-
robert pack is only 45 mins down the road from me :D gonna be watching northants a lot this season if they get sehwag! no doubt ill pop in and see what his work is like
They're not. The BCCI revoked his NOC
-
Definitely not going to happen unless they have a complete turn around as they have revoked the singing.
-
might have to try this robert pack out and would like to try a saf and talisman bat to rate them but isuspect i have annoyed both to much for them to give me a go with one
-
They're not. The BCCI revoked his NOC
im gutted it was all set last time i looked. india want to drag him around zimbabwe for a few t20s dont they? or something like that
-
Ahhh ok no worries mate :)
-
not heard much about robert pack where do people who know rate him(sorry for high jacking the topic)
-
Money no option
1: John Newbery - GN Scoop
2: John Newbery - Dynadrive
3: Anything else by John Newbery
4: Julian Millichamp - M&H Original
5: SS Jumbo prototype
-
Money no option.
1, Tim Keeley Pro,
2, Nothing else out there......
-
Mike what bat do you use?
-
One made for Sachin, plus a lighter version as back up, both made by Tim Keeley. Sadly I have reached the top of the bat mountain, will still look at the other brands but until someone can better him I'm sticking with the best.
-
Wow what I'd give to have one of those :O
When I consider the best bat I owned was my first, a Harrow GM Purist 606 and you have one made for Sachin :)
-
I'd swap with you any day, you have youth and a long time to keep improving your collection, I can't do the bats justice!!!!
-
Lol I'm not sure I'd do the bat any more justice than you will. You have experience whereas I am naive ;)
-
Money no option
1. Salix Fera G1
2. Newbery Grizzly or GT 335
3. Kookaburra Blade 950
4. SS Limited Edition
5. Laver and Wood Custom

1) Laver and Wood Private Bin (thats the £1000 odd quid one with the net bat aswell yeah?)
2) Very Top Screaming Cat
3) Gunn & Moore Icon LE, made with the pro willow by their batmaker
4) Top of the rage Redback Paradox
5) Puma Ballistic 6000 (last years, Pink or Green stickers would do me)
All custom made to my specs of course
-
who is robert pack?

-
He has a small workshop and finishes part made bats for himself and Puma.
-
does anyone have his contact details?
-

-
Money no option.
1, Tim Keeley Pro,
2, Nothing else out there......
Come on Talisman, money no option and you wouldn't go for a classic from John Newbery or pic up an original iconic bat
-
You couldn't use one so unless we change it to money no object and time travel allowed I'd not worry. Plus despite the fact that John Newbery must be the greatest bat maker ever his bats would not be as good as Tim's today with the improvement in willow conditioning and pressing.
We must go forward!!!
-
1. Mongoose COR3
2. Laver Signature
3. Screaming Cat
4. Newbery (A custom one)
5. Joker
-
1. Newbery Custom
2. Screaming Cat Custom
3. Laver and Wood Custom
4. SAF Custom
5. Redback Custom
-
unless we change it to money no object
Money no obstacle and money no object very similar?
Plus despite the fact that John Newbery must be the greatest bat maker ever his bats would not be as good as Tim's today with the improvement in willow conditioning and pressing.
We must go forward!!!
.....and I'd still plump for a John Newbery original bat made by the man himself that is a piece of history I'd love to have/own, infact you could probably get me one :D It is bats I cant get hold of that are more desirable to me. I could, if I asked nicely, get one from Tim Keeley and buy a screaming cat from Julian Millichamp, I respect & admire those guys immensely, but can you get hold of John Newbery original easily, nope, unless money wasn't an obstacle
You couldn't use one
Not sure what you mean by "couldn't use one", unless you meant my very individual batting style :D
-
Talisman - I know you've owned tons of bats and value your opinion on them - what other batmakers have you used to compare Mr keeley to? Kranzbuhler? Laver? Millichamp?
My 5, in no particular order would be:
1) Laver Signature
2) Stuart Kranzbuhler custom
3) Julian Millichamp custom
4) Tim Keeley custom
5) Talisman special Laminate
My current Laver is the best bat I've ever owned - the next 3 are just based on reputation from the forums, and the last one is just curiosity.
I'd have to go to his workshop in person to select willow and discuss specs for all of these, so some nice overseas trips involved there!
-
...based on the fact that I personally think the way forward for custom bats is a personal service I'll probably never own any of the above bats until I can afford to take trips to the various locations.

who are these people i have neverr heard of them???
-
Laver - http://www.laverwood.co.nz/
Stuart Kranzbuhler - Australian based batmaker for Gray Nics - http://www.gray-nicolls.co.uk/
Julian Millichamp, formally of Millichamp and Hall, now set up in Aus with his own company - http://www.screamingcat.com.au/
Tim Keeley - Head batmaker at Newbery - http://www.newbery.co.uk/
Talisman Laminates - God knows where these get made, but they sure as hell play well, my number one bat for the season
Hope this helps cricket boy -
-
thanx mate but i only ment stuart kranzbuhler and tim keeley but thanxs any way.
-
1) Newbery Pros bat
2) Tip Top Screaming Cat
3) Reback Limited Edition Custom
4) Tailsmen perfect storm ( one of those crazy light clefts)
5) I would have to have something Asian to complete the collection
-
"I would have to have something Asian to complete the collection"
you and a few others I suspect
I'd quite like...
a top salix bat
a top newbury bat
a top Redback
a custom SS as my "something Asain"
a bat I made...
the final one would be the most expensive, as I would have to spend years learning how to make a bat to the appropriate Laver/Millichamp standard - as that isn't going to happen, I will go for the Screaming Cat.
-
Talisman Laminates - God knows where these get made, but they sure as hell play well, my number one bat for the season
....of course I'm sure you'll only use said bat for practice and exhibition type matches, and not for any competitive cricket....
-

Cheat
-
The bat was repaired :)
-
As I said... cheat
-
Well if ponting got away with it all summer under the scrutiny of the worlds press, then i count myself unlucky to be caught out by the only umpire in the league who has the ability to see 22 yards and detect a hidden lamination - i'd even buy him a pint :)
-
Have you got any proof that Ponting's bat was laminated?
-
None whatsoever ashvir - just word of mouth from a batmaker that is all. I cannot provide you with photographic evidence, nor can i show you pictures revelaing a lamination, in fact you i could be completely bullshitting you :)
-
Anyway- we digress and this would put me in Fattus's bad books, and trust me thats the last place you want to be......the mans got a mean streak a mile wide!!!!
My top 5 bats would be....
1) Laver - replica of St8bats, perfect bat for me.
2) Screaming Cat - Would ask for a super light cleft and let him go mad and creative with it!
3) Newbery from Mr.Keeley - A sachin profile.
4) A Xiphos shape from Kransbuhler
5) Would be rude not to try a Monster from H4L with one of those super tight grainers - yes plase!
-
What about a SAF anyone?
-
Highly reccomended rubin!
-
What about a SAF anyone?
I have one - Andy makes a wonderfully balanced bat, comes highly recommended from me too!
-
I wouldn't mind Mehnga Ram making me a bat :D
-
I wouldn't mind Mehnga Ram making me a bat :D
Tom - Enter stage left
-
Where is mehnga ram making bats nowadays?
-
BAS?
-
Yep. Mengha is working for Beat All Sports
-
Makes me want one even more :D
-
1. Julian Millichamp
2. Tim Keeley
The other three would be any from H4L, Redback, Talisman, Vantage, Saf etc... the batmakers on here have my admiration. If you use hand tools and traditional methods I am a supporter. I'm not against machines but a human will always get more out of each willow cleft.
I know this will raise some eyebrows but a heartwood Custom Hunts. I've had 3 and they've always been incredible.
-
I think Hunts County are underrated!
-

I've got a Glory Custom, probably half heartwood at the moment? outer edge for me (a righty) so it's in the right place for me. One of our lads gets them at dead low prices, and all our kit (shirts, etc) is Hunts as well. really cheap, really good quality!
-
hunts make quality stuff but their branding lets them down

-
I thort Mehnga Ram was just a rumour?
-
1) Salix Pod 1 Grade one
2) Mongoose MMi3 Super Premium
3) Laver & Wood Signature

2, Talisman Idol,
3, SAF Ultra Balance,
4, SillyBats Han Hun Tribute 10000Plus Custom G0+++++++++++,
5, Fattus Pussus Value Range £19.99 for English Willow, English made inc 7 year warranty.
-
Does anyone know to get a custom bat from Mengha Ram.. Something reliable not something made at the BAS factory and being told its made by Mengha Ram...
-
I would ask Asad what he knows, he has been to the factory many times.
-
I told you to keep the company name under wraps, now you've just gone and leaked what is probably the biggest forum exclusive for quite some while.......cheers mike. Also, you missed out 4 +'s and 2 *'s at the end of the bat name, otherwise it looks stupid.
-
1.saf custom
2.laver custom
3.newberry mjolnir c6+
4.newberry thruxton sps
5.bosom double D ;)
-
I am surprised there isn't more mention of Salix. Andrew Kember is a pretty useful batmaker.
-
Well no one mentioned Bradbury or really put gray nics up there!! Excluding the chap in Australia, and mengha Ram, i guess that is one legend we would all like to hear about or see a picture of him making a bat!!!! And John Newbury sounds like he is the father of modern bat making, and no one metioned Duncan fearnley either. And kook they got mentioned once, strange makes you wonder if they even have a bat maker left in Oz? And Andy at Saf and Gary at redback mentioned in most replys just goes to show the art of bat making is alive and well in England and James Laver etc the list goes on i wonder who does make the bats for the big brands and what they think!!!
-
Interesting views here as to who makes bats etc. Kookaburra have never made bats, purely a brand.
-
I never knew that kook did not make bats their own bats and were just a brand. And the Tim Keely sachin profile bat, does he or has he had bats made for him by Tim Keely of newbury then?
-
In no particular order:
1) A Redback Paradox: The profile looks ideal in my opinion. The reputation that comes with Redback is second to none on these forums, and from the bats I have seen and used, they are brilliant bats. I would definitely have one of these made if money was no obstacle.
2) A Screaming Cat: Not a particular model, however, knowing that is made by Julian Millichamp would be enough for me! I would love the opportunity to try out bats made by one of the best batmakers in the world.
3) CJI Ultimate Special Edtion: I know most of you are going to say that this is a poor choice, however, I have seen the first 7 of 50 of these bats, and they are stunning bats. Balanced and powerful bats, nice pick ups, but being a student with no job means the £200 price tag is out of my price range!
4) Gunn and Moore Icon Original LE: Everytime I see one of these bats, I want one. The profile is lovely, and I think the stickers looks top notch. I know these bats are machine made, however, I would love to try one out.
5) Millichamp and Hall Distinction: Huge bat with a lowish middle, slightly different to what I have been custom to over the last couple of seasons, however, the general size of these bats makes me want one.
-
I am surprised there isn't more mention of Salix. Andrew Kember is a pretty useful batmaker.
1) Salix Pod 1 Grade one
2) Mongoose MMi3 Super Premium
3) Laver & Wood Signature
4) Custom make Top of the range kookaburra
5) Custom make Top of the range Gunn And Moore
*COUGH* First on the list bud ;)
-
In no particular order
1. Saf- fabrica? Seems to be alot of hype and hicky is probably a fair judge.
2. Millichamp and hall harlequin- my favourite ever bat, has the ultimate profile in my view, balance is second to none. Dont know why i didnt buy another one really
3. Talisman- my new one feelts great, pings wonderfully.
4. Salix- like them alot, old profile.
5. SS- Indians like them so thats good
-
Tough one this but what i would like to own:
1) Julian Millichamp Screaming Cat Custom
2) Laver and Wood by James Custom
3) Marty Graham Custom
To be honest i can't pick a 4 and 5 without just adding someone as an after thought so i am leaving it at three and really i only wanted to leave julian and james.
-
Seedy - that almost looks like a custom bat family tree - yuou just need to stick John Newbury at the top!
-
Who's Marty Graham?
-
Marty Graham runs MG2 bats in New Zealand - he used to work for Laver & Wood and learned bat making from James Laver.
He makes Aero pro bats as well as bats for at least one NZ international
-
Ohh, thanks.
-
I have a MG2 at the moment ( belongs to Mr.Hosk but im giving it a good old refurb) - it has the carbo cane handle and it weighs 2.5lb for a fairly sizeable bat - nice blade as well, it looks like it has a similar pressing to the lavers.
Didn't realise he made pro-bats for aero - a useful little nugget of info :)
-
I will get one of each at some point possibly for next season.

-
1) M&H Distinction 2011+ - Simply greatest 'all rounder' bat there is IMO
2) Screaming Cat Series 1 or 3 - Must be something about them to make them special. Tho would take the stickers off to have the hidden surprise of the power of it!
3) M&H Distinction <2010 - I prefer bats with a lower middle, and this - if you can find one (with the toe intact!) - is the best of the business
4) Laver & Wood Ultra Pregnant Reserve - Just for fun!
5) Mongoose MMi3 - the shape looks like a LOT of fun, and if you've got to get one 20/20 bat, then might as well get the most extreme example!
3 of the above are either in hand or on their way. The Scat and MMi3 are on the list!
