Title: Cricket Bat World Cup 2010
Post by: Talisman on October 04, 2010, 03:24:08 PM
Since we are all a little sad at the end of the UK season I thought it might be fun and informative to have a random Cricket bat WC event. I've put some big brands and also some forum sponsors in a 32 bat draw and we will vote on one contest per day with the winner going through to the next round until we have the semi finals which will be 3 day voting period and the final which will be a 5 day voting period.

You are only allowed to vote once per match, and only post the brand name you would like to win, all other posts will be deleted and you will have to buy Fattus Cattus his daily cakes as a fine.

The full draw is as follows,

1, Gray Nicolls
v                        Gray Nicolls,
2, Vantage,
                          v                       Gray Nicolls

No problem, not after cast iron proof of anything.

The round will go on until the following day at midnight, so roughly 30 hours voting on each round.

Newbs Series 1?Mjolnir? I'd say they were pretty iconic in terms of every schoolboy growing up in the 90's either owning or wanting one.

Dave, got something right up your street. Jimmy Cook's 3lb Magnum !! too heavy for you but will try and get some pics for you. Its in my in-laws loft and it is an absolute railway sleeper of a bat.

Will ask them if I can borrow it.

series one or mjolnir were indeed up there but not in the same fame as the df magnums

Yea met him a few times years ago when he was playing for Somerset. Just imagine how many runs he would have scored if SA where playing during his time. Scored hundreds at will. Will see what I can do.

Yea Barry Richards, Graeme Pollock and Jimmy Cook, unbelievable players who unfortunately only played a handfull of test matches. Just look at their first class stats.

Jimmy Cook hit over 7500 runs in 3 seasons at Somerset including 28 hundreds !!!!

Yea, just lloking at thier stats in Cric info now. Graeme Pollock had the best record av over 60 in the 20odd tests he played. Don Bradman said he was the best batsman he had ever seen......quite good then !!

Yeah you have to look at stats to a certain extent but slightly before me so take yours and the old mans word for it as best I have seen is either sachin or my favourite viv the destroyer never seen someone take apart top quality pace bowling consistently
Title: Re: Cricket Bat World Cup 2010
Post by: Bulldog Cricket on October 11, 2010, 06:53:27 PM
Oh yea, now IVA.....my favourite by a mile. Jimmy Cook was a run machine but in the Hick/Gooch mold (but better) just churned runs out but perhaps not the most attractive.

IVA did everything with style. Different class.

To be fair, every Fearnley I have ever used has been a bit of a plank, whilst the Newbery's have just gone. And I grew up while Hick was using one, never understanding how it scored so many runs. May have been the difference in batsman quality though...

I'm fearing it will extend into next year's season @ 2 days per match.
Title: Re: Cricket Bat World Cup 2010

16 first round matches at 1 day each,
8 second round matches at 1 day each
4 quarter finals at 1 day each
2 semi finals at 3 days each
1 final at 5 days.

39 days in total, 9 gone already so about a month to go. If the season is starting in mid November I better get a new jumper or 2....

will there be a 3rd and 4th play off? the typical non-event of the world cup leading up to the final, but usually a better match than the final!!

I notice that you could have a situation in the next round where you have Hawk vs Adidas - which are essentially the same bats with different stickers on. I appreciate that this isn't the only situation when this could happen - are we supposed to vote on which stickers we like in that case?! ???

Yeah i appareciate that but he doesnt like selling them on as ayrteks, he does do a good job though in all fairness to him, after frankie its been full steam ahead. I'll judge it on his bats then :D, although i ma fond of his stickers anyway with all choices of colour and personalisation.

Here we go again. Hunts County about to get mullered by H4L in the CBWC, despite having come up with some very innovative bats (Modulus and original Reflex) and also some absolute belters (my various Insignias, + mate's Mettle). So much for people knowing the brands we haev in the country!

I guess the Mark Butcher "This bat's brilliant" has more impact for H4L than ever! Owning both, but not yet having used the H4L, I'll reserve judgement!)

I don't disagree. If you've used both brands it is, otherwise, as Talisman says, it's a popularity contest. That's what makes it frustrating and interesting in equal measure.

I wonder how many people have used half the bats that get votes?
Title: Re: Cricket Bat World Cup 2010
Post by: uknsaunders on October 26, 2010, 09:06:02 AM
agree with tim2000, most of the forum have no idea just how good some of the older bats were. the reflex was the bat to have in the early nineties. its all about the last 3 years and reviews on this forum. I have no problem with it on that basis.
Title: Re: Cricket Bat World Cup 2010
Post by: Buzz on October 26, 2010, 09:06:21 AM
I agree I think this is harsh on Hunts - they don't have the branding that H4L has, the fact that they made the woodworm bats and make some of the Mongoose bats people seem to forget. I also think that the County bats suffer as they make so many cheap bats for kids

I am sure that Matt's bats are fantastic, but having used 5 or 6 hunts bats, they are wonderful. They were my bat maker of choice for 10 years, which says something for me.
Title: Re: Cricket Bat World Cup 2010
Post by: roco on October 26, 2010, 09:10:01 AM
Well had my first proper bat in 94/95 and was a slazenger so will take your word for it as the hunts I have used (including woodworm) were not that great may have been unlucky will never know but very few brands in the list I have not used tbh

The thing I remember about the Reflex was its huge profile. It was a big bat.

This is the only one I've voted on, as it's the only one where I have used both brands fairly recently. Owned and used a few Hunts (including Modulos, Reflex etc), but my 666 is a fantastic bat, the best I've had.

Same as roco, doing it by my own experiences. Hunts are getting a bit of harsh treatment, they don't advertise, and they don't get as much publicity, but they make some quality bats! not doubting that matt doesn't, just seems a bit unjust, that's all!

Going firstly on what I have used, secondly on what I have seen others using, thirdly on what I would choose to buy given the choice of the two.  It's a bit of fun, so I am voting on them all.  I'm sure not many folks out there have personal experience of more than a few brands.

I agree I think this is harsh on Hunts - they don't have the branding that H4L has, the fact that they made the woodworm bats and make some of the Mongoose bats people seem to forget.

My old man knows the rep for albion and incredible cricket co. and told me that hunts make their bats too- wasn't 100 percent though. Have used a couple and they were ok, though had little to choose from. Were great value though as got them for (No Swearing Please) all!
Won't be getting one again mind getting a newb off the talisman- feels better to pay for our own bat.

shame hunts are going out by the looks of it! cant wait to get another custom off them in the next couple of weeks! hope they've improved the stickers though.... they're not as classy as i would like.

as for voting i simply have voted for the brand i would choose if offered the best bat possible from each (if that makes sense?!)

Jimba - if you are getting a custom Hunts and want some classy stickers - see if they have any Caerulex stickers like these, oldies but I love them, they remain my fav bat stickers:

The one in decent contition is 14 years old (scored my highest ever score with it though), the knackered one is about 7 years old, I have another I got when I was 16 which was also seriously special.

Hunts make a tiny percentage of the bats they sell, I have used their offerings when they were a major brand, I too love the Reflex and also the Insignia, they were the most popular bats in the 90's in my leagues. Having said all that I did buy a custom from Tony this summer and even though it was a complete privilege to speak to him the bat was poorly finished and shaped but he was a gentleman and did the bat for a great price.

The idea without getting too deep is simply you can have a bat, any bat, from either of the brands in the World Cup Game, which would you choose? Some might go for one they have not tried, some may go with their preferred brand, some might get reminiscent, it matters not too me, simply which would you prefer. That way you can vote without having tried the brands, surely the inclusion in the positive, it would be a bloody boring game if it were purely on use of both brands.

I must admit that I voted on experience. I have had a Clipper LE which was a great bat, and indeed I still have an Insignia LE which is also quality willow.
It was a tough choice, but the bats I examined from H4L last week were beaties, both willow and balance, and the pick up was gorgeous. That together with the 30 grainer Excel I have tipped the scales in favour of H4L for me.

I must admit that it's reasonably easy at the mo, as I have experienced a high proportion of the bats in this bat world cup. But it will be tougher later when the top notch brands are against each other!!!  :(
For me personally, there will be some really tough choices!

I've been surprised as to how many I've actually used. I think I've used 26 of the 32 brands (either owned or borrowed someone elses and used in nets). Makes it interesting when you get to the higher rounds though...

GJ - this net took place in my mates barn - where he has a bowling machine, Canners asked if I could help him with a few things.  Typically it is a case of find out who lives in your general vacinity and ask people if they want a net.

I'm also quite surprised-knowing Blackcat are very fussy over their clefts, saying that i guess more people have had positive experiences with H4L...... H4L bats do look very good bats so i knew it could go either way.....

i'd be happy with either tbh

I was suprised Talisman beat Laver and GM beat Warsop. And I expected H4L and BC to be very close.

There are some interesting results, although of course it is a bit of fun and people probably would vote differently with their money.

I think it also shows how key hype is on the forum, we're all as affected by fashion as the mass market. Just we tend to go for what respected members reccomend rather than respected players.

Respected players are bought Tom, you should know that, they will recommend using a stick of celery is the price is right. I'd never take the word of a player, but I would take their bats.... You know quite a few will not practice what they preach.

i thought that Newbery had something to do with both the talisman bats , and the black cats , i voted for all 3 as i think there all quality - my bats also stickered talisman and i love it (and he only deemed it worthy of storm cloud stickers) - which is why he got my vote - along with the fact iv never hear of a bad one , where as i have owned a mongoose that didnt perform as i expected for the price - i voted based on what i know from experience and what other people seem to think ........... nothing to do with mikes opinion on things , it just happens his bats are very good

Best I heard about viv was off micheal holding who said viv would hold every batting record going but he got to a hundred (usually quickly) then got bored would love to get bored smashing lillie and Thompson about ludicrous simply ludicrous

...except that it never really happened.

In 1975/76, when Lillee and Thomson were in full cry, Viv was reduced to mere mortality like the rest of the star studded West Indian batting line up.

When Viv played for Queensland:

This is pretty illuminating too...Viv and Clive both have their say:

Having said all that, Viv, Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge and Roy Fredricks were an unbelievable batting line up...simply unreal.

Liilie from what I have seen is in my top 5 quicks plus that was when thomo was at his quickest before the injury which from what I have heard he is rated as the quickest ever?

But it's great viewing top quality bowling against top quality batting just a shame for aus as that series gave Clive llyod the idea to play an all out pace attack and batsmen suffered for years to come thanks Australia ha
