
-
As long as the square toe is rounded off it’s not a problem from my view of making them. Some that you see are very square basically right angles but I round the edge into the toe to ensure the same basically as a rounded toe.
Breakage wise they can be a bit more susceptible to toe damage if found having made them for a couple of seasons with a square toe option

So my son has a habit of tapping on the inside edge corner. I didnt realize how much pressure he was putting on his bats until he broke one. He's very finicky with his setup and he's not able to shake off the habit.
Any suggestions on strengthening that part of the toe ? More shoe goo ?
His bats have a a semi-square/slightly rounded toe.

Tell him he has to pay for his bats going forward if he breaks the toe like that.

It is a video of an Indian batter being run out because the bat got stuck in the pitch.

@jonny77 does a really good, resilient, waterproof toeguard. Would seriously recommend asking him about getting them done for your son's bats, not expensive at all and has done wonders for my bats on horrible Scottish wickets.

I'd recommended an angled toe (front to back) which helps to prevent this a touch. You're effectively then not hitting the ground with a flat front edge and compressing the willow back as much. You could also then round the toe slightly at the corner at the front but leave a it bit squarer at the back. A PU toe guard will also help prevent feathering and any water damage, which weakens the area.
However, if he's that particular that he just wants a square toe and flat at the front, this will likely be the outcome and you may just have to accept it.

Thanks for the tip @jonny77 . I think the angled toe will work for him.
@Jimbo - i live in sunny seattle :-) I will definitely order a bat next season off Jonny, but a little too far to send the bats in for a refurb.

No worries mate. If you have a cheap orbital sander or similar it's easy enough to sort out. Happy to guide you through if needed, feel free to Whatsapp me with any questions - 07739759246.
You can use a number of things as a toe guard, shoe goo works pretty well.

Thanks @jonny77 - I'll try to shape an old bat first :-)
