Title: How many grips...
Post by: 19reading87 on March 29, 2010, 08:05:41 PM
As the title say, curious as to see how many grips people use on their bat....

I just use 1 but on another bat I have half of one on the bottom the a full grip over it.

I had 1 and a half on my bats too, but I've just gone back to aero grips, and I love them - although hoping to try the Xtrax grip soon too.

one chevron, any more and you start to lose the feel, never understood the two grip arguement, although i tried it for a handful of games and got a ton lol, still didnt feel right tho

One thick spiral at the moment.  Always used to use 2 grips but the spirals these days are about the thickness of 2 old school grips.

On one bat I have a one and a half grips (extra half for a looser bottom hand grip) and on my other two full grips. All are yellow chevrons - I like to keep it simple.

Depends on the bat handle, got 3 on my laver but I'm looking at 4 on the joker but I've only one on the impala but wouldn't try working it out I'm just a bit strange i guess and i couldn't begin to explain.

I agree with Rich. It depends on your bat handle. On my CA I have one Xtrax whereas on my MB I have Xtrax but even then it is really thin and balance has been ruined that way. So I might be applying a grip on top of Xtrax

Would say depends on the handle.

For example, my Bubber Sher has a thin handle and technically it has 3 grips (1 Lekka Xtrax which count as two and one rubber grip).

Newbery have one Chevron grip, Salix one spiral grip, MB LE one Chevron type grip and one spiral, CA Lekkka Xtrax (2 grips), Gray Nicolls 1 GN grip

So for me its upto handle.

2 on my Ayrtek, 2 on my GM, 2 on my GN.

I used the Combi grips the other day!! VERY NICE

Bringing up an old topic...

I tried a bat on Sunday with a thin-ish handle (i usually like thicker, or at least thick bottom hand) with only 1 grip on it. It felt very wierd and I didn't really like it but I got runs with it that way and felt I could maneuver the ball better.

Thoughts fellow men....?

One grip generally means you get a better feel of the bat. I have tried 2 grips before, but I have smallish hands and I don't like the handle to feel too thick and with 2 it seems to me that I get less feel. If I really persisted with it I'm sure I would end up liking 2 grips, just like I'm sure you would end up liking 1 should you persist with it.

I have always used two grips on bats, until I came over here. Basically due to not having a gripping cone readily available I just used one grip, found it weird but now love it and feel like I have more control somehow.

Strange ain't it mate.

Does anybody use inners whilst batting which makes the feel different....?

Always wear inners. just a standard pair. I know a few guys who use keeping inners. god knows why. may as well put a pillow inbetween the bat and the hands. works for them though
Title: Re: How many grips...

Same with inners...used to wear them in oz, no longer wear them over here! Think the colder climate might help though...

Never wear batting inners, but have changed the grip on my Monster to just a spiral and quite like it as it's heavier than the Hattori which has half an octo under a chevron. Still not got round to using the GM shock absorba grips yet

Always used shock absorber grips, but they felt to thin on the bottom hand of my ayrtek so have gone to half a pyramid grip under a chevron

Yeah i use them as well, at the moment i have a normal grip underneath and a coiled grip on top, because the handle isn't very big.

2 chevrons, it makes sure the handle isn't too thick.

Always used to use 2 but now just one thick spiral or a double chevron. Like having 2 grips but less chance of the grips twisting and slipping against each other. Also cheaper.

I know I'm bumping an old thread but I normally have only one grip on my bat but my new bats handle is pretty thin and also it's a low sweet spot as I'm a driver so to help pick up I want to put on another grip, how do you do this.... I know it's a dumb question but do you just use a cone or is there another special way for adding a new grip over another?

Just a tip from experience it's easier to add more than one grip if the grips are thin chevron Type also to assist pickup just add cut grips to the top third of the handle.

i have for around 3 years now used at least 4 grips (sometimes 5). but had a bat from b3 and i had 2 extra binds put on the bat and it feels just the same. as the grips they used slip / twist slighty. i would suggest this to anybody who uses more than 2 grips.

I've tried messing about and doing an extra bind on the bottom hand and adding a Salix hybrid grip seems very comfortable only tried breifly in a net but it feels comfortable and balanced.

I'm just returning to the game after a dozen or so years away. There now seems to be quite a few different styles of grip (octopus, chevron, snake etc), with varying thicknesses. Presumably, the weight of different grips varies considerably, too.

Does anyone know the typical weight (and thickness?) of varying grip types? Or do several people know the weight and/or thickness of their current grips?
This would be a useful database of information to fine tune the bat weight and handle thickness.

For the record, largish hands, I used to use two old style, thin grips, new bat has one thinnish grip and one thick (scale-like outer).

I have been playing around with the two grips on my new bat, trying to reduce the weight a little. A little info on weights from my very small sample.

One grip, a scale grip offered most thickness - it added 1.6cm to the circumference of my handle (to 13.6cm). It weighed 43g (1.5oz). I wa sexpecting greater weight, given the thickness.
A Gray nicolls grip was the lightest I found (at Talent Cricket), but there may well be lighter grips. It added 1.2cm of circumference and weighed 37g (1.3oz).
Another two grips weighed 43g and 44g. These were of similar thickness (but not measured), to the GN grip. This range of weight, between a very small sample of grips, amounts to around a quarter of an oz.

I have used some lightweight foam rubber (a sort of mesh, useful for gripping) to act as the lower grip, weighing just 11g (plus a little shoe goo) and adding an additional 0.1cm to the handle diameter, above that of the original (43g) grip. This has reduced the weight by around 1.0 oz. - not earth-shattering, but a useful step in the right direction. Of course, if there was a way to reduce the weight by 1.0oz from towards the bottom of the blade, that would be more significant; with the effect of leverage.

Thought it was a good time to bring up an old forum favourite topic

It's always an interesting topic to see the variation people use.

What is your preference for the number of grips? Inners? Full finger or fingerless...?
Title: Re: How many grips...
Post by: Jimbo on May 17, 2023, 09:34:53 AM
I've gone back to a single grip, and using slimmer handles. Way better control of the bat with my hobbit size hands.
Title: Re: How many grips...
Post by: Paese on May 17, 2023, 09:45:08 AM
I hate the sponginess of multiple grips and so only use one. I prefer a thicker handle though because it gives me more control, so either have to get creative with them myself to get the feel I want (eg. medical tape, extra binding etc) or buy with a thick handle (eg. Aldred). Either way, I never have more than a single grip.

I don't use inners of any kind, and if I am in long enough then I would rather call for my other gloves. I like to be able to feel as much of the contact of ball on bat, extra grips and inners etc take that away for me.

Prefer to use one grip but will use two on any handle that is a bit too thin such as a Keeley or WCW.

Love the handles on a Scott, GM or Aldred.

All these years of playing still undecided whether 2grips actually improves pick up on a bat slightly too heavy

I remain of the view it just makes the bat heavier and makes no difference to pick up. Better technique can help more than a second grip.

Just one grip for me, the important bit is having the handle right in the first place - really there shouldn't be a need for more than one grip IMO.

All the super skinny handles from brands just trying to save scale weight is the real issue but that's enough thread entirely :D

Personally I love a skinny handle as I have small hands.

So one grip (lords taverner grip if poss) and that's that.

Best bat I've ever used was one of mine I made with a skinny handle replicated off a Malik I had a few years back and I've never looked back.

I find that for thin or medium round handle bats with mid low / low swells 2 grips definitely feel like they enhance the pick up, assume its creating a counterbalance of sorts but will leave that to the experts to confirm.
Currently experimenting with a chevron and kookaburras silicone grip which currently makes the handle feel softer/ slightly spongey. The plot twist is I havent decided if thats a good thing or not!

I like a chunkier grip also, despite not have big hands. I would normally have medium thickness handle and a chunky grip. If I were to get a new custom bat (2.9 - 2.10 with low - mid middle) designed and made, I'm unsure whether to get a thicker handle (more weight) and single grip, or thin/regular handle plus two grips. I guess what I'm wondering is, does a heavier wooden handle actually work well as a counterweight for a bottom heavy bat to give a more balanced pick up (i'm all about the pick up) or does it just give more weight due to more wood in handle which could be put to better use in the blade for striking..... thoughts?

Years ago I was lent one of Neil Radford's bats which had 2 grips ; Worcestershire cricketer for those that don't remember him. Loved how it felt and scored a fifty with it. Have always used 2 grips ever since. On my B3 I've actually got 2 1/2 grips. I'm a small bloke, so not big hands, but like a bigger handle

Love stories like this. Something you'll always remember and taking that into your game.

Do people find they have as much control using a thicker handle compared to a thin one?

As long as you're still getting a full wrap of your hand around the handle, which surely you are unless you've really gone crazy with extra grips, you should be getting more 'control' with a thicker handle. The thicker the handle is the harder it will be for it to twist in your hand.

Only thing I've noticed with a really thick handle was losing a bit of the ability to manipulate the ball, opening the face and playing more deft shots was harder.

It’s a trade off I think, larger handles on GM and maybe Warsop I find it easier to play straighter which is an on going method.

Picked up some round handed bats and honestly find them very difficult to use.

I used to play with a West Indian guy who used 5 grips and blasted it everywhere.

When I asked him he said Clive Lloyd used 6 grips…..blimey!

A guy in my team uses a bat which is 3lb. With that, he uses 4 and 1/2 grips. It really is something else. He's an opening batsman too

Is it 3lb before or after the extra grips? If before, that's a lot of weight to be swinging around!

Yep, before. It’s honestly incredible. I’ll try and grab a photo this we.

Where do people stand on chunkier handle versus multiple grips? Personally think I prefer the thicker handle rather than a bit more of a spongey double grip. I'm not sure how much difference there is in terms of wood weight left in handle as opposed to two grips. Plus two grips riding up the bat would drive me bonkers ha!

I would definitely prefer a thicker handle with only one grip on, it's a much better feeling than double gripping in my opinion.

I like a thicker handle and I prefer an oval handle. Two grips make it too spongy so I add three layers of kinesio tape stretched back and front on the handle. This thickens and adds a slight oval to the handle.

On the knob I also add two layers of magnetic tape as a counter balance. Works for me and the people I sell bats too like it as they choose to keep it on.

That looks good, I've been using hockey tape for my handle knobs so I'll try some of that magnetic tape out. Thanks for sharing.

Glad to help. Two layers cut to length. For some reason I prefer the cuts to be at 45 degrees. To keep it in place I use K tape and this also reduces the sharpness of the magnetic tape so it is less likely to cut through your grip.

Until today i was using 2 grips, one spiral and the original one that comes with the bat.. .but i bought a new bat and i wasnt comfortable enough with the balance of it and it felt a bit heavy... so i tried it with a 3rd grip and feels quite better.... so at least in this bat will be using 3...
