Title: First bat making attempt
Post by: raymond.2 on June 25, 2010, 03:10:51 PM
Got a drawknife, a spokeshave and a couple of kashmir clefts, one was absolute crap and impossible to work with.

The other cleft was alright to work with, the wood was hard compared to and old english willow bat i hacked about with for practice.

Im fairly happy with how its turned out, a reasonable profile with fairly good sized edges. Balance and pick up are dreadful, it weighs 2.8 and picks up like a 2.12.... so it wont be popular on here! Couldnt really get much concaving with the spokeshave, dont know if its the right type... but will now look for a travisher. The face of the bat is very flat, i wasnt sure how to get the slightly convex shape you normally get with bats.

And comments greatly appreciated.

Good for first effort, kashmir is horrible to work with!

If you want to add some concaving I have an Atherton And Snell Leather Shave that I'm selling? Its what Fusion use to do concaving and I found it really good.

Also got a G1/2 part made that you could have a go at?

Yer its not particularly nice is it, seems to always get snagged. Fancy swapping that tool for my middling bat, how much are they worth?

May take you up on that part made, need to generate some funds first though mate.

Thats top work. Might be worth getting a plane, really useful. Or if you turn the drawknife up the other way it acts as a plane sort of blade.

Ok then, think my dad has a few lying around.

What do you use the pane for, more precise shaping?

yeh to makes the edges into a smooth flowing line, my 1st effort turned out alot like yours and its hard getting to grips with having the edges even and without any differences in thickness between them...looks good though!
