A question for bat makers really, would a convex spokeshave do the same job as a travisher in concaving a bat??
Cheers
Dan

Yes if the blade is bent like a travisher meaning it's convexed side to side. Some spokeshaves say convex but that means the sole is radiused front to back to shape tight curves but it will not cut in the same way as a travisher and may not yield the same results.
A "clifton convex spokeshave" is like a travisher but a "stanley convexed sole spokeshave" is not.

Ok thanks for that . . . so which would recommend? and are there any good online suppliers?
-
I like my travisher it's similar to one of these. No.4 or No.5 and it's a bit cheaper than a clifton spokeshave.

Ebay is always good and someone on here will probably have one going spare for you.
A spoon shave/carving spoon? not sure what the name is but I have one and it's aggressive but useful.

Yeah ive been in touch with Tim from g&m tools he's been a great help he recommended the beech handled travisher, just exploring all avenues really. I do like the look of the clifton spokeshave mind . . .
In that case does anyone have one for sale?
Looks like an interesting tool . . .

I thought you may have a stash. I have a cleft and drawknife sorted so looking for the extras to create a belter.
-
Check ebay US, they usually have loads of Atherton and Snell's
-
afraid its in my possesion now, think they are about £40 to buy a normal travisher...can recommend the A&S ones though having tried the other type too thanks to Shilly
-
Fusion also use the A&S ones
-
yeh they do a great job in taking off the wood, the other one i tried kept getting the shaving caught up in it and then casuing rash on the wood by jamming
-
I'm trying to locate the extras in the UK so all can be shipped together. It may not happen overnight but I'm in no rush.

Guys, is the No.6 any good at all? I can't find a No.4 or 5 on the bay...
-
6 will give a pretty large concave by the looks of it closer to a scoop!
-
Ok, will just have to wait for a #4 to show up on eBay then. Good ol' sandpaper and elbow grease in the meantime I suppose :(
