Just saw this:
http://www.sidearm-cricket.com/
Looks like one of the things you use to throw tennis balls for dogs!
-
This would be the thing that Watsontotty saw Gooch using at the EDICG!

Yeah that must be in.
Looks interesting, be interested to see how much they charge, bound to be ridiculous!
-
Ok lets guess the price...
Club Sidearm: £40
Pro Sidearm : £100
-
Club: 30
Pro: 50
-
I wouldn't think they would charge that much Leo, be interesting to see how they are perceived
-
You would like to think they'd be less, but you just never know! Some companies rate their products so highly, ala dragons den!
-
I'll go for £34.99 club and £49.99 pro. I think they mentioned a junior version maybe at £29.99.
-
ooo i was close then!
-
thers a video on their site if anyones interested, the third version is an incrediball one
-
no that's my best guess - I don't know honest!
-
whatever it is, it will be very overpriced.
-
I'm really impressed by the product looks great from the vids
-
I think it will be around £30-40.
People need to realise the costs that are involved with setting up a business to sell a product like the Sidearm. £30 quid for an innovative product isn't bad when you consider the time and money this guy will have put in to get it to market, alongside the likely sales numbers he will generate. All things considered, i bet there will be very little mark up.
-
Yeah but consider the cost of an almost identical product for dogs, maybe £10 at most? And it cant be that much different???
-
I agree, the product isn't that different. But when you consider the guy has had to set up a company, website, patent application, design, produce (with much smaller numbers than pets at home i presume), ship (import tax), package, plus tax on top, a lot of that £30 is wittled away.
I've got nothing to do with the sidearm, its just an observation.
-
the real question is: "how much are the dog throwing devices and, if they are cheaper, can the be used with a cricket ball?"
Based on this you can decide whether to shell out for one of the side arm devices.
-
I'm sure that if the dog version can do the trick, then the bloke who is selling this wouldn't have gone to so much trouble to develop it.
-
A colt at my club has his mum come down and throw tennis balls to him in the nets with one of the dog toys versions
-
it says on there website they are both £29.38 but im not entirely sure that that is accurate?
surely the pro would cost more :L
-
it might not simply because the pro is harder to use than the club, it can do more but you need to be stronger and have a bit more skill, its not just that the pro is better if that makes sense :D
-
Ive spoke to the bloke who came up with this and patented them and he was walking about how he wanted to provide and affordable coaching aid!!!! they wont be ridiculous prices.
-
Gone on sale today with the club at £20.99 and the pro at 24.99.
http://www.sidearm-cricket.com/
Dont think the prices are that bad tbh, but cant see why anyone wouldnt pay the extra £4 for the pro though!
-
Can see myself getting a pro
-
well i think the main difference is that it seems to be harder to use the pro, not just that its better
-
i think the club are going to invest in one too roco! just a tad bit cheaper than a bowling machine!
-
£20.99 for club and £25.99 seems quite reasonable!
-
Looks like the pro is easier to use but at 60mph max ish speed not really match practice so better off taking the time to master the pro me thinks
-
had a look at the video and he I reckon he has to put quite a lot into it- do you really think it requires less effort than throw downs? Prob more accurate though.
I emailed him and asked if there was a try before you buy option, that included return postage.
He Still hasn't got back to me though :(

I'm not surprised, I'd laugh and delete the email
-
He probably thought the offer was too good to be true!
Not.
-
well ordered a pro and he mailed me and said it will be here wed/thurs
-
Hope it proves to be a good purchase Roco- some vids of you in action would be awesome once you've got the knack!
-
we dont want to scare the kids on here with vids of me lol but will let you know how it goes
-
just about to order one will come in handy i think a good idea and a good price well done that man
-
I have done the same! ordered a pro. Looks like good fun and a very useful training aid, I can really see the benefits of having one. There is nothing more frustrating when you are batting in the nets against some wayward bowling! It seems once you have mastered the pro you can really test any batsmen out.

what benefits do you reckon? more pace and accuracy, and swing? In the video he gets it to hoop quite nicely....
Wonder if he's working on a spin version...

I think the benefits are pace and accuracy therefore possibly providing better practice. When I bat in nets (not very often) I tend to bat for about 20mins max due to numbers. In the 20mins I spend batting I may face some quality accurate bowling but also may get a lot of part time wayward stuff. So with the new aid I may be able to benefit from a more intense accurate nets session. For £25 worth a punt I think?
-
Has anyone had a go on one of these yet? Our overseas aussie tells me that ''back home maaite coaches use lacrosse sticks, pretty sick to be honest with you maaite!'' sounds tricky but could get some good wheels me thinks!!
-
What model does everyone have? Im thinking of going for a pro
-
Leo, will this increase your T20 average even more?
-
Apparently, can't see how we can get it higher than 100 though!
-
I have the pro going to give it a whirl today with the joker
-
Only just seen this, looks like a good idea. Let us know what you think.
-
Recieved my pro yesterday! seems like it may take some time to get the hang of it.
-
Going to use mine now so will let you know but I had the same thought
-
Anyone got any feedback? Photos? Videos?
quite interested to know before I decide to order one :)
-
Used mine today absolutely awesome one of the best things to come out in a while will definatley be staying in the kit bag
-
Interesting stuff roco- tricky to use? Able to generate good pace? am thinking about investing....
-
I found it easy to use and can generate very good pace it's the sort of thing you just have to get used too even got some seam and swing at times
-
does it require a lot less effort than throw downs? the dude on the site was banging on about 4 england coaches who were injured due to them...
-
Alot less and can be more accurate is harder to adjust length but can keep a great line plus the batsmen gets a more realistic feel than throw downs
-
Cool!
Last question- do you work for sidearm?!
-
No not smart enough for things like that plus wrong country ha
-
Sounds good, especially at the price its at, may have to try one!
i reckon prices will shoot up after a while though!!
-
i reckon prices will shoot up after a while though!!
I agree, that's all the convincing I need. I now need to find 25 spare pounds
-
Yeah if demand increases the price will butt well worth it just got to try and get it swinging when I want it
-
I wonder if you can simulate spin as well?
-
I highly doubt it mate
-
would be difficult, i guess you would need some sort of mechanism to be incorporated into it?
which would probably add a lot to the research, development and production costs, spoiling one of the main attractions of this product
-
Roco do you have the club or pro?
-
I have the pro
-
Roco, is the Sidearm pretty fragile or is it stable? If you get what I mean?!?!
-
Pretty strong I would say as no real small moving parts just one solid piece but you need to treat it right and not abuse it but that's the same with all things
-
Any tips roco? Do you throw normally or adjust your technique?
-
Just throw normally but as for a tip aim for a short ball first and adjust length from there as you can bowl some quick beamers if you try a full ball straight away
-
Do you "flick" your wrist?
-
Kind of but no more than I do with throw downs feels very natural can get it going away but not in yet so need a bit more practice lol
-
nice one! cheers
-
Any one got any pics or videos?
-
plenty of those 2 on their website!
-
its something you just have to try but very much doubt you will be dissapointed
-
Yeah used it properly for the first time, it will take a bit of time getting used to it, but thanks roco for the tips. I found it easier when I started to look at the floor (roughly in the area I wanted it to pitch). First couple of times I threw a beamer and then a inswinging yorker which hit by brothers foot (I think this was because I was looking upwards at the batsman????)
-
Indeed this is the device i watched Goochy use while up at Chester Le Street although his version may have been all the same colour.
-
Ordered mine today can't wait!
-
just bought one aswell
-
same
-
anyone just see K Akmal messing around with one on balcony on test match coverage.
-

Yeah, It's great to see international players have got them aswell
-
It's great used mine today. Not only can you do seam and swing, you are able to do slower balls, leg spin and off spin! It's great. Worth getting one :)
-
New videos on the website, it gives some handy tips aswell.
-
Did anyone see it mentioned in this months AOC? There's a question about it in the interview with Strauss in the bottom left corner of pg41!
-
Used mine for the first time in the nets on the weekend and i was impressed and so were the batsmen. Some even thought it was better than a bowling machine because you can see the arm coming over. Havnt faced it yet myself dont trust anyone else to use it lol.
-
Just found out tonight how to get maximum pace out of the sidearm tonight and made the batsmen jump was fun
-
enlighten us all roco! Share the secret!
-
BOWL kind of defeats the object a little but if you use a bowlers action off a pace or two really comes out with some zip plus moves around in the air
-
Coach has got his hands on one, he bought it too nets today. and i had a quick Arm/throw/chuck hahah!
definitely worth a purchase i would say, difficult to get used to at first (nearly hurt two people Beamers followed by a sorry) and also a few going down the sides of the nets. but this was only on the first few throws. but after a while its really easy to use and pick up straight away.
im still to face the Side-arm but the lads who i was throwing too found it quite realistic, and positive thoughts were expressed after the session was finished.
like i have said I haven't faced the thing yet, but i was a volunteer to try its high/long catching capabilities. and OMG this thing can throw a high and long ball. catches were easily carrying over the full length of the square and at a decent height. definitely would help in that area.
overall a great product, which over the time and given a chance could be absolutely amazing in my opinion. one slight problem is the variations, i tried bowling the slower ball option and the leg spin option both of which didnt work too well. leg spin was bowled too high. but i could see it turning if it would have pitched. and the slower ball only managed to pitch about 5 yards infront of me :/ but im sure they would come easily enough after time.
It's great.
chip :)
p.s roco any tips on the "variations" could you post here or PM me id like to develop my side-arming haha :)
-
like i said try to bowl off a step or two without a jump the extra pace is fun
and just ajudst the release point for in and out swing plus much harder but a flick of the wrist gives it a bit of spin/cut
-
i will try it haha,
i got a bit of swing but not a lot, but it was a first time use im sure it will get better with use. but i think i got the leg spin didnt have much time to try the off spin but cant see it working :S might be something im doing, it will probably work itself out
thanks chip :)
-
What kind of pace have those who have them been able to produce with this? 70mph+?
-
Have not measured the pace but very sharp with the bowling technique I would think quicker than 70mph but can't be sure
-
"Very Sharp" is quick enough for me. I think one of these will be on my christmas list.
Thanks roco.
-
Just make sure you get the pro version as is worth it
-
In my opinion, the pro is quick enough to need to sightscreen/or some white background
-
That's cheating can't make it easy ( unless I'm batting )
-
That's cheating can't make it easy ( unless I'm batting )
Probs the quickest stuff i've faced when someone has been using the sidearm against me.
-
It's up there but if I am facing some quicks in the next match will get mate to use it from 18 yards try it it's fun
-
Have you seen the Gooch vids on their website. He is soo pro and makes it look easy
I love all the different variations hes got...
I am really hoping that with a bit of practice batting against the sidearm, it will help push me up the order a bit. :)
-
The slower ball on the Sidearm is great =)
-
I enjoy facing the quicker deliveries from the sidearm, although my cousin's got a pretty consistent line with it, it's far too wide for me to bother chasing and my brother's technique when using it is awful.
-
Looks like an awesome training aid.
Does anybody know what the differences between to the two models are? Besides the pricing and colour of course!
Been two months + since the last post, how is everybody getting on with it? Has it helped you improve any areas in particular?
-
I think the club handles a speed up to 50/60mph, the pro goes to 80/90 mph, I think the pro offers more swing than the club,
-
The pro one's stiffer, so it can get up to 80mph.
-
I asked my auntie for one of these for christmas and wanted the pro one. Went round there the other night it was there. Too my disappointment it's the club version, not to sound ungrateful but I might send it back and get the pro one after Christmas
-
well, for my sidearm I usually choice the USP Compact in 9mm, but these look interesting too :P . Look awesome in fact- might get one in Feb. :)
