Title: Bat Branding
Post by: tim2000s on October 07, 2010, 08:21:13 AM
Looking at the way different companies brand their bats, which do you prefer? For me, I think the Newbery "Weapon" approach was a classic...

Mjolnir, or Thor's Hammer
Uzi and Navarone, or well known guns
B-52, or heavy bomber

Well we always say that a Newbery "goes like a gun"....

I like newbery's sps, players, 5* models more. However i think puma's names and numbers make it very clear too.

Motorbike racing in the Isle of Man like Mike said, and you were right with the Tourist Trophy :)

Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. It's also been known to mean Time Trial in other racing sports.

Does the BMF sticker on the back of the Uzi's really stand for what I think it stands for?! Also what does SPS stand for?

Interesting thread, really made me have a think. Over the years I guess Ihave always favoured the more classic branding, Newbery, Salix etc.

Still true, but consider two of this forum's bat makers. SAF and H4L. The branding couldn't be more different. One bright, colourful, in your face. The other simple, classy, smart. Totally different but they both work brilliantly. I think those two makers currently represent the most eye catching branding available. So it shows you can go down either route and as long as you get it right, it doesn't matter which you choose.

GM have had a very random approach over the years with no real set semantic field.

Cannon, Icon, Purist, Maxi, Diamond, Imperial, Flare, Luna, Apex, Hero, Radius, Maestro, Duellist, Catalyst, Skipper... i could go on (GM freak here)

Maths: Radius, Apex
Science: Catalyst, Flare, Luna, possibly diamond

Cant see where the others fit in mind you!

They are not adjectives, they are nouns! Purest would be an adjective; the superlative form of pure.

Id love to see them go back to basics where they offer *****  **** *** ** * for there bats, 5 star being the very best and going down from there. Possibly a bit old fashioned but it once worked well in my opinion.

Id like to see a leading maker speak to there top sponsored player and make an exact replica of there bat in terms of shape profile pick up weight etc etc even if its not a bat from there own range if that makes sense but at least offer something that resembles the pros bat.

sort of like the af puma bat, but possibly more detailed..

I do like that idea about the pro bats mate, however it would be hard for a company to pick a top sponsored player, GM would be tough with Smith, Trott, Watson etc... Gray Nics would also be hard with Strauss, Cook, Chanderpaul etc... Kookaburra would be Ponting though. Puma would probably be Kieswetter or North. Slazenger would be tough between Clarke and Colly.

Kallis for Slaz?

Think it would be pretty simple bud all they have to do is pick there top sponsored player and make an exact replica of the bat, GM could do say 3 as could as could some of the others. Would be nice to see exact replicas of the top players on the market available on general sale. Saying that I'm pretty sure they would want to charge the earth fr it.

Yeah good point mate, I had the idea of just the one player from each brand in my book. GM could certainly do it with their CNC machine.

GM could do Flare - Watson, Icon - Trott and Apex - Smith

There's a huge hoo-hah on here about pro bats, realistically lots of pros just make do with the best of the shop bats. I often give our upcoming pros reject shop bats.
