Title: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: Buzz on November 24, 2010, 10:22:01 AM
The time for pontification is over. The series will start in just over 12 hours.

Come on England.

Predictions here please.

For me I am going for a draw in the first, weather effected, test. Ricky Ponting has scored massive hundreds in the last 2 ashes games here, so expect him to do well again. KP has done a lot of talking, but not much during the last few days, expect the big mostached Saffa to come to the party in a big way. Also look out for Ian Ronald Bell to score a glittering hundred which will be forgotten as soon as it is scored, because of the ease at which the runs came.

Bowling wise - Watch out for Mitchell Johnson to be one of the leading wicket takers whilst being smashed all around the park.

3-1 to England.  Australia to only win a match when it is a dead rubber.  Ponting to resign in a flood of tears.  Monty gets made an MBE on the back of a stunning run out as sub fielder in the third test.

First test draw - i too think johnson will get wickets whilst not being economical, another fail for kp and good 80 odd from trott being englands top score, bell will not get many if any in this test (but will do late rin series!) ton from ponting :)

england to win 2-1 in series!

First test: Ozzies to win toss, bat first.
Watson to score BIG!!
Substantial partnership with RP
KP to shut his critics up with a decent Knock but throw his wicket late on
Johnson to get smashed all over the park
Broad 5 for plenty
Rain affected match ending in a draw with England chasing a 450+ score

England to win series 2-1

Good to Siddle replacing Bollinger. Bollinger vs PAK & IND was woeful. Additionally, Bollinger only came into the side because Siddle bust his back.

3-1 Australia. Adelaide will be a draw, graveyard for bowlers.

Jeet - good to see someone challenge the inane (myself included) and very unusual English Optomism...

On paper, Aus should win, regardless of the current form/chaos in the Aus ranks...

2-1 England, I think we may come unstuck in this first test to a massive hundred from Ponting.... Trott to score 70 odd, Petierson will be caught on the boundary playing a reverse sweep 'blindfolded'

It's the Johnson factor for me Buzz. Yes he was pretty mediocre in the Ashes 2009, but his record in Australia is wonderful. 84 wickets @ 25 is excellent and he loves the Kook ball

I'll be there tomorrow, as long as it doesn't rain and the first ball isn't collected by 2nd slip I'll be happy. The closest series in a long time, the weather isn't great up here at the min and there has been bowler friendly conditions all season. Be good to see how Anderson fares

Draw, A win, A win, E win, Draw.
Look for Katich to be the series highest scorer. Siddle to take wickets when it counts. Kp to have one big score of 80 so. Matt prior to get a few good knocks but tail won't support.

First test drawn and think will be a pretty sombre affair after all the fanfare of the last few weeks!

Series to be drawn 2 - 2 with England retaining the ashes!

Player of the series will be Broad for a load of wickets and valuable runs!

However, I hope im wrong and we win 5 - 0!!

I'm facing up to this with a little trepidation. I'm not used to this level of fanfare of the England squad going to Australia. It happened last time and we got hammered 5-0. I suspect it will be a much closer run thing than people are expecting, and never underestimating home advantage, I'd expect the Aussies to pull a massive performance out of the bag as they are after all playing the old enemy. I expect that Johnson will prove why he has such a reputation, which we didn't see in England, and the frailties of the middle order for England will once again expose themselves.

I can see a couple of Aussie players scoring big runs, Ponting and Clark most likely and I don't think we should be underestimating Watson at the top of the order.

The impressive bowling we've seen from Anderson will be hard pushed to show up due to the lack of swing in the Aussie environment and we'll need to be proven that the other english seam bowlers can manage on pitches that offer a lot less assistance  than the UK this summer!

At the end, I fully expect us to lose the Ashes back to the Aussies. Ponting doesn't want his glorious sotry to include "only captain to lose the Ashes to England three times"!

I'm betting on a 3-1 or a 2-1 to Australia.

I think England will edge the first test. Only reason being its very overcast and wet in Brisbane at the moment so will favour our attack more. 2-1 England for the series with a run fest at Adelaide!!

England batsman look very comfortable out there and Aussie attack lacks venom. The commentators implied overcast conditions for a part of the series. Anderson might be in business.

Hat-trick for Siddle! Good ball to Cook nicking off to slip, inswinger to Prior who played really loosely and was bowled and a beauty to Broad, inswinging yorker. Should really expect it first up to be honest though! Bell has just stood there, batting superbly well, and we are in a mess. It is swinging though and has all day, Aussies haven't bowled brilliantly so if England hit their straps an get into them early it could be carnage.

It's enough if we roll them for 100! A bit in this pitch for everyone, a couple of scalps tonight would help.

It's nice to wake up at 6.30 and find out that England still collapse like they used to. Bell and Cook batted well, and KP for flashes of it, but Siddle has impressed majorly. Now we've gotta do something with the ball.

The frailties of the middle order for England will once again expose themselves.
Hmmm. So the middle order didn't do too badly, just the failure of one of the openers and tail to do anything worthwhile. Woke up this morning to TMS telling me it was 254-9 and wondered what on earth had happened... Saturday side...

I may be opening myself to some grief here being a very proud Englishman, but.... It's good to see Peter Siddle back on his game after his nasty back injury. A lot of bowlers wouldn't recover as well never mind take a 6for on return.

Some of the dismissal shots were pretty average, pushing at the ball on bouncy wickets. Not that I would fair any better. Seamers need to put in a serious spell.

were looking ok when i went to bed at 2am....seems they swung it back their way with a hat-trick from siddle. 260 not the end of the world though and something to bowl at....needs early wickets and to get ourselves going in the field to begin our fight back

same happened to me ,  though when i did go to bed i thought we might collapse by the time id woken up

Siddle bowled well but the rest of the attack looked decidely ordinary, Australia on top for today, but we have more than one bowler capable of a spell like that. I am not sure Australia do...

Pretty sure if Johnson is mediocre in the 2ng innings, he could be replaced by Bollinger for Adelaide .

Hilfenhaus looked like he was not 100% fit(pace was low 130s), so Ryan Harris would replace him, he has the x factor, that Siddle aside, Australia are lacking
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane

I also think Ricky Ponting could be completely losing it as captain...
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: Beachcricket on November 25, 2010, 11:50:03 AM
Totally agree. I was expecting more from Hilfenhaus, I think he's a fantastic bowler. Johnson out - Bollinger in (when fit)?

There was an article on the bbc's website that was commenting on Ponting's captaincy, but it's not as though you have to do much to motivate greats like Gilchrist, Hayden, Warne etc. Not that I'm a great tactician but his bowling changes seem odd at times.

They won't drop Johnson as they had a chance when his radar went completely over here last year yet they still played him.
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: Rik on November 25, 2010, 12:24:57 PM
I'd be pretty surprised if they dropped Johnson. That isn't to say that I don't think he should be dropped, but they have persisted with him this long regardless of the burden...

I'm not Ponting fan but I didn't think he was too bad today. Started to lose it a little later on but luckily for the Aussie's Siddle had some plans of his own!

By the looks of things Johnson has been in great form in first class cricket recently, hit a ton and got wickets last week. Will be interesting to see how he goes in the 2nd innings......
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: Jeet on November 25, 2010, 06:30:55 PM
I don't think Australia like the idea of playing two left arm fast bowlers vs England. If Bollinger and Johnson both play, then there will be rough patches outside the left handers off stump at both ends of the pitch. By only having the rough at one end, it limits Swann, as in he can only bowl into the rough from one end. Additionally, I think if Hilfy pull up, then Harris will replace him, not Bolly.

First day of the first test, yes we didnt score nearly enough runs (too much flashing outside off stump). but consider this, take Siddle out of the figures and the rest were useless and went for bundles!!! Also the test is at the GABBA tropical north east oz, I Anderson will be essective anywhere it will be here!!! we saw the ball still swinging after 60 or so overs last night, Jimmy will be leathal!!!! Just need Broad and Finn to turn up tonight and the pressure will be on the batsmen!!!! Bring it ON!!!!

I stayed up and watched it til 2 (lunch) and thought we were in a pretty good position, Pietersen and Cook i thought were going to go on and make big scores, how wrong was i.... couldnt believe the scorecard when i was up this morning, especially after everyone has slated siddle.......

I am back in on a night shift tonight, purely cos i thought if im staying up all night i might as well get paid for it, im just hoping my sling box is working..........

do you think Strauss made the right decision in batting first..... i didnt think twice about it as its pretty almost the done thing to bat first, but someone questioned it earlier and has now got me thinking??? what do u think guys

what amazes me is how something dramatic always seems to happen on the first day of An Ashes series- Strauss out 3rdball and Siddle with his hatrick- amazing stuff!
Pretty disappointing first innings total, it did a little yesterday, but thought England were too loose. i fear a rather large first innings lead for australia and we will be right up against it... 1/2 hours till day two!!

I went to bed with Watson and Katich still in thinking "oh dear!". But I think that's okay they aren't scoring as quickly as I expected them to. Get Haddin out and mop up the tail and the game is finely poised.

katich is sending me to sleep, ugly and boring.

I always think he looks out of touch but he gets runs. You should watch Darren Bravo, he's got loads of Lara mannerisms.

i appreciate good cricket whether it be correct, unorthodox, even down right silly... however, simon katich is one man i cant stand, i cant deny that he does a job, nor can i deny that he has a proven record, but when he shuffles across that crease and defends with half a bat ball after ball after ball a part of me dies inside, all light in my mind fades to grey. also, please can somebody contact simon katich and tell him to get a new helmet, that old steel grilled albion makes him look more ugly and boring than he already is.

mike i respect prior as a player, however imo he  does not always play to the situation very well, first example that comes to mnd is when he got caught hooking in S.A when he had just got to the crease and england were in need of a recovery. until no i thought haddin may have been somewhat the same but this innings has shown incredible restraint and maturity on his part.
im not that fussed by stats in is sort of case where the stats are fairly similar, p;ayers get different opportunities depending on their team-mates etc

I do know for a fact that the Aussie boys are out to hammer Swann where ever they can

But only the first test but England can only play for a draw now at best

lets pray for rain of course you would try and belt the ranked best spinner in the world out of there and they know if they do we need a extra bowler

agree with beefy and slats it looks very ordinary from england

give colly and peitersen a bowl

I'll be staying up to watch tonight. ahhh, the joys of pinching your mates sky player account  :D

It does worry me though as the pitch is breaking up rapidly now and there were big cracks on it yesterday. When the seamers hit them it will do all sorts. Hilfenhaus will be the key for them and Strauss for us. Predicting a big score from Pietersen and Strauss tonight. Swann needs to get his act into gear soon too, bowled far too short in the 1st innings.

Yeah ordered one similar to yours Roco.

Around 2.10oz, big profile, low density with some heartwood but trust Mike to get everything right from there as he has done for me in the past.

Got a beauty of a Talisman on the way over at the moment will post some photos when it arrives.

Thanks for giving me your opinion Roco.

you seem to be forgetting Adelaide 4 years ago. Australia could run through England and knock the runs off. Lead is only 88.

Australia simply don't possess the same quality of bowlers of McGrath, Warne, Lee and Clark then was on top form. I would be amazed if such a feat as 4 years ago was repeated here, becuase it simply shouldn't happen.

Agreed mate - but, IMO, its about risks...if we came out this morning scored quickly - say 130 then get a quick 50 in the afternoon session and put the pressure on....if anderson bowls like he did the other day, and swann fires...then theres always a chance!
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: johan95 on November 28, 2010, 02:26:13 PM
Yarh, but there's always the chance Aussies send out a pinch-hitting opening pair (eg. Haddin and Watson/Johnson) and try to win in 2 sessions, though that could backfire spectacularly too. Makes for interesting viewing...!
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane

True, but in my opinion you've gotta' take a risk.....Difficult one as i have college tommorow and usually in bed by 10, Knowing my luck ill stay up and england will just play for the draw! Time will tell...

rubbish there no risk at all bat all day or at least till tea make them field all day i say...

Make no mistake the Aussie are not happy and there press are putting bi pressure on them HAPPY DAYS

I think bat as long as we can, forget the win. Australia would have come out today thinking they'd bowl us out by tomorrow morning and knock it off. They've got to be feeling quite disappointed, I suppose when you've not got Warne and McGrath it makes a huge difference.
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane

there is no chance though is there realistically...

Tell us your plan Matt

I would bite your hand off still for a draw England are notouriouly slow starters but after 4 days in which Australia have dominated 3 of them and still not looking like winning i would settle for what we have it hurts them more than us

Great day's cricket today, this time yesterday I would have thought that England losing would be the most likely result but Strauss, Cook and Trott have put in a great effort and given us a good chance of saving the test, although the job is only half done....
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: Kulli on November 28, 2010, 03:25:25 PM
Unless the pitch looks like offering a bit more for the bowlers I'd be tempted just to bat through for the full day and run the aussie bowlers into the ground.

Especially with the 2nd test starting within the week.
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: Talisman on November 28, 2010, 03:33:53 PM
Australia are the only team with a serious chance of winning, they could knock over the remainder for 100 runs and win, England would need to score 175 plus take 10 wickets in a day to win.
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: Mr Cricket on November 28, 2010, 03:38:09 PM
England cant afford to lose sight of reality, at various points in this game (being 0-1, 260ao, aus having lead of 200+) they would have given their collective right arm for a draw. Im sure that Flower and Strauss wont lose sight of this and England will do the professional thing and set out to bat all day.
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: PM7 on November 28, 2010, 06:36:50 PM
England have always taken the conservative approach and will never change their ways
If the Aussies were batting they will be looking for a win as they have dominated apart from yesterday
Should be a draw, Strauss and Cook will take their confidence into the next Tests.
Great start to the Ashes...gonna be a great series.
Title: Re: Ashes - First Test, from the Gabba, Brisbane
Post by: Johnny on November 28, 2010, 07:52:45 PM
Australia have such a good record at the Gabba that I think a draw will still hurt them. I personally think England are looking good. They seemed too nervous on day 1, but seem to have settled into the game now, and hopefully the series. I thought Anderson and Broad bowled excellently on days 2 & 3 and were very unlucky - if Swann gets it together for the next test I still think England can win the series

At the end of the day they have to beat us to get the urn back so more preside on them bat this test out as the gabba was there banker for a win so they will not be happy and neither will the press or public

Ive not seen Swann not play a pivotal part in a test match for a long time!! I definately think its a conscious effort from the aussies to target him and he's not been subjected 2 such an aggressive approach! I think one of 2 thinks will happen . . . He will like a marine adapt, improvise and overcome and make the ashes his or it will break him! For me the day will peter out into a boring draw!

Is there anything to be said for the following tactics:

Don't let them bat, as you know that it'll be a draw - make them bowl for as long as possible and tire them out.

Or is it better to say:

Send them into bat for the last 20-25 overs and hope to dent their batsmen's confidence by getting a few cheeky wickets?

Which tactic would you prefer?

Hmmm...
Is there anything to be said for the following tactics:

Don't let them bat, as you know that it'll be a draw - make them bowl for as long as possible and tire them out.
How soon is tea? If I bat up till tea, then we aren't likely to play beyond tea, and it will only give me another 5-10 overs, so not terribly exhausting.
Quote
Send them into bat for the last 20-25 overs and hope to dent their batsmen's confidence by getting a few cheeky wickets?
If my bowlers are up to it, we might get a couple of quick wickets, but the pitch is very flat and any good batting could be used as lifter for those batsmen. And we'll have a draw within a couple of overs of tea.

I think that option 2 is the better one. If you get those quick wickets on the flat track, it's very demoralizing after having watched the opposition hammer your bowling all over the ground... Of course, you do have to keep hold of your catches....
