Can mean that the gauges will deform or even crack over time, and as a result, they'll end up accommodating a few mm more. That's without taking into consideration any variations in the gauges when manufactured.

I think the umpires use the steel ones that won’t deform at all after the plastic ones that retailers sell could easily push a bat through

Bring back the big bats. I can't find the old big Warners. What happened to Kranzbuhler's love of big bats and big clefts? So sad to see the plain-jane state of bat affairs.

I'd be very surprised if it left GN 'too wide' - would only take a few wraps of tape if the bat was already chunky!

If they're pushing the absolute limit of the gauge then that makes a lot of sense.
