Title: Own your own willow
Post by: Howzat on March 21, 2010, 08:31:15 PM
Just wondering if anyone on here can offer anything similar or better to Kippax's offer?

Im sure you can make more than 10 bats out of 1 tree though cant you?
Theres been topics about this before, people raised questions like what happens if the tree develops a disease/gets hit by lightning etc

doesn't say if it costs extra for the bats being made at the end or is it implied they are free as its your tree

I though kippax were not doing that well?
What happens if they go out of business or another company buys them out??
What happens to the trees then???  :o

You have a certificate of ownership, but Kippax wont make the bats and youll be lumbered with taking care of the tree

Was tempted to get this as a wedding present last year but was unsure about waiting that long. Anyone on here done this? Seems like a good deal for Kippax, they get a good lump of cash up front, the probability of making more bats than they pass onto you and maybe the better quality bits also?

Lots of unanswered questions, but a good idea in principle

Well they plant 3 year old saplings. I think trees normally cut after 15 to 20.

sounds like a decent investment as long as kippax doesn't f**k up!

Its seems a good investment aslong as you dont pay for the final 10 bats. Think i might look further into this as i'll hopefully still be playing in 15-20 years :)

I think it's a good idea - 10 cricket bats for £100 isnt too bad (regardless of the grade), with inflation a grade 1 bat may cost £500-£600 in twenty years time!

Growing tree's is a great plan, but it is very long term and you have to know what you need to do or it can be a complete waste of money.

Tree's need to be sited well and tended to 3 times a year to start with, going down to twice a year. They can take 30 years to hit minimum size for felling, if they fully mature in 12 you will have wide grains and no value so luck does play a part. Disease and many other factors can kill them or ruin them, and they could well be so over planted in 15 years time with Wrights planting 3 for each one felled that they might not even be worth felling.

You need 15ft sett's to start with, 40-60cm will not cut the mustard.
