Title: Your best Paper Write ups..
Post by: Simmy on November 19, 2010, 10:04:02 AM
I like to google my self and reading all the old Cricket Arictles from are local paper!

here is my fav

Semi Final Of cup

OLD Sharlston reached the Pontefract League's Dyson-Skidmore Trophy final for the first time by edging out Featherstone in a thrilling semi-final on Sunday.

Batting first, Sharlston suffered an early blow when they lost influential skipper Dale McMulllan with the score on seven.

Sharlston's batsmen struggled to cope with the pace of Featherstone's Bart Thompson and Nev Lindsay but it was young paceman Jamie Robinson who did most damage, taking 4-27 to reduce the visitors to 89-6. Jason Ball rescued Sharlston with an excellent unbeaten 85. He put on 108 with Simon Ward who hit a rapid 67 as Sharlston closed on 203-7.

Featherstone made a solid start in reply with James Dunn (49) and Justin Miller (31) batting well.

Dunn was then joined by Dave Hiorns (41no) in a 71-run stand as Featherstone made steady progress.

Thompson added a quick 21 but it wasn't enough because Featherstone fell 13 runs short of victory, finishing on 191-6.

McMullan claimed 3-39 and Mark Reeves took 2-33.

After 30 overs, Sharlston were 123 and Featherstone were 125. The difference between the sides was Ward's excellent innings.

abybody got big headlines or anything post them up!

Claypole beat Timberland by 118 runs. Chris Dobbie hit 81 for Claypole while Timberland's Ben Tumilty took five wickets. Only one I can find online, loads of ones about me taking 3,4,5 in old papers.

I tried to get involved Die Hard style and climb through the roof but no chance of that.

There was talk of a documentary and some TV appearences, although they failed to materialise. A family of ducks were found in a drain and I was just old news by then

I think I played against him in Northants Div 3 last season?
We earned promotion along with you which means we get to play against the much talked about Robert Pack if he continues to play for Brigstock.

This was posted in an opposing team's match report about one of our players.

"Does anyone know if Steve Wharton ever stops talking as having spent 90 minutes listening to him whilst he batted he then sledged us for almost 3 hours whilst we batted!"

Yeah, fielding ineligible players.

It felt like we kinda deserved to go up though after we knocked off your 235 all out for the loss of only one wicket at your place and then you decided to shut it out when five down at ours. :-)

I was a bit between all our teams last season as I broke my thumb ect but if I can't get back into our ones then I'll most likley be playing for our two's and against you if you make the step up to your ones?

The wording on these make me smile!! Would have liked more runs tho :(

Mark Reading and Ben Thorogood opened the innings with the skipper’s instructions to “tee off” ringing in their ears. Thorogood departed earlier than he would have liked and Reading soon followed, clean bowled, having treated onlookers first to a sumptuous square drive on bended knee and then to an agricultural wallop over square leg for six onto the pavilion roof from a full toss off his two previous balls.

Mark Reading, coming on from the Warwick End, again demonstrated what a priceless asset he is to the club. Keen historians will know that West Indian legend Sir Garfield Sobers is generally acknowledged as the greatest all-rounder the game has ever seen. Sobers batted like a dream, bowled swing at pace, off-spin, leg-breaks and was a master fielder. Reading is all these things and more. Did Sobers regularly keep wicket too when required? I think not. Bowling his mystery-spin and the occasional quicker dart, Reading cemented his reputation as an all-rounder of immeasurable talent, taking two wickets and having the wherewithal (not to mention decency) to not bowl out his boss’s son towards the tail end of the Warwickshire CC innings.

'Agricultural Wallop'! Ha ha :)

Here's my best:

'In reply, Billy Burton and Proudman laid the WCC foundations, with a stand of 44 in the opening 10 overs. Burton aided by Dale Harris took WCC to victory in the final over. Burton unbeaton after a well crafted 33, Harris an important quick fire 17no.' Deleted  the waffly bits.

That was a great game- the only I played for Willioughby that season, was asked to open, lasted the whole innings and scored the winning four off the last ball. Brilliant! :)

Sorry to bring up a fairly old topic, but I've finally found this report from last year..... :)

In the Western Daily Press, October 11th 2009-

Headline- Buchanan and Bowditch Hit Big Scores In Minehead Cup Final

Minehead retained the Taunton and District Under 17's Cup when they beat their West Somerset Neighbours Kilve by 173 runs. The holders batted first and scored a mammoth 308-2 which was based on a 2nd wicket partnership of 265 between Ian Buchanan, who made 114 and an unbeaten 131 from Dan Bowditch. Minehead got off to a slow start thanks to some tight bowling from the Kilve openers, and lost opener Josh Hurley for 4. This brought Bowditch to the crease and the runs started to flow rapidly for Minehead thanks to some hard-hit straight drives from Buchanan and 2 towering sixes from Bowditch. Buchanan was first to reach his fifty but was swiftly overtaken by Bowditch who brought up his maiden ton for the club. Buchanan soon followed before he was caught in the deep for a fine 114. Bowditch and Stonier (22*) finished the innings nicely for Minehead as 35 runs were added in the final 4 overs of the innings.

wish it was me  :)

Couple of openers at my old club Marlow. Funny story behind it. The 2nd XI Captain comes up to my father, who's the groundsman, the week before the match and says "can you leave some grass on, we can't get anyone out" (we have draws). Our 2nd XI Captain of the time can read a wicket like Nasser Hussain, and leaving grass on at Marlow has little effect as it's generally dead anyway. My father leaves a ton of grass on and you can see the result! Oppo got 250-8 and another game was drawn...

Was a really good game even though we lost, I thought I was on for a big'un till I fended off straight to gully! The wicket pretty much stayed the same through the whole game and it was a sunny day so it didn't really matter about bowling or batting first I dont think :)

I got referred to as a "blunderbuss opener" (probably fair!) last season in the local press after scored 57 off 22 balls filling in for a team in a 50 over match in a league that is higher than I usually play, can't find the article but this one is two days later in a T20 again filling in at a higher level and I got worked over by someone far better than me:

"In reply, Peter Carey found facing up to Peatfield a rather different proposition than the Argylls medium pacers he had simply smashed around the KGV two days earlier.

The young quickie hit him on the helmet first up and knocked over his stumps later that same over."

Makes me chuckle, I had no idea he was as quick as he was as I'd never seen him bowl before, tried to hook the first ball bouncer and got nowhere near it, thank god for helmets :-)

Sorry to bring up an old topic- This was the write up from the opposition skipper from Saturday:

Unbelievably, though, it wasn't enough. Minehead's opening pair offered a number of contrasts, but Ian Buchanan played an innings of such uncompromising ferocity that the initiative was immediately rested from us. His fifty came up in 8 overs, his hundred in around 18 and his one-hundred-and-fifty in 27 – and in my view we didn't bowl badly!!! The only bowler who remotely gave him pause for thought was Joe Cook, who bowled bravely and with great skill, but without luck. Of course, I have to say “what if” to a dropped catch when he would have scored only 30-ish, but for a long while after that the closest we came to dismissing him was the ball passing high overhead on the boundary. He fell only when the run-rate had fallen to modest proportions with eight wickets in hand – a game-changer of an innings if I ever saw one. At this point the Bishopston character kicked-in; we dug deep, fielded like demons and bowled with passion to drag ourselves back into contention. Frost displayed his full repertoire and Bradley bowled a terrific comeback spell that saw five further wickets fall and a palpable air of tension develop in both camps. Sadly, there are no rabbits in the lower orders of teams at this level and we were not able to see off determined resistance that saw Minehead home in the penultimate over. Despite the shock of losing from such a strong position, we left the field with heads held high, having stayed together as a team, giving our all and appreciating everyone's efforts in what was undoubtedly a most unusual game.

The fairly big guy with the Gray Nicolls? He played a few aerial shots for edging behind, looked a bit dangerous! One of Colesy's mates played who used Ayrtek gear, the bat went nicely :D And it was at our place, but I'll bear it in mind when we play up there!

"Two goals from Jonny Ridd, the first into the top corner from 30 yards and the second a delicate chip over the advancing keeper"
and
"Ridd scored the goal of the game with a curling shot from outside the box" just to drag up a couple :)

Finally found one that had me in it, just a shame I wasn't always mentioned for the right reasons...

"As King played himself in he became more aggressive hitting two big sixes with one landing on the Pavilion roof off the bowling of the unfortunate Bradley"

"When on 34 Malherbe was dropped by Bradley at point but a few overs later with the partnership on 94 King gave a similar chance that Bradley was pleased to pouch."

"In an attempt to give Malherbe the strike White managed to run himself out for 2 following some more good fielding by the youngster Bradley."

"as the tight bowling induced a wild shot from Bradley who was caught by Slabbert for 6 off Websdale."

Ohh and that Malherbe went on to add 66 more runs before finally getting out for 100, so if I could have taken that catch, who knows? We might have won.

Sam Grant led the attack with 3-38 and Andy Isaacs snatched 2-12.

In their response, Steyning steadily lost wickets, despite Dave Curtis-Botting's 34, Sam Grant's 33 and Will Buckley's 19 not out, and they were all out for 136, having been 96-9.

Matt Keen took 4-25 for Goring.

Sewell said: "A few things went wrong but all credit to Goring as they played very well.

"We started fantastically, restricting them to one and a half an over for a while and getting them to 50-odd for five wickets. A couple of partnerships after this, though, helped them up to a decent total.

"I thought it was a very good total on the wicket and it would be difficult to get to. We bowled well and it was a good day for the seamers but they didn't get the luck at times.

"Goring bowled pretty well at us and it wasn't a day when we were giving away our wickets easily. They just beat us on the day and deserved the result.

"A couple of mentions have to go to Sam, who was a real class act with his bowling and batting, and Will, for some fantastic bowling, before coming in and hitting a few fours with the bat, which we all enjoyed.

We are still top of the league, only lost 2 this season so we should go up, but what with the league merger next year, god knows where we will end up

All a bit confusing for me mate - so when we win Div 4 this season, we will go up to Div 3 as normal yeah?
Title: Re: Your best Paper Write ups..
Post by: roco on July 13, 2011, 10:59:41 AM
If they keep it as a prem and 4 1st/3rd team divisions yes but if they get rid of the prem and have it as 1-5 for 1st/3rd teams then this years div 3 becomes div 4 next year so you will be playing the teams in the above league it's just what it's called there not sure I'm waiting on what teams go where as been asked to play for a couple next year as they know I'm not happy

•Cranborne sealed a thrilling victory over Studland after Phil Park and Dave Coy produced a match-winning eighth-wicket partnership. With their team slumping to 98 for seven (Dan Loader 49) in pursuit of the 191-run target, Park (40) and Coy (42*) came good to earn the verdict.

A great win that day as a lot of our blokes that I play with on a Sat played against us on the Sun.

Also from todays Bournemouth Echo:
WINTON skipper Luke Phillips tasted defeat at the hands of leaders Cranborne – and then tipped Ferndown Wayfarers to win the Division One title.

Cranborne’s comfortable six-wicket victory over newly-promoted Winton at Penny Lane saw them maintain a narrow advantage at the summit.

Chris Dobson (28) and Charl Van Wyk (28) were the only batsmen to make notable contributions as Winton were restricted to a modest 144.

All-rounder Oli Hand (4-39) and evergreen Phil Park (3-30) took wickets at regular intervals to prevent Winton from building any momentum.

And Hand (38), Adam Beattie (34*) and Carl Poore (28) all chipped in as Cranborne passed their victory target with relative ease at 145 for six.

However, despite watching Cranborne register their sixth win of the season, Phillips believes Ferndown Wayfarers will be the ones to catch.

He said: “Although we haven’t played them yet, I believe Ferndown Wayfarers will win the title. I think they have got the best equipped squad and will prove to be the best team in the league.”

Phillips, who has seen Winton climb through the divisions to the top flight, added: “We have found it a lot harder to take wickets at this level because the batting is of a much higher standard. But we have lost a couple of bowlers since last season and that has made a big difference.”

I skipper on a Sunday and we are currently top,  we played Winton on Sunday and as you can read, we smashed 'em! Think their skipper may have been a little disgruntled  ;)
