1.SS TON PLAIN GRADE 1 2lb 6oz
Bought this after Christmas last season off Asad and it has not failed to deliver.
Balanced and pick up is quality in terms of league it is up there with the Laver and not far of the Chase but in terms of value for money it has to be the best bat....
2..CHASE CUSTOM BAT "THE BATMAKERS OWN" 2LB 9OZ
Well were do i begin with this beauty for looks not many can match it in my collection and in terms of pick up and performance it is right up there..
3..LAVER WOOD PRIVATE PIN
Well this is nearly for the graveyard of bats it has had a new shoulder and with another transplant it will have another..
Sam Peplow borrowed this last season and he will agree it up there with any bat in terms of performance and pick up shame it nearing the end of it life....
Some bats sadly get closer than others this has been my number 1 bat of all time

saved for my new shape
Right this is what i have come up with not great but better than my first try

I know it not great but it better than my first effort and in truth i think i could use this shape
-
The new one weight in at 2lb 6oz and is a very good pick up not great wood but i feel confident i am getting better
-
in the long term mate , you looking to make your own match bats I take it ?
-
In the very long term maybe i need a lot more days at a workshop which i can get but my forte is more soft's and sales side of things and possibly clothing but i like tinkering with bats i know there not great but the finish on it in better pictures is not too bad..
I have taken a little to much off the back near the splice and it is almost flat but then again you do not hit the ball there...
I expect criticisim to be honest mate but i will keep trying and learning all i can.
I enjoy making/recking clefts and that all that matter to me there no business model yet but i might in the future buy into a brand

Is that a cheeky attempt at a Scoop in the background ??
-
gn millennium i would say ???
-
very L&W esque top half on the splice area making it almost flat.....this must be where they loose the wood to bring the weight down
-
Ill go with tom on the GN Millennium theory, looks like a few good blades tho
-
ohhh i love that laver...the memories :D
-
the top 3 bats are ok what i want to know is what people think of the shape i did on the back of this bat...
used a no5 travisher looking at flattening the edges towards the bottom.
Would people like the shape
The bat in the background is a experiment it was a millenium but i have added a few experiments...
-
dave in my hubble and inexpert opinion the edges need to be made sharper rather than rounded on the back of the bat as most branded bats have, may help to improve the appearance by sharpening up the fin of the spine as well.
Good progress though!
-
Not the best pictures but the fin is razor sharp mate i agree about the edges that the real drama iam having there more sharper than they look but not sharp enough
question how do you get them sharp
-
agree with tom, gives a crisper more bat like look!
Better than your first attemp for sure dave!
-
This is number 2 of 5 bats i have done the millennium is the crown a innotive design i showed a batmaker and guess what...
He pissed himself but i tell you what it has massive edges and a big big spine...
-
Sam you could borrow the batmakers bat twice the bat of the laver
-
angle of the travisher mate will shapren them up.....iv only made/shaped 6 bats now so dont take me as an expert but you need to create a right angle with the edges to shapren them up a bit by keeping the tool at the correct angle.
-
In the past i've used a drum sander and run it up and down the edges, seems to give a fairly crisp line.
I think that the shape you have made would look significantly better on a heavier bat, just because it would exaggerate the entire shape. At the moment i think it looks good and, as is always the case, probably looks better in the flesh.
Good stuff though.
-
And that is the problem for me i get carried away and the edges come out at 25mm this one is around 32mm

Once your happy with the shape/profile of the edges turn the bat on the side secure in the vice get the plane and take a bit off with long whole length of the bat passes this will make the leading edges razor sharpe and ensure they are even. . . hope you know what I mean???
-
yes cheers Dan
-
Good good :) I quite like the shape of the bat mate but your edges need more shape to them, to me it looks like there is no shape . . . I would have thinner egdes at the shoulder and toe and try and exaggerate the bow and middle with thicker edges
-
There is shape but there rounded to a degree
What i was after was the laver special but i managed to round the edges instead of sharpning them....

Must have some edges on it if you can see them from space, pro cleft?
-
oh yeh gert massive mate lol blame iphone typing and its constant urge to make up words when typing ;)
-
Might give bat-making (willow wasting) a go in the summer.

My thoughts as well, sounds like a plan!
-
i give you a tip not a batmaking one...
Look on ebay for a big bat of around 3lb plus work on them first before working on a cleft...
-
I going to spend a week at a batmakers soon hopefully there i will get a good grasp of the dark arts...
I think a batmaker should bring out a how to it would sell without doubt..
-

Thanks for the offer, is a cracking one. But i have learnt with borrowing bats that if its a good one, you can never have it! and its painful so its not a good idea for me. Again thanks though.
-
Good bats Dave
Just a quick question why have you removed the stickers?
-
I remove all the stickers every season to give them a full refurbishment and stick new decals on
Just a thing i do i like my kit looking new and like to look after it
bit of a geek
