Sounds to me like Essex are blaming oversized bat gauges  :D

Oversized. Theirs/GN's were oversized; the umpire's were the correct size.

Funny this - the problem is when folks who want it to fill the gauge completely, sometimes batmakers really try to force the gauge through. Can mean that the gauges will deform or even crack over time, and as a result, they'll end up accommodating a few mm more. That's without taking into consideration any variations in the gauges when manufactured.

I think the umpires use the steel ones that won’t deform at all after the plastic ones that retailers sell could easily push a bat through

Thank you Ricky Ponting, you whinny little child, for ruining cricket forever.

Bring back the big bats. I can't find the old big Warners. What happened to Kranzbuhler's love of big bats and big clefts? So sad to see the plain-jane state of bat affairs.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's something as stupid as Khushi having used a ton of bat tape for running repairs and that's why it wouldn't fit through. I'd be very surprised if it left GN 'too wide' - would only take a few wraps of tape if the bat was already chunky!

The story I originally heard was that tape had pushed it over.

If they're pushing the absolute limit of the gauge then that makes a lot of sense.

The gauge allows for tape. So it would have to be a serious amount of tape. You would think the umpires would have accurate gauges, but it's possible they don't! 😆

Yes just bring back big bats, made it more fun trying to see who had big heavy bats...
