Title: Best practice balls for spinners
Post by: gihanrat on March 11, 2025, 12:08:09 PM
Hi, thought I would get some suggestions from the forum.

What are the best practice balls (nets and/or matches) for a spinner to use, and any suggestions of good brands+models - I'm ideally looking to spend around £10-15 on a single ball, may buy max 3 so def not bulk buying.

Are any balls better/more comfortable for finger spinners as opposed to wrist spinners? Likewise, to test myself (finger spinner) what are the least "grippy" good quality balls out there which will then try to make me spin the ball harder ?

Any links to good options for both would be great.

Whatever you can get that is as close to the ball that you'll be using in matches would be my recommendation. Don't overthink it, just get consistent with that and you should be fine.

That being said, I'm not a spinner, so someone on here will know of the nuances far better than I. But from my point of view, there's no real point in practicing with a Test level Dukes ball when you'll be using an entry level Kookaburra ball or something like that.

I'm an offie and like a semi decent quality half white half red ball so you can see the angle the seam is coming out at,.

Oh, good point with that. If it's just purely to practice bowling at a target rather than a batter in the nets, you can try a few of the Aggot style cricket balls. I think there are cheaper versions out there like this - https://www.cricket-hockey.com/en/kookaburra-technique-trainer-ball-2022?SubmitCurrency=1&id_currency=1&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwvr--BhB5EiwAd5YbXoM65Z-C97WQfBjgBEnoqMBBngKb7dV_AvZwcgy0Wgv3xfOtmrbO5hoCcjEQAvD_BwE (https://www.cricket-hockey.com/en/kookaburra-technique-trainer-ball-2022?SubmitCurrency=1&id_currency=1&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwvr--BhB5EiwAd5YbXoM65Z-C97WQfBjgBEnoqMBBngKb7dV_AvZwcgy0Wgv3xfOtmrbO5hoCcjEQAvD_BwE)

Thanks, that sounds a good idea. What white/red ball do you use? I've seen the usual SD rubbish ball which will go out of shape and rip the flesh to the bone after just an over in the nets, so would be keen to receive any recommendations

Thanks, yes it would be purely to practice in the nets and practice matches within the squad. For the nets I like the idea of a half and half ball, never thought about an aggot to practice spin bowling TBH but does sound interesting.

Not looking for test quality, but something that is relatively kind on the spinning fingers and doesn't go out of shape too quickly, around the £10-15 mark would be ideal.

I use one of our spare league match balls. One that's seen 20 overs or so of use, so it's as close as possible to what I'll bowl with. In league cricket I usually bowl my overs straight through once our 15 over powerplay is up, so whatever can replicate those conditions is best.

If you play league see if you can get hold of one that's half decent
