Title: The 3lb Joker. Well 2lb 15oz. With Pics
Post by: m4ttc on May 13, 2010, 09:58:50 AM
After a long wait, the "3lb" Joker has finally arrived.

I would like to thank Charlie for resolving the issue for me.  It is clear that he has been let down a little bit by a few parties but he has certainly come up trumps with the 2nd Joker.
Charlie has had problem obtaining a cleft that is large enough to get a bat this size.  Remember, it is larger than a normal 3lb bat as the Joker has its wood redistributed to make it thinker than conventional bats.  As a result, he has had to supply a bat from the pro pile that has branded edges.  He says that these bats are not normally for sale and we will see pros using them in matches/nets later in the season.

You can see from the photos it is a large bat. I have put a 10p piece on the edge to give you some idea of the size of the edges along with a photo next to my 2' 8.5 Joker.  The new bat pings well with the mallet and the pickup improved alot by adding a double thick grip to the thin grip that was already on it.  It has a nice blemish free grain structure with 10 grains.

As a point of note, because the bat was ordered before the season and has only arrived a few games into the season (plus I have ordered 2 Jokers), Charlie has compensated me with a Black Cat 'Shadow'.  This bat is a real beaut, 2.8 oz and a great pickup !  The shape is virtually identical my Laver & Wood Private Bin Carbo 'special profile' and the finish is excellent.  The bat pings really well with the mallet and feels like it has been lightly pressed so I expect that the emphasis will be on performance rather than longevity.  I am looking forward to taking this down to the nets after I have knocked it in with the mallet to see how matches up against my other bats but the signs are good.

I would like to thank Charlie at Black Cat for sorting the issues out for me and look forward to using their bats this season.

Matt is right about the edge stamps. There is a bucket with a few very special bits of wood in. These have the JKR branding on the outside edge, as these will be sold stickerless for obvious reasons.

Please don't ask for one of these, they're not for general sale!  I just owed one to Matt after he was mucked around a bit.

Hope you enjoy the bats!

Cheers

Like the branding on  the edges - tres cool! Looks like you got a magnificent deal in the end matt, just like the Guinness adverts clearly state "good things come to those who wait" :D

Not that I am trying to let down your Joker bat as it surely looks like a master piece, but it just reminded me of a bat that owned last year.

Around 60 mm edges.
G1 Lush English Willow in 2.15... it had an eye popping pickup just by looking at the sheer muscle.

This bat would terrorize the fielders and bowlers alike, and send the umpire into a jaw dropping shock. Just look at with the BDM bat that had a quite thick edges.

given all the stickers around the edges and its size - can I assume that is a laminate bat, which the Jocker is not?

Nope, it was not a laminated bat ... one super solid piece of very light G1 EW.

It looks laminated as it has the full edge sticker to hide the join, check again.

Talisman is correct, until this year, all CJI Limited Edition bats were laminated (2 pieces of wood).

Kind of strange that the edge sticker covers the shoulders of the bat too. Detective Kovert reckons that's there to hide something!

If I had it, I would definitely check it again but it's long gone now. Thanks for the insight.
