Title: My Newbery Krakatoa (Players)
Post by: Cover_Drive on May 25, 2010, 05:30:43 AM
Hi,

Hope you all are well and are doing great! Its my first bat review and second overall so pardon me if there are any mistakes or anything :(

Alright, so I was in search of buying an English made bat. THe reason why I specifically wanted English made was because I have two bats which are top notch bats in there ranges and are going well but sadly they are not English made. So I said to myself its turn of English bat.

I had been really big fan of Newbery and Redback. I love both brands from my heart! I had been really impressed with Newbery's craftsmanship (Prior to my bat I had held and seen two Newbery bats closely in my hands). I tried my luck at Redback first and everything went smoothly and I was on verge of buying a bat. Literally everything had been sorted out. But at the end unfortunate thing occurred which were not expected whatsoever got me a back seat in purchasing a Redback. I must also add one thing that Gary is one of the finest bloke you will ever find on this planet.

Then I tried my luck with Newbery. I had been in touch with many people which did give me a doubt. But at the end I landed at Uzi Sports and Asad Bhai was just awesome to deal with. He was very helpful and kept sending me emails back and forth and immensely helped me in selecting a proper bat according to my specs. So after lengthy conversations we had decided I will go for Krakatoa. Asad Bhai, was really kind that he had emailed me pictures of couple of bats which made easier for me to select a bat.

I had asked for 2.7ish whereas i usually prefer and use 2..9-2.10ish. The reason why I asked for that weight was because of the bat which I was selecting. Since I chose Krakatoa which has a low sweetspot which I know makes a pickup feel a bit heavier than normal so I kept that thing in my mind and did the calculation. So I did receive what I had asked for and it my theory was kinda right. Due to its low sweetspot it did make feel a bit heavier for me. I still haven't played with the bat so I am not sure about its ping or anything but from what I tested the bat pings off really nicely and seems to have quite long sweetspot. The oval handle seems to be nice as well and fits nicely in my hands. Hopefully I will test the bat in nets on Wednesday and will update you guys

Shipping

Bat was shipped on 10th and it was here on 16th. I wasn't expecting it to be here so soon and was quite surprised when it came a bit early according to my thoughts. However, the bat was not picked up on 16th. In fact, it was picked up on 19th because I had moved into a new house and bat was shipped to my old address. The new owner of old house didn't tell me that my package is here but I figured it out via tracking number.

Uzi Sports Service

Asad Bhai, was just amazing! It was first time I was purchasing a bat online so I was really nervous and scared. He answered every single question I had. One can't imagine how nervous I was and due to that I asked Asad Bhai lots of question which contained silly questions as well but he was so kind that he answered every single question I had. On top of that he was really quick in replying to my emails. I literally got his replies within 10-25 minutes. If such rating existed where one can be rated greater than the highest figures then Asad Bhai would be the first one to get that. I would rate him 11 out of 10. He is very down the earth guy. I am looking forward to deal with him in future

Pardon me if it was too long or too short.

If you have any question please don't hesitate asking me. I would love to answer them :)

Cheers

Ummmm, i hate to sound like a party pooper - but i do not like that profile, all edge and no spine. The quality of the bat looks phenomenal with very nice grains as well, i'm sure it will play well but just wouldnt be my preference of bat shape.
Sounds like Asad was very patient as well.

If someone would like to enlighten me as to how that bat isn't of SPS standard then i'm all ears....

Dom it is a personal choice, some like it , some don't. few Gloucestershire 2nd team players are playing with exactly the same profile and seems to be scoring well.

Same profile as mine and mine flys as there is more wood on the bat so easier to time the ball

Agree 100%. I don't think they pick up very well at all either, the Krakatoa is my least favourite of the Newbery shapes (and stickers) this season.

Cover_Drive, if you were buying this bat again. But on the shelf. Would you have chosen it over and above others? What made you purchase the Krakatoa?

Sorry to disagree with you Tom but I think the pick up is fantastic on these bats. i don't think you can make a decision on the pick up by looking at the photos or the profile

To be fair he did say he wanted a heavier pick-up for the weight :)

Not really - he requested a lighter weight as he assumed the bat would 'pick up' slightly heavier. There are very few people i know who would request for the bat to 'pick up' heavier than it's actual weight.

Anyway - the bat still looks excellent, as do most Newbery's player's and SPS's.

sorry i meant that he got it lighter than normal because of the pick-up  :)

The few I've seen certainly don't pickup anyway near as well as the GT, Thruxton and Uzi ranges. It wasn't a decision made by photos, I have actually visited a couple of shops.

Cover_Drive, does the bat pick up fantastically?

I love my redback surefire, which picks up horribly

Ha, Funnily enough that is very similarto me.
I very much like my Surefire, but someone said the other day that it was a bit bottom heavy and i had to agree with him.

Mine is 2lb 8  so not too worried about it.

Dont like that profile at all. As people have said, its all edge. Thruxton profile looks similar too.
Much prefer the GT sort of shape and they pick up extremely well.

Might have been a bit harsh there, its 2lb 8 and it feels 2lb 8 rather than being any lighter is what I meant!

Also Agree about Krakatoa. There are better Newbery bats.
I would guess it is in response to the trend for Asian type profiles, ad i am sure they sell alright

Thanks alot for the positive comments guys. I really appreciate it :D

Dom - As I said I was really impressed with Newbery's quality when I saw my clubmates bats. So when mine came I absolutely stunned which the quality. I would say hard to match Newbery's quality.

stubbzy - Ahh no worries mate. I paid 200 for the bat including postage whereas I also bought Newbery Test gloves which are another 30 pounds.

Tom - Are you saying that would I have purchased this bat again if I had a chance? If so then I would say maybe. The profile and sweetspot does suit me as I like low profiled bats. So because of this fact yes and no because of fact I don't like getting same bats (lol). Basically what made me get Krakatoa was its profile. As I said earlier I tend to like low profiled bats such as GN Powerbow so I chose this one. I am not sure why but when I play any shot most of the time it will bounce of the middle of the bat but low at the bat. I hope it makes sense. If I hadn't purchased Krakatoa (due to some odd reasons) then it would have been GT and maybe (depending on GT's availability) Thruxton.

alexrickyponting - I always wanted a lightest pickup bat. So when I went with Krakatoa I assumed that since it has a low sweetspot then as people say pickup get slightly heavy so it did but by a really small margin.

Ohh yeah it does have a beautiful pick up. To be honest, it picks up better than what I thought. My GN powerbow is 2.7 but to me its pickup looks like 2.10ish with no hesitation. This one seems quite lighter

GJ and steelcouch GT was my second choice :)

Perhaps in future I might buy GT

Played with my Krakatoa today for the first time since I got it and ohh boy it was impressive. I was mainly defending the ball but when I played few stroke the ball went like a gun. The toe is really impressive. I toed one or two balls and it went really fast compare to other bats I have used.

Great bat in terms of playing alongside it's quality.
