I'm a Slow Left Arm Spinner, and I'm really struggling to get a repeatable action.
I netted on Tuesday and started poorly, just rolling it and not spinning it, then for some reason it just clicked, and i bowled nicely for a while, then I went poo again.
Is it better to not think about it, just run up and bowl - or think a lot about it to make sure it comes out right every time?
-
Try and get into a rythm and don't over think the process....mental rehearsal helps when your not actually netting apparently, however repetition sets in once we have formed the routine both mentally and physically. Make sure ur run up is always the same length, arm position is the same upon release as well as landing foot direction etc.
Covered a bit of it in bio-mechanics as well as sports psychology at Uni as my chosen area to look at

Mentally reward yourself with a big meat pie for each good ball and you will never have a problem again.....
-
will have to remember that one as bowled pace for first time in 5yrs last night and body is telling me off for it today :(
-
think of everything you can control about your action and then control it, simple!
break your whole delivery down in to segments and concentrate making it the same every time (for example, make sure your run up is the same length every time)
-
As a spinner you should be concentrating about solely what is happening at the batmans end, are you making him play the right shot each time? Concentrate on getting each ball on that money making spot, this can be rehearsed by visually teaching yourself or by physically doing it.....

Oh - you're alive then? I thought your e-mail must be broken, or you hadn't paid your bill again. I should've mentioned I have a willow tree for sale - that might have aroused your interest!!!

That's a bit bitchy for catty....

Yes it was, I cannot deny it.
However, you know how demanding customers are, and I've got my reputation to think of. Plus I'm on my second beer, and I'm hopelessly addicted to your stock!

I'd phone you and take an order right now but Bev has my phone......

Have this problem all the time at the start of the season.
Start in an empty net, put a kids hula hoop down in the area you want to pitch the ball.
1. Stand on the delivery line, and just bowl with a small follow through, focusing on the target and wrist/finger action. once you have placed 5-10 of them in a row in the hoop with enough spin to satisfy your self.
2. 1 Step run up now, still focusing on the area and spin, try and keep the same pace (this helps with the problem of killing the spin) now you should be aiming for 10+ in the hoop.
3. Full run up now. Again, keep your mind on area and rev's. still keeping the same pace. and now, mentally. You should be focused and calm enough to be putting them on the spot even a good amount of rev's.
Once your happy with out a batsman in the net, go bowl at someone. but dont worry about knocking him over or making him look a tw@ like us spinners love to do.
Hope this help's pal :)

Maybe you could try and make some sort of "check points" during your action, to make sure your repeating the same action?
-
The more you practise the better you get.

Wrong, if you practise bowling with a crap technique. overall, your f-ucked !
Takes alot of hard work and manipulation to gain quality consistency !
-
yup and sometimes bowling to much can cause you to pick up a bad habit, or accidently changed your action, you need breaks of 2 days or so, every couple of weeks imo
-
Fattus - when I initially read this I was thinking how complicated it must be for a spinner to get a simple, repeatable action, with a nice strong pivot - thinking it is so much easier being a medium pace dobber, then I re-read it and laughed (sorry) - I think what you need to do is get fit!
Reading between the lines, what I read your comment to say is... I rolled up to the net, was a bit stiff and didn't warm up properly so bowled pies, after a while I was loose and bowled well for a bit, then I got tired and my bowling went off the boil.
how about warming up before you start - bowl as much as possible to build up your stamina and think about doing some form of other mid week stamina training. I am sure Mrs Cattus would be happy to help (!)
Although I do like the meat pie idea and it is also definitely better not to think about it

Yeah some good drills being thrown out there and I fear Buzz may be right!
But for your action, just get someone, anyone, to watch you bowl like 12-18 deliveries, he'll notice one or two things your not doing consistently and then bowl while only thinking of them, so that your not over complicating anything just thinking of one or two things that aren't set in y0out muscle memory yet (I'm presuming that your normal action would be) that should help the action. Then again if what Buzz says Is true I'm sure there a gym somewhere in the close vicinity!! Get a personal trainer and he'll tell you all about the wonderful art of stretching :(

Guys, I'm fat - not stupid! I've been playing and netting for around 20 years, so I think I may have wised up to the whole warming up part by now!
Thanks for your patronising, if well intentioned advice - next time I need to determine my (No Swearing Please) from my elbow, I'll know which two guys to ask!!
However, Buzzy-poos you are half right, I think the fitness plays a part towards the end of the net session, so only vegetable pies and wobbly jogs from now on :)
-
i used to have this problem all the time!
now i dotn think about it i just try to get my front arm as high as i can and my action works fine now
so i focus on my arm high and then whip down on it as hard as i can and it enable me to bowl quick and accurately
-
Sorry I didn't mean to be patronising!!
I've been netting for 20odd years and still bowl pies!
-
Fattus - you didn't bowl pies when we did nets.....we'd already eaten them all before you got the chance! ;)
-
Right Hoskoid - just because you are a prime hunk of beefcake, I think I'll show all you thin people - Ayrtek, BlackCat I'm looking at you! All you old people - Talisman, SAF Bats I'm looking at you! The pies are gone, the running has begun.
Then I shall become FittusCattus, and I shall open a whole new can of 'whuppass' on y'all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Classic! :D

Thin...me....im going to have to print that one out and put it on the fridge :D first time that has ever been said about my figure haha
Sayin that my gym membership started up again yesterday after a 3 month suspension so getting back in there to trim up a bit.....my left arm slow bowling will be even slower next net session :) whenever it is ;)
