Title: Somerset/Bristol Cricket?
Post by: c1arkie on May 20, 2010, 09:52:06 PM
OK, I know a few of the guys are from this area who use the forum and I need some help.

My Club are organising a tour to the West Country this summer and decided this area is a goer as any further becomes awkward travel-wise with no motorway. We have the option of staying in Bristol or Minehead and have no idea about the differences in experience beyond the obvious that Brizzle is relatively built up and Minehead is a smaller coastal town.

Any opinions on the local cricket/grounds and where would be a better 5 days?

depends what you want from your tour mate. i live in minehead and play for a few village teams around west somerset, some of the grounds around here are really nice. look up bridgetown cc and timberscombe cc on google. if your after a fairly queit tour but with a few nights out on the town then minehead is your best bet. but if you want to go for a 5 day piss up on the town then bristol is the place lol. i also play cricket in bristol every other week and some of the grounds i play at are nice whereas others are rather urban... (no offence you bristol fellas!)

We are mostly about the cricket, I think Brizzle covers more bases though if people are going to kick up a fuss about the extra-curricular activities! Personally I just want to see some nice grounds and tracks!!

you'll see some very nice village grounds around here! but not many nice tracks im afraid.... we have quite a reputation for the famous 'west somerset wickets'.... although we have the old belter at some clubs

I play B&D on a Saturday and north somerset on a Sunday so get to see the best of both in terms of village sides and larger clubs so I'm sure u cud get a mix of both

I'll vouch for that, down here around minehead (my ground, bagborough is only 17 miles away from minehead) we have very picturesque (sp) grounds, I'm sure if you come down here myself (mainly my father who used to be fixture sec) and ian would be able to sugest grounds to go to

Looks from my info as if we are going the Bristol route, purely because we are sorting it a bit late and it gives us the best chance of getting fixtures with more Clubs being there. Will let you know if Im coming to tonk any of you once the Tour company get the itinerary sorted  :P

My old club tour to Bristol, and have for 30 odd years or so. I've never been myself, but they play in some decent places (by all accounts) and the nightlife is good too! Might be able to get you a few clubs contacts as im still in touch with the secretary at the club

Ha, as long as the nightlife is fine. No value for me on this tour even as a batsman, not used to anything flat, hard or bouncy!

This is now next week, totally buzzing and hope the weather holds out!

Sadly a few teams dropped out of fixtures on us due to ground availability issues, but weve just about got a full schedule - now including a 2-day game against Bristol! The others are T20 thrashes, quite looking forward to Clevedon as that looks an interesting place.

Hows your schedule looking mate? Could have a word with my club depending when it was? Lydney CC one of the only grounds with a tree in the outfield.

We are full now mate, thanks for the offer tho. Seems there are lots of Clubs up for games down that way, that kind of friendly/social cricket has almost died a death up here.

We are now playing a Twenty20 knock against Wookey Indians which I think is a pretty social standard just to ease us in after a days travel and a chance for tailenders to open the batting etc. Then Bristol over 2 days and a Clevedon Twenty20 between. Then back to the drudgery of midtable in Cheshire as our promotion push has just gone completely off the rails.

Tuesday and Thursday. No idea what the format is or how we are likely to get on... I assume it will be 2 innings per-side to account for a potential collapse by one of the team (ie. us!) ruining a 2-innings, 160 over game.
