whats everyones views?
i deffo think that he will give up the captains role once the ashes are over.
-
i dont think he will give it up, but i dont think he is passed it, he is just in really poor form.
But i do feel its about time someone else is phased in but im not sure who, as im not a fan of Michael Clarke as captain of Australia
-
I think if there was a clear candidate screaming 'captain material' then he would go. I think he will keep going as there are no outstanding candidates out there. And he is still one of their best 6 batters.
-
he'll give it up as he will be sacked if he doesn't stand down!!!!
Poor form has led prob come from pressure of being captain and the downward spiral
-
the only thing in their favour is the fact that they do not have another test series untill August 2011.......at least this gives them time for either clarke to rekindle some kind of form or for someone like cameron white or haddin to make a claim for the captaincy.
I expect him to try and stay untill the world cup next year
-
i think he should stay as captain but drop down the order. I cant see anyone else as a stand out candidate at the moment. Clarke doesnt seem to be skipper material to me
-
Clarke here in Australia is extremely disliked character, he had a falling out with Ponting in Perth because of his nervous reaction upon viewing the green deck which was one that showed weakness to the other team members which is not captain material.
If Ponting bites the bullet and drops down the order he will survive as Captain but Cameron White will take over at some stage.
-
See i see white as a good choice, but, to pick someone not even in the side as your new skipper right now would seem odd to me. I say get him in the team, get him used to the environment and then promote him as skipper.
-
I think he's still a great batsman, and has another year or two in him.
I think he should drop down to 4 or 5 and be relieved of the captaincy - however, whether his own pride will alow him to do this or not, is another matter.
-
True, there isn't really anyone to take over the captains role. I think they should look at bringing some younger talent through for the future.
I'm sure we'll all find out after the last test.
-
He should step down, Great player, But as The Cat said, I doubt he will be happy to demote himself in the batting line up, Then for another guy to lead the team, I would predict he would retire from International cricket
Clarke to be made captain, White to be Vice
-
ahhhhhh johng, that is a good shout, Cameron White would make a great captain!
-
His interview last night after England regained the Ashes convinced me that he will give up the captains role after Sydney, looks as if he is not interested anymore, doesn't want to wait another 2 and a half years for another shot at the Ashes... I might put a few quid on it happening!!
-
The look in his eye on the interview yesterday told me it over
Clarke for me will be lucky to keep his place
Since England found him out he has looked poor and no i not doubting his class
-
Ether way they will have to start and rebuild their team over a few years like england had to. Its been a long road for us to be where we are today but its been worth it!
-
Are we a better side than 05 or are we a better team but without maybe less individuals..
-
I think were working better as a team. Everyones contributing weather with the bat, ball or fielding in collys case lol.
We just seem to have more depth and options available then we've ever had.
-
agree Flower is a real man motivator and produces great team cohesion.
My main worry is although bar and wide it been a one way series it still is not put to bed and i know the famous you can only beat what is in front of you but the series is far from over
Iam looking forward to the sydney test
-
if England lose at Sydney it will put a real downer on the whole series though.
-
we wont loose it :D
-
Hope so, sounds like they're going to be absolutely leathered for the next few days anyway...
-
If you were a grumpy selector looking at the 2 teams how do they stack up?
Cook
Strauss
Trott
Pieterson
Collingwood
Bell
Prior
Bresnan
Swann
Tremlett
Anderson
Guys in red to consider dropping - to come in - Broad, Finn, Morgan
Watson
Hughes
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Smith
Haddin
Johnson
McClaren
Siddle
Hilfenhaus
Guys in red to consider dropping - to come in - ermmm? Hauritz, White, errrmmm????
-
mcclaren?
-
i really wanna see Morgan get a chance in the last test
-
Me too - harsh in Colly, but he's struggling big time with the bat, and for all the 'he's a great team man' and that he's a superb fielder and bowls a few overs of trundle, at the end of the day his job is to score runs.
Slap Morgs in there, give the bowling duties to Bell, Trott or KP and see what happens.
It's my belief that Bopara is his long term replacement. He too is a good fielder, and I believe a better bowler.
-
Bopara is a bit like Australia's flat track batsmen like Hughes and Clarke.
He great in the shorter form of the game but have seen play across the line a few times early on in his innings would pick Morgan before Bopara any day of the week.
Would not drop Collingwood in a million years he is England's version of Steve Waugh, I am a huge fan and adds another dimension that is tough and unrelenting and it is funny that Collingwood's hero is Steve Waugh.
-
steve waugh averaged 50
-
mcclaren?
FC who did you mean by mcclaren?
-
Australia, seeing as their pretty desperate to have a left handed opener, could give Shaun Marsh a go. His technically very good. Good cutter and puller. Fantastic driver as well.
Marsh
Haddin (in fine form and could do a similar job to watch Sehwag/Dilshan do)
Khawaja
Hussey
Watson (He's in good nick, but loses focus and never gets the big 100. Also adds steel to the middle order.)
White (c)
Paine (w/k)
Hauritz/O'Keefe
Copeland (they need a good seamer, who can bowl a tight line and length)
Siddle
Cameron (Pretty rapid, fair replacemt for Harris)
Punter, Clarke, Hughes are all woefully out of nick. Johnson is to hit and miss
-
Jeet I would go with a very similar side to you, I would like to seem Steve Smith in the ODI, he isn't a Test player,
I thinks it's about Australia gave the young players a decent go, and like Jeet that side seems good IMO
But I think the following 3 quicks should be eased in as they are good enough, they just need experience
James Pattinson
Mitchell Starc
Josh Hazlewood
I also rate Andrew McDonald and think he should be given an other go as he is good enough with both bat and ball
-

I'm not selector, mores the pity :( , but picking form players usually works lol.
Other guys like Ferguson, McDonald etc wouldn't be far off.
Australia needs to pick a youthful side and develop it for the future.
Short term pains, long term gains!
-
Like that side Jeet!!
Problem is your level of intelligence and forward thinking in coming up with that side is not something the Australian Selectors possess in abundance particularly Andrew Hillditch!!!
-
I'd be tempted to play Ferguson over Khawaja
-
Bring in Dave Warner to do a Sehwag job.
-

I'm pretty sure all of Australia wants anyone who doesn't play for NSW!!!
-
Bring in Dave Warner to do a Sehwag job.
He's shocking. He's a wild slogger.
Haddin gets in on form and class.
-

You could also say Sehwag is a wild slogger watching him play 20/20. Even the likes of Afridi done ok in tests with the field up
-

Wild slogger don't maul guys like Warne, McGrath, Steyn etc or score 300 x 2.
Anyway not to get side lined, Warner has played 4 F/C games, done nothing. He's technically similar to Phillip Hughes, so he wouldn't last very long.
-
Seems like Peter George has faded away after that India series. I thought he looked alright to be honest, he got Tendulkar out, albeit 200 runs later...
I'd like to see White or Ferguson brought into their side for the last test but cant see it happening. Seems their selection panel is very stubborn and probably wont alter the side too much.
Marsh would be a good option for the opening role ahead of Hughes. I'd prefer to see Jaques as he was in sublime form a few years ago against Sri lanka. Where is he now!?

Jaques has back surgery and hasn't recovered his form since. Rather sad really, he was a fantastic player when in full flow.

Why use Phil Hughes as an example when he scored two centuries in a test against steyn

If you're a big Hughes fan, then sorry if I offended you, but Hughes has done nothing since that series vs SA. Steyn and co where under cooked in that series.
Since then Freddie and Harmo found out Hughes.
-
Hughes will be a good player when he sorts out his technique... Getting back on topic, there has not been any real outstanding run scorer in the sheffield shield this year so far which is a big problem for Aus

-
George isn't quick enough, if he could bowl 90 mph he would be decent in test
-

The technically issues iron themselves out over time, but he doesn't seem to had a decent leg-side game atm, so unless it's in his zone(outside off stump) he struggles to rotate strike and puts too much pressure on himself.
He does have ability, otherwise every 21 yo would be hitting twin tons in their 2nd Test lol
-
Chris Lynn of Laver fame is in with a shout
Forget Hughes he has ability no doubt but looks fragile....
-

James Pattinson
Mitchell Starc
Josh Hazlewood
If these 3 can stay fit, within 2-3 years Australia could have a very potent young seam attack. Currently all 3 are returning from injuries, Hazlewood (back), Pattinson (back) and Starc (side strain).
-
Hughes would be quality batsmen if he sorted out his technique i feel , at the moment he looks a vulnerability
-
FC who did you mean by mcclaren?
I mean the fat one with a bad ankle!
-

Ryan Harris then : ;)
-

anyone would be a class batsman if they sorted their technique out to that extent
hughes had some success at state level through being unorthodox and everyone loves the way he plays because its a little different, however, sad truth is, put him in a test match against a decent attack and he comes undone time after time
-
Maybe the end of the road for Punter after being ruled out of the 5th Test.
Clarke rewarded with the captaincy job.
Still no recall for Hauritz
-
Clarke will fill in the Captaincy but will not get it permanently
-
No other option really apart from Clarke having been VC since 08, any other move from the selectors would have showed a serious lack of confidence in him. His batting slump wont help him at all as that was what seemed to be bothering Ponting.
Im looking forward to seeing Khawaja bat.Would have been a good time to let White in the door and incredibly Hauritz is still missing? Ponting is still a great player and class is permanent, hope to see him back in the World Cup in good nick.
-
Sadly I think his time is up. After the series has finished, the selectors wont have to pick a test side until August. By that time I think other people will be banging on the door for selection and he wont fit in. Afterall he is 36 at the moment and the aussie selection panel will probably start looking at younger guys and plan for the future.
There is talk that he is aiming to get in the world cup squad but again I dont think they will select him due to age and what with his form being so poor...
Regarding captaincy they had to pick Clarke really seeing as he has been vice since 2008. I think Hussey or Haddin would have been better options with their form and what not but again age isnt in their side either so would prefer someone younger.
