Title: Bit of bat info wanted!
Post by: peplow on July 15, 2010, 04:31:51 PM
Guys,

Clearing out a few places in time off for bit of cash and got given a stuart surridge rapid drive (or driver cant remember which sat here right now) by one of my dads mates who was a decent cricketer. Was given it himself by a county batsman on the day he retired apparently, this has been backed up by several people who were there with him, doing some more research to find out who! This was 25ish years ago apparently. Has sort of engraved or inked writing on it which say stuart surridge and model etc etc. Grains looked like they were lovely back in the day! Has a lamitoe or just an insert in toe (not sure what lamitoe is!) Wondering if anyone knew anything about it and if it was worth anything as collectors item or should i just keep it!?

Says Stuart surridge Rapid Driver

Perfect below which may be model grading?

Then on back it says extra special,

It also has two branding images on it and "patented toe technology"

If it looks like that, then I'd say it's considerably more than 25 years old. A bat from 25 years ago would have vinyl stickers and be much more colourful. I'd say it's more likely to be a 1950s or 1960s bat. One clue is the address; at some point they moved from London to Witham in Essex.

Lamitoe is a laminated toe. A slot is cut in the toe of the bat, parallel to the face, and a thin sheet of wood is then glued into this slot, to strengthen the toe area.
