Im watching the highlights now and he def had the pumas on. He could have them under his trousers though a la Nic Pothas...although he did it to save spraying his pads and Bates his understudy at Hampshire does the same

It's quite nice keeping without pads though. I do some drills with a couple of our bowlers at nets and it's rather liberating!

I suppose that if you are good enough, then it can be done, he has amazing hand-eye then though :) - much easier to move, could be incase balls are fired down the leg side, easier to dive without inhibiting pads..would love to know the real theory behind it though.

do you have to wear pads to keep in, or not??

I doubt you do, it's a bit like a helmet I suppose. I'd be thinking that all gear is optional, obvs a bat is useful, as are pads, but if you are good enough to keep without pads then go ahead, but you compromise your safety I think... :|

In all fairness how many times do you see keepers getting hit in the shins?

They have gloves to catch the ball!!

Mccullum did the same in New Zealand against Pakistan. In ODIs he would take his pads off for the last 5-10 overs  (don't remember exactly) so that he could run and stop the byes and quick singles.
