Title: Brave of them...
Post by: Julesoak on January 20, 2011, 09:06:42 PM
Flicking through the new Wisden Cricket Monthly and there's an article on the Cenko, which is the usual guff.

However the interesting bit is the last para:

"Several internationals such as Sangakarra, Gayle and Tendulkar use Newbery bats but with the stickers of their sponsors. "People don't realise how how many players actually use our bats," Lenham says. "Sachin actually comes down here and Tim makes them in front of him. Gayle scored 333 with one of our bats - we know this because he left the 'Hammer Edge' sheet on."

May well be true, but not often publicised like this!

very brave indeed i have no doubt at sometime newbery have made bats for them but they have broken a un written rule and suspect a backlash from the brands of the others.

O thinl they have broken a big no no and makes them sound a tad desperate

Possibly - or that they they believe that the buying pubic (well the wisden readers) generally know that pro's frequently use whatever bat they happen to like and put the stickers on them.

I don't see there will be much of a back lash, but it is a good plug for Newbury - who are looking to increase their market share (so their investors can get their money back) hence the PR spin.

The business may just be becoming a little more cut-throat!

The fact is that alot of top batsmen go to different makers to try them out. Millichamp, Bradbury and others have at one time or another made bats for the Pros to try out. But as Dave said, it is normally kept quiet!!

Could be a very clever move to reduce sponsorship costs. Newbury sponsor less players (if any) and at that point can make comments without reprisal. Who's going to put newbury stickers over another makers bat if they don't get paid for it.

Good idea if you ask me.

I doubt anyone could do anything about it to be honest.

Newbery don't have contracts with any of the big bat makers (I presume!) so they can't do anything on that front. The players haven't done anything wrong because it's not coming from them, so nothing on that count. And Newbery can't be touched because it's true!

But Buzz, do you honestly think the majority of cricketers know that players may not use the bats of their sponsor? We on this forum do, but most of my team wouldn't have a clue!

If it was printed about one of our players I'd definitely have lawyers look at it as to the wording.

i do not work in the trade YET

But what statement is amazing i sure all the batmakers everywhere are happy with them

Batmaking is a dark art and is a closed shop Newbery have just opened and sold out there

Julesoak it not about anybody doing anything and Newbery will have contracts with some very big batmakers and quite a few small ones who will not be happy with Newbery loading the laundry out in the open..

Totally agree with you mate - but could it be the opening of the floodgates!!

Mind you WCM has a circulation of about 30k, so I doubt it will have that much impact...

But as Tom infers - everyone starts talking about it and suddenly all that money spent on sponsorship looks a little less worthwhile

It is up there with the mother of all woppers they know the trade and what they have done is Cringeworthly Wrong

it not about the size of it it that they have announced it for cheap publicity

another project for Wikileaks to work on? Come on Wikileaks tell us the payers who are not using there sponsors bats but getting them made elsewhere.......

IMO, not very professional of Newbery to make such comments.

The fact is that Sachin for the last 18m has been using a BAS with which he scored 200 in the ODI against SA and in fact payed majority of his cricket with the same bat in the last 12-18m period. Guess a BAS bat with hammer edge becomes a Newbery bat....so, no use spending £240 on a Newbery just put a hammer edge sheet.

Would be interesting if Newbery did the same to some of the English brands. I think that would expose them to more of a chance of a lawsuit. I don't see Ihsan doing much about it. Note sure about SS, BAS or Adidas.

Could this be a batmaker conspiracy to reduce the cost of sponsorship in difficult times? Is it really newbery acting on their own? A slightly controversial view I know!

I doubt it about this it about losing face and trust as i find the industry there a lot of cross pollination and corroboration maybe they have closed a few doors with this

Newbery have TK, the best in the business.

How many of these are newberys and how many tim keeleys?  We know many makers make for more than one company.

It all good being the best but to a average reader of wisden Tim Keeley is not known i suspect and this is not the way to introduce him

If he is the best hypothetically why do Newbery not sell on the scale there own brand like the big boys

mass production can compromise on quality standards.

how many bats have something to do with him or his pressing?

No, because the others respect Newbery's business.

what when the other companys sell there bats cheaper than newbery .........

Why buy a bat just on a sticker

some of the other company's could make money telling you it's made by them but do not out of respect.....

oh there is mate you do not know the true extent of it but that not for me to say

The gap between top end bats by company's is larger than ever
