Title: Best catch you've ever taken?
Post by: johan95 on September 25, 2010, 07:56:47 PM
Hey guys,

I took 2 great catches today, one blinder and another good one. I'm wondering what the best catch is that you've ever taken???

My first today was when the batsman leading edged it over my head, and I had to run back 20 metres and take the catch over my shoulder.

My second was at square cover, a short ball was bowled, and the batsman smashed it over my head, and I jumped up and caught it one-handed with my left paw. BLINDER!

Any good catches you've taken, would be interested to know...!

standing at wide mid-off, running diving catch off a top edged pull to wide mid-on, about 25 yards of running, quality catch! also taken a couple of good ones running in the deep, couple of good'uns at backward point as well. considering i used to be a right panesar in the field i've improved tenfold!

God! This is gunna be some serious brain draining thinking!

One that I can remember from this season. Fielding at say 2/3 slip for my mate how can bowl 80+. But wasn't this day. The guy edged it and i dived to my left and caught it with both hands. With a little roll! It was one of those catches that goes in so well, even though it was travelling i didn't feel it at all!

nd one from our 6 a side, fielding at mid off. The guy absolutely drilled it to my left at shoulder height. I got my hands up and had to dive for it. I caught it, my elbows hit the floor and i fumbled it but managed to catch it again!

Chatting up some bikini clad girls eh. I bet your a stud at 14/15!

Also adding in that your were playing for county under 11's when you were under 9's

It little bits like this that annoys the genuine members, some little cocky kid.

i am just saying, i'm not really annoyed just trying to open your eyes to a couple things!

You can be yourself on this forum, you don't need to impress anyone.

Sorry if my comments were taken the wrong way and caused offence

Being 14 and just moved to a new school makes you want to impress people so sorry for that. No doubt I'll look back on this ruefully with a smile and see how wrong my former self was.

Every catch I take Is my best catch. I field at slip and gully. So when they stick it's worth it's weight in gold

I hope you do mate, its the only way people will learn. By it being pointed out to them.

Another note, sarcasm isn't always the easiest to spot over the internet. Try and tone it down!

A couple spring to mind.

Caught + bowled Luke List had hit 150 off 30 overs drove ball back straight one handed head height , umpire thanked me as he wouldn't have got out of the way.

2nd slip jumped up at full stretch one handed plucked it out of the air.

Extra cover ball driven still rising jumped up one handed at full stretch

My best catch was when I was playing last season, the opponents had a burly opener who had one of the biggest swings I have seen. He got right underneath one which managed to reach me at mid off.

Not a difficult catch in terms of distance covered, but the height on this one made it one of my better catches! Didn't help when I hear my West Indian overseas player laughing before I caught it. Would love to have known the 'air-time' on that one!

Yeah high catches are difficult...

Halfway back at Mid-on, the batsman clubs it high in closing overs of 40 over match and I chase towards the boundary, going down a slight hill. Stick my left hand straight up, leap a bit with the ball over my shoulder and it stuck. Batsman didn't see me take it so when the umpire gave him out he couldn't believe it.The look on his face was a classic. That's a good few years back now though.

I took one once at home against our "local rivals" when i was about 15, big guy smashed it towards our pavilion (hes on 48)  iv run a 20 yards round the boundary from deep min on and taken it diving full stretch one handed to stop the 6, he  hears people clapping and shouting thinks hes hit the 6 looks really happy with himself and raises the bat, then it slowly dawns on him that the kid theyv stuck on the boundrys caught him ....... priceless my top cricket moment (considering im 19 now its abit sad lol)

the distance i ran round the boundary does tend to be exaggerated.......by some .......of corse i would never myself   :-[

I have seen some awesome catches by team mates this year!

And one by an opposition keeper. My friend flashed at a wide one and thought he got lucky and got it through 1st and 2nd slip. the keeper pulled out a full stretch reaction dive. My mate was gutted.

It is always gutting as a batsmen!

second over of a match this year, i had taken 10 off the first 5 balls. Went for a cut shot, nailed it. But....

a friend of mine at point full length jump with full arm read jumped up and plucked it from the air. Not happy!!!!

Another one, played in a tour match against a colt team. They had 2 players, one a left arm bowler and one a right arm bowler. they both had  busted hands, their non bowling one. So they opened the bowling then went of and didnt bat.

Anyway. i skied one and saw one of the guys with the bad hand under and though, 'i'm safe'. he caught it one handed! And then again, we played a 10-10 match after and he did it again to me on the boundary.

I was so annoyed!!

I stood in as keeper in the last league game I played, in the the 2nd over a guy nicked one to first slip but I instinctively dived at took it one-handed in front of his face, although the ball was travelling slowly...

Then about 20 overs later I took another similar catch, but it was from a quicker bowler and was probably inbetween 1 and 2nd slip.. definately the best I have taken.

The best catch I have ever seen was Arul Suppiah at Taunton about 4 years ago against Surrey. Ali Brown whacked one low to his left at Mid-on, and he ran about 5 metres with a full-length dive, taking it about 30cm's off the ground! In my opinion it was better than Collingwood's to remove Hayden in 2005.....

Best as a keeper was to a left hand bat right arm over bowler bat went to cut so I moved to my left then he inside edges it and I had to dive the opposite way but still took the catch plus took one in slips a few years back that went to 3rd and I was at 1st but dived one handed to take it

Mine was similar to this AB catch not saying it was as good but my best : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJioc7bUYIY
Standing at leg slip to an off spinner batsman tried to flick it and my hand went down and clung on and for a sizeable guy like me to get down there was amazing

Best catch i have seen was a team mate fielding on the boundary run about 20 yards and take it at a full stretch dive take the catch but also punch him self in the face :P

Best catch I've taken was last season, I ran in a bit far from long on and realised the ball was going over my head, managed to back peddle and jump as high as I could taking the ball one handed....I have a pretty safe pair of hands normally but I still don't know how I caught it.

I don't have a best catch but a few that stand out:

1) First catch at gully  for our 1st team, diving low to my right and catching it cleanly one handed, to dismiss their form batsman.

2)  Catch at first slip, which should have been the keepers, that went low to my left, again very clean catch.

3) Running back 20 yards and taking a tumbling catch from cover, that had been skied with typical Aussie style method.

4) First ever catch from a spinner at first slip, didnt expect it as he went for the cut but went nicely at about head high and pouched it nicely.

Also taking a catch of the medium pacer down the legside is a very good feeling when I keep.....

Fielding second slip, thick edge to third slip from a 80mph bowler, palmed it to the floor, where i got a boot to it and tee'd it up about 4 foot in front of me where i full length dived to catch it between my pinky and fore finger !

Still lost, but made my day.

also, i dont keep, so had to stand in keeper in my first ever county game, never done it before,

this was in 06 when we had the dry summer, were playing in norfolk, 3 and a half hour drive, rock hard wicket, our pace bowler comes on, he was quick for our standards, bloke drives at it, inside edge down legside, ive just thrown my body at it and lunged out a left mit, and somehow it stuck,

we still have a laugh about it now whenever my fielding comes under scrutiny,

also formed one of my best friendships with the pace bowler :)

so all good :D

took one in a midweek league game, just behind square on the leg side, the batsmen mooses it off a full toss straight at me i never saw it and somehow managed to take a diving catch haha.

the next a week later, fielding deep midwicket, and its one of them games where you have to score your on team cuz its a midweek league, so the other team asking me the name all of sudden i hear my named shouted and the ball comes flying towards me, thought was at first, i should at least make an effort and not bottle it, came charging in and somehow caught it on my arm and chest like, the inside of my elbow if you get me, like rocking a baby haha :)

ive taken some screamers and dropped some sitters in my time! The one catch that stands out is a full lengh dive at mid wicket to take an absolute bullet during an under 15s game, you get such a buzz from taking the special ones!

Ive taken some nice ones this year, but the best Ive seen was from an opponent... who only had one arm!

The ball was struck solidly to the side of his disability yet he leapt, contorted his body so his back was facing the batsmen and caught the ball like it was the easiest thing he'd ever done. It was the most incredible catch Ive ever seen and proof, if it was needed, that cricket is for all types. His batting wasnt bad either, though I wondered about the rules if we had caught him off of the prosthetic attachment he used as the "top hand".
