Title: Your worst/most embarassing on-field moments
Post by: Lefthook on October 13, 2010, 12:02:37 PM
Cough up and tell, the day that you went through hell!

I've had 3 first ball ducks as an opener. In one of the games I managed to get a first-ball duck, and then drop two catches off the same batsman. That guy scored 90 or so, and won it for them. My worst game ever.

I've bowled a 14 ball over, though it did include a wicket. Believe me, it is no consolation.

I managed to get run-out on 49 once because I pulled my back mid-way through - the opposition players had to carry me off to the pavillion as I couldn't move out of the foetal position ... then everybody left me at the club, and I couldn't even move. Someone called the ambulance for me and a crowd of local yobs came along to watch my embarassing ascent into the ambulance.

Many many more, but I'll share those later ...

Yours?

hahaha that's hilarious.

On a serious note that sounds like a stinker.

Erm probs most embarrassing incident last year was trying to pick up and throw to run an opposing batsman out i ended up having to slide then when trying to throw the ball i got in a terrible body position and ended up lobbing the ball ten foot in the air and landing on my face, if that wasn't bad enough the ball then landed on the back of my head whilst i was lay there looking sheepish.

I paid a hell of a fine for that one lol.

Standing in the middle batting, then suddenly jumping in the air, stoping the bowler inm his tracks as I got stung. Then proceeding to pull my trousers down around my knees to chase the wasp that had somehow got in away. Boy did the opposition laugh....

On the "It shouldn't happen on a cricket field" note, a member of the opposition (different game) pulled the ball and twisted about his knee. His knee rotated through 90 xdegrees leaving his foot pointing up the wicket and his thigh towards the direction of the shot. He fell over, we got a stretcher out to him (there was one in the pavilion) and then started to carry him off. Unbeknownst to us, the stretcher was a little old and the material rotten. We'd got halfway to the boundary when it tore and we had a guy who couldn't walk and get up, stuck in the middle of the stretcher with his legs in the air, and the stretcher bearers (our side) trying desperately not to laugh too loudly....

I'm guessing you scored a lot of runs that day. Surely no bowler could concentrate on their delivery after that! Hah!

Jdask - that's pretty funny. Rarely see that kind of thing happen, but when it does, it is incredibly funny.

I had a stinker this year at one of our home league games. Didn't get any with the bat (recurring theme this season) and I'm known for being a bit gobby in the covers so when a lad came out who had been giving me some hip earlier on I thought I'd really go for it! Practically sledged the lad everyball, he was all edges and eyes closed to our quick so I enjoyed that. Anyway on comes the spinner and me with safe hands drops to deep square for the batters well known lofted sweep. Needless to say I dropped him.... And then dropped him again.... And again! All in the same place, all absolute dollies and all off the one bowler, and all infront of the opposition batsmen waiting to come in  :( apparently when the 3rd went up the batter laughed and the field heard my cry of 'ohh for f**k sake'!! Safe to say the worst day I've had in the field. Not bad to say that's all I get picked for!! Haha

I feel for you. Getting smacked around the park is one thing, and getting out for a low score too.

But dropping a catch (or three!) is one of the worst feelings to exist in any sport known to man. When that ball flies up in the air, you can feel the collective gaze of spectators, team mates and opposition, boring a hole into your back.

when making a guest appearance for a club around our area (getting dragged in as they only had 10 payers with borrow kit and my trainers on a wet outfield) I smashed one of their clubhouse windows when batting......which was followed up by chasing down a ball and not being able to stop before the old wooden fench when fielding...going into a power slide in my trainers and attempting to vault the fence only to knock off the top piece of wood, oh and it went for 4!

needless to say i havent been asked back since lol

The worst part is the wooooooooooooooooooo when the ball goes up and then waaaaahhhheeeeyyyyyy when it goes through the grabbers. The head goes down and you daren't look at the spectators, or the bowler, or anyone after dropping 3!!

Usually the reason I'm in the catching zones. Out you go lad you've got safe hands. Then when one goes down it's even worse because everyones celebrating while the balls still travelling haha. Then again I had one this year that was funny. I giggled a dolly Into my hands and didn't realise I was laughing really loud until the batter gave me some jip for it. Cue an immediate send off! Haha I'm awful

Who's that for Tom

Mine's probably turning up for a 1st XI game drunk, then falling asleep 10 minutes before the games started.

Took two catches though including a diving catch at point 3rd ball of the game after being moved from square leg so I didn't throw up on the umpire. That was a bad day. We won though :)

Not too many on my behalf, my worst, hwich isnt even that bad, is running around the boundary lining up a catch in last over of 1st innings, completely lost it in the sun and ducked for cover! being the expert fielder i am i had ducked directly in line with the ball despite being blind to it and it corked my on the back of my head! Felt like i'd been shot! However i saved a boundary and becuase of my football dramatics the batsmen ran none and it wasnt called dead ball! good times but not really if you get me ;)

Pep that's a YBF nominee. £250 if caught that on camera  :D
I've not been drunk to a match but i opened with a lad at our club who was still drunk from the night before. He'd gotten home after 10 and then came out to bat stinking of booze, face like tomato, sweating like mad and wobbling all over. Still managed to put on a partnership of 130 for first wicket and he banged 60 odd. Good job we were playing bottom of league. he was half asleep, completely trollied and seeing 4 balls for most of his innings. haha. I'll not forget that one.

This doesn't really count as on the field but it was on the way to a match. I got absolutely smashed on my 18th birthday and turned up for a 2 hour away trip still drunk..... I had to stop the minibus halfway as I needed to vomit, got out of the door and apparantly ran as fast as I could into the side of an industrial building.... I remember waking up in an ambulance on the way to hospital and missed the rest of the season because of a broken ankle!

On the field, getting to 50 odd before getting hit on the foot by a yorker that broke my toe... Calling for a runner and getting run-out due to a massive mix-up after scoring just 7 more runs..... Bad times!

had some moments in my time but the one that sticks out is the last game of 2010 season where i had a bad day!

had just retrieved a classy square cut from the point boundary and attempted to underarm it in to the bowler... sounds pretty standard so far. however, hung on to it a fraction too long and chucked it straight over my own head over a wall behind me, it took a good 5 minutes to get the ball back and im still taking abuse for it to this day. in the same game i bowled 4 overs for 33 and got naff all runs on the best track i'd seen all season... deffo ready for a few months off after that!

Been there Si, done that, I was the Timberland legend for years for hitting the tree behind me with the ball! Mine's a combined thing, I have a bogey ground for catches, in 3 games there I've dropped 10 catches! Normally a fairly safe pair of hands, had an absolute mare more than once at that ground!

tumo - that is timbo legend, can you find the match report from that game?! "unidentified player throwing the ball over the rope for 4 to end the game" from what i remember! quality - difference being mine had already gone for four haha

oh, and another one here from 2010

i was playing against some local rivals who i know very well and they were giving me loads of abuse - as you do when you know the oppo. anyway - i was really struggling as it was a horrible, cloudy day and it made their mediocre opening bowlers look like walsh and ambrose - getting swing/seam/bounce etc.

i got a poor lbw decision and was sent off accordingly, greeted by the crowd back at the pavillion i was getting heaps of stick from my teammates and others present, so in the heat of the moment (considering the conditions and how hard it was to bat that particular day) i quipped 'why dont you all take the piss out of my when every other c**t gets a hundred out there!'

i sat and watched as the number 3 and 4 batsmen made scores of 98 and 120 with a red face and a broken heart! :)

all good fun tho - i will never be allowed to forget about that!

First game we played on our tour of Jamaica, against the worst team in the Jamaican 40 over tournament, the opening bowler runs in and unleashes a Harmison. Second ball, he does the same. Two balls, two wides to 1st slip. Before he gets to bowl the third ball, the batsman takes his helmet off, shouts to the boundary "I don't need this, bring me my cap".

When we were playing our last game in Jamaica, the oppo batsman (who incidentally plays for the WI U19 team) hit a huge six. One of our guys went to get the ball, and then tried to throw it in from the boundary. He let go of the ball behind him and threw it backwards. Second attempt, to be safe, he threw it underarm, forgot to let go and chucked it behind him again. Third attempt, he rolled it safely along the ground. We don't let him forget it.

I had a stinker this year - in a low scoring game we had the opposition 80-8 chasing 110. There opening bat was still at the crease with about 30-odd, but he was very much having to rotate the strike to protect the guy at the other end. He made his first mistake of his innings giving me an absolute dolly catch at square leg - I made a complete mess of it - didn't exactly drop it cos I didn't put my hands in the right place, and pretty much completely missed it. Said batsmen then went on a pinch hitting rampage and had the game won for them inside the next 4-5 overs, carrying his bat for 50-odd.

never felt so low on a cricket pitch before, having literally dropped the game. Worse thing was I was staying out in that village after the game, so whilst my team mates all went home, I was on the beers in all the same pubs as the opposition.

Dropped a dolly at point in a T20 game, the Jamaican player (cant remeber his name, but has played in the Stanford series) was on 20 at the time but went on to get 100 not out. We still chased down 170 to win though, I got 54* off just 31. I was relieved to say the least.

I was opening the batting in a Saturday league game against a team who are the landlords for the team I play for on Sundays, and for whom I have turned out on a couple of occasions.

2nd over of the game, still on 0, the ball brushes my hip and heads down fine past the keeper.  It should be an easy two leg byes, but just after I have turned for the second run, I absolutely stack it and end up spreadeagled in the middle of the pitch.  Thinking I have no chance of making my ground I don't rush to get up, but they throw to the bowler's end and a flicker of hope is raised.  I scramble up, but in the process my cap falls off.  Instead of leaving it where it is and sprinting to make my ground, for some bizarre reason I turn back to retrieve my cap before trying to make my ground, only to be run out by a yard or two.

So embarassing, and unfortunately I am reminded of it everywhere I go.

Haha! You picked up your cap. That's priceless!!! What do they call you now - Indiana Jones?

During a cup quarter final, we sledged the (No Swearing Please) out of their No. 6 who was barely 5'5" with an over-sized helmet, and the voice of a 3 year old. His pads were too big, and he looked SO scared!

We were clearly well into their exceptionally long tail, and they needed well over a 100 to win at about 7 and over. He missed every ball he played at for the first five or six ...

We wanted Bilbo Baggins out of there! Spirits were up, and we were surely romping home to an easy victo ...

Did he just square cut our quickest bowler for a four? Luck!
Ah, so he did it once more. Pure luck. No need to worry!
Third time ... um, luck?

We decided, in our unbridled arrogance, that he only had the one shot. We'd contain him - lets move a couple of men squarer.

And then he unfurled two of the sweetest cover drives I ever saw! We took a man out of the leg side and fortified the covers a bit more!

He moved across and flicked us mercilessely to mid wicked, and just when you thought it couldn't get worse, he ran down the track out our only "quick" and slammed him for a one bounce four right over his head.

It was sheer fortune that he was caught out before he got beyond fifty - a good catch on the boundary. Turns out he played for the university, though I don't know if he got his blue at lords ...

That's the day we learned our lesson - in cricket, looks don't mean anything. Never underestimate a batsman. You will rue it.

My most embarrassing moment has to be walking out onto the pitch, batting at number 3, going to take guard and then realising that I had forgotten my bat. I'm just glad I had my helmet to cover my red face on as I swiftly walked back to the pavilion. Very embarrassing.

Last 3 overs of a 40 over game and im asked to bowl my first over to a bloke who was on 132 and running riot.Tried to talk the skip out of it but was told just crack on amidst the other players pissing themselves. First 2 balls were hit for 6 and the 3rd for 4. Next ball I bowled him middle stump and he missed out on 150. In my excitement I pulled down my trousers and flashed my middle stump at the  batsman who was still wondering what happened. The umpire said that in 20 years he had never seen such a blatant act of gross misconduct on a cricket pitch.I did apologise.....eventually

WOW! That is most definitely the most daring celebration imaginable.

I bowled a very good player out once (not sure how) and in my excitement I decided to do a moonwalk as he walked past me on his way to the pavilion.

Unfortunately, I was still in the middle of the pitch. Umpire didn't mind but the groundsman absolutely destroyed me.

I bowled a horrendous longhop in a league game - it was so short I had time to shout "Bruce you stupid, fat c**t" as he hit it.

The batsman mashed it miles towards cow corner, where unbeknown to me, our youngest fielder had popped to the boundary, in the shadow of a large tree, to have a chat with his father and a suck on his carton of Umbongo.

He calmly stepped a yard in from the boundary and took the catch.

That was 5 years ago, and is still talked about by those that were there.

Can't think of any this season, I'm sure others will remind me though.

Previously on a quick pitch, chasing after a ball to the boundary I hatched a plan of placing my right foot as close as possible to it and stopping it with my left. I only succeeded in kicking it over the rope with my right.

At a home game the captain sees the opening batsmen and chucks the ball in my direction saying 'you did well against him last time, have a go'. Being a leg-spin bowler and not having the biggest field I thought, 'very brave, ah well nothing ventured, nothing gained'. Well after 4 overs and 70 runs against I thought something completely different.

It did me good though. Made me think about things and this season I had the chance to bowl against him again. This time I could restrict him to late cuts and none of the front foot power shots he does so well. Checked with the umpire, yep two balls left in my last over, 1st as much spin as I could muster and again a back foot late cut. Last ball a attempted slider that worked. He, with his weight on his back foot ready for a late cut could only watch as the ball went under his bat and removed his off-stump. I was very pleased to say the least.

Okay, my worst day on a cricket field. I'll set the scene... A beautiful sunny afternoon in the west of Hertfordshire, I'm at the crease 40 not out, my team 9 down and we're chasing a further 20 odd runs to win and I'm batting with our walking wicket number 11 (who can't resist a big ol' swipe at anything pitched in his half).

The opposition captain (an off spinner) is bowling. Earlier in the over I'd flicked a leg stump half volley over square leg for 6 and was fortunate to see another similar delivery heading my way.

I realize very late on in the ball's trajectory that it is not quite as full as i first thought and in attempt to get a bigger stride in to reach the pitch of it I hyper-extent my back leg to the point where my knee dislocates! ... My leg collapses and the momentum of my attempted shot spins my body 180 degrees. In the final stages of my fall my knee crunches back into place and before I know it the sight of the stumps flashes before my eyes and my head is suddenly halted in it's tracks... I get a face full of Ash!

With the stumps broken, the opposition are awaken to the fact it's all over and in their exuberant celebrations, they take 2 or 3 minutes before they realize I'm writhing on the ground in agony with my mouth pissing blood.

I'm eventually carried off the field and with my knee strapped up I head back to the club and drink Guinness until the pain stops and I can laugh at the lads telling me with my swollen top lip I look like Leslie Ash.

I took a screamer at gully - forgetting a no ball had been called - celebrated wildly as we would have won the league! Then I point the batsman to the pavilion and when he Doesn't walk I nearly start shouting at the umpire.. It then takes the captain and the slip corded to explain a no ball had been called...
Oops :(

When I'd just started keeping, and had become team keeper. The previous keeper is bowling, I'm stood up and te batsman pops in about 2 steps to my right and 10/12 feet in the air. I'm underneath it like a flash, hands too close together it hurts my webbing and falls at my feet. I still get jittery with high ones now!

I had a bit of a shocker in the field today. Firstly the batsmen hits a drive through cover chasing after it I make the ground and be d to pick the ball up very close to the rope with my momentum going to carry it over so I think quickly and in T20 style try throwing the ball in the air to catch again and stay in bounds. All I manage to do is throw is 10 yards further foward

Then fielding at deep long on a run in screen my name to take the catch to realise half way in I have judges it so wrong and it sales over my head for a one bounce four :-[. Lucky enough he was bowled next ball.

Two instances from memory stick out.

When I was 14 I played for Purley U16's in the John Charcoal Final at Guildford.  We were playing Send.  I dropped Adam Holliaoke on the boundry.  We won the game no thanks to me though !

This is a team worst moment. A few years ago playing against Camberley in a 1XI Saturday League match our keeper wasn't available and the 2nd team keeper wasn't available, so one of the boys stepped in.  We posted 216.  After 7 dropped catches (4 from the lad who kept) and the opening bowler having a breakdown in the middle of the pitch after the fourth or fifth dropped catch, they proceeded to chase it for nought.  Not a great day !

In the return game, they posted 273 for 5.  We chased 6 down.  Beautiful !

SOmethings gone a bit wrong with the bowling figures etc but the scores are right:

We play a short 25 overs league games here. It was one of my unlucky day, bowled pretty economic 5 overs with 2 wickets, but the real story was my team dropped 11 normal catches off my bowling that day. 6-7 were easy catches and 2 slip catches which weren't that tough (spilled from chest with 2 hands on the ball) I being an off-spinner. After 4 dropped catches I started counting them aloud and even my opponents joined me lightheartedly. When my Vice captain dropped a catch on 2’nd last ball of my spell Captain jokingly said “remember in nets prior to the season I told you, you need to take wickets with your own talent without depending on the team, this is what I meant”. Ended up losing that day, one of the worst days on field for me and for team as well.
