Title: Laver & Wood the current in bat........
Post by: Canners on December 29, 2010, 10:31:25 AM

after some recent posts on the forum about Laver 7 Wood, and after reading a few very positive reviews i decided to send an enquiry to L&W as on their very good looking new website it says they spec you up a bat to your size etc free of charge.... so anyways i filled in the questionnaire as below and waited patiently

Age: 27|Height: 5.11 ft |Build: Solid
Batting Position: 3
Type of cricket played: Club
Weight of current bat: 2lbs9ozs
Size of current bat: SH Tim Keeley Custom Right or Left Handed: Right Handed
Type of Wicket: Grass wicket - slow and low Heard about Us: Information from
a club Referral Details:
Club Name: Horndon on the hill CC
Comments: like driving off the front foot, normally go for a low middled
bat, but love the pickup of a higher middled bat. Tend to play with a
straight bat rarely cut or pull anymore.....

i recieved a very prompt reply as below

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your request to be sized up for a Laver & Wood Bat.

We have worked out the sizes and spec best suited to your game from the
information supplied by you through the request form on the laverwood.com
website.

Blade Length for your height would be: Standard

Handle Length: Men's Standard Short Handle

Handle Type: We usually recommend Oval, this encourages straight play and
helps prevent breakage. We are able to make the handle round if you prefer.

Sweet Spot we would recommend for your game would be Normal/Middle to
Slightly Lower

Weight should be   2lbs 8ozs  - 2lbs 9ozs

I think that in the special profile you would have a good sweet spot that
would generate nicely. You would also get the nice fast bat speed associated
with this profile and reasonable edges. The slightly lower sweet spot would
suit the pitches you play on but I would ensure that I kept plenty of wood
higher up so that the pick-up and balance of the bat feels great.

Please let me know if there is more you would like to know about our bats
and what we can do for you.

after requesting pics this is what i recieved and am loving the look of the profile, nice thick edges big spine

Just a mere £360 for the reserve and £340 for a private bin..... i stated i want pure performance over looks and they said this would meet my needs....

oh and they quite generously offered to throw in knocking in free if i order before close of play on friday.....

The wood shavings do add a very nice touch, thats a serious amount of bat making history right there.....

the profile is called the 'special' and i think its quite fitting

Having been through this with them before, the service is great, and AlRidd can comment on the quality of the final product, but even the "cheaper" bats are spectacularly good quality. Laver's have a very definite shape to them that you can look at and say "That's a Laver". This example displays it beautifully!

I'm not sure if the purpose of the pics they sent were to show you a stock bat or the bat they have made for you, but for the price I would insist on having one made to spec

I think they must be stock bats, but I guess they have a big range of these...I've just done a form now, out of interest. Can't wait to see the quality that comes out at the end, and if it's worth forking the money out for: though not yet, maybe in a couple of years!

Despite the fact about a week ago you were saying your parents will not let you get anymore bats and will throw any away that arrive?

Mike,

The only thing I would say is get him to show you a profile of exactly how concaved they are. don't be seduced by a big profile, as sometimes this is acheived by a lot of concaving, which makes the bat less forgiving.

That said, I know you middle everything, due to your technique and 'solid build'   :D

Brucie i like you more every day :)

i'm not a big fan of concaving tbh, so may require more pics

His bats are very good, he is a great bat-maker, I've had one and sold it on to a 1st team player at my club who loves it.

However, in my opinion his bats look huge until you look down the spine and see how much wood is taken away - it's a bit like the Fusions of old.

Bruce

It is a good point i could always tell if i was in form with my laver because of the concaving they are not forgiving at all

the special profile PB that i had was pretty concaved at the back and the remove alot of wood on the back of the spine to keep the weight down from what i can see from all the profile pics that keep popping up.
