Title: Best Bat Mallet(s) to buy
Post by: gihanrat on July 04, 2024, 07:46:28 PM: What are the best bat mallets to buy to ensure good knocking in is done prior to throw downs? Are the standard cheap wooden mallets sufficient, or are there any recommendations for heavier bat mallets to graduate onto after initial knocking in with a "light" bat mallet?

I've heard that Lignumn Vitae bat mallets are thought of as the heaviest bat mallets for size due to the density of the wood, is it still possible to get hold of one of these for the final knocking in part of the process (always seem to be used in the youtube videos on knocking in, but I don't think Elviar's Shed website is available)?

He’s not got any Lignum in stock as he said the last batch he had 80% couldn’t be used.

Where do people think the balance for investment in a LW or LV mallet lie (no. of bats per season or other metrics such as time saved?).

Post by: Giraffe208 on July 06, 2024, 10:47:47 PM: If you play recreational cricket just a bog standard mallet will do you fine. You won’t own enough cricket bats to make the investment, even if you are on this forum!

If you’re a bat maker / offer a knocking in service then you’ll see the volume of bats through your hands to warrant an investment.

I’ve got to my 40’s with a standard mallet and all is good in the world of bat prep.

My AL mallet has had 1 oil over the past year and is in excellent condition.

I think you underestimate the number of bats some of these fiends have/go through 😂

Personally found my LV to be a little overkill, but African Leadwood ones feel a little more wieldy. If you're knocking in maybe 6 bats a season, or offer a knocking service, then worth the investment IMO. Couldn't give you an exact figure on how much time it saves, but it's definitely more effective than using a regular hardwood mallet. If you're going to get a regular hardwood mallet, I've found the GN deluxe style to be better than the rest. Avoid the ones which double up as a grip cone - they are terrible.
