Title: Chucking
Post by: 123* on February 23, 2011, 11:25:55 AM
I was watching the AUS V Kenya game the other night and it struck me as how blatant Shaun Tait was chucking the ball, he even makes the attempt to cover it with a totally unecissery amount of bandage on his elbow, does anyone else think he chucks it?

I've always thought he was a chucker, same with Brett Lee. I just happen to like Lee so don't ever say it!

See what you mean though

It's just the flick at the end but all within the limits

Amir is the same isn't he? Doesn't chuck, but has that wrist flick which as you say, probably what makes you look twice

Okay then here's a little story you might like to hear; I'm doing my umpires course at the minute and naturally we had to do the subject of throwing the ball, one of the mentors on the course works at Durham a few year ago when Shoaib Akhtar was there Phil Mustard asked him how far he stands back around 20 paces he say's except when I bowl my quicker one ill give you the signal go back another 10; Phil surely it can't be that much quicker?! Shoaib then goes on to say it is when I bowl it from here with his elbow almost at a 90 degree angle, certainly changed my opinion on him!

To get any sort of movement and pace into my truly knackered bowling arm, I use my wrist, a lot. Ball moves off the seam and swings and it causes an awful lot of questions regarding chucking, but no-one has ever called me for it in 20 odd years of playing cricket...

Law 23
3. Definition of fair delivery - the arm
A ball is fairly delivered in respect of the arm if, once the bowler’s arm has reached the level of the shoulder in the delivery swing, the elbow joint is not straightened partially or completely from that point until the ball has left the hand. This definition shall not debar a bowler from flexing or rotating the wrist in the delivery swing.

Just confirming what others have said.  I too am doing the Umpires Level 1 and was surprised how long we spent on this part.  We were told that great care has to be taken, particularly in dealing with Junior players with respect to "throwing"....the use of the word "chucker" was discouraged!

Can't comment about anywhere else b ut in scotland there were always 2-3 guys who everyone knew chucked it but that never got called, so long as you don't make it anywhere near playing pro you'd be very unlucky not to get away with it.(Thats anyone who cuhucks it, rather than Tim specifically)

Yeah there is a guy in our league that does not bowl his quicker ball(pace bowler) against us as we all know him quite well (local team)as we all know he chucks it and so does our umpire so called it everytime he tried it

There is something about the phrase 'our umpire' that just doesn't seem right to me!

Each team supplies a qualified umpire for each game but don't take that comment to be he is on our side as he won the umpire of the year trophy for division 1 for bring the fairest and best umpire he just knows this bowler well so knows his tricks

To be fair, I've been umpires by county level umpires in that time. Hope they know what they are doing ;)

As I said, I wasn't commenting on you as an individual case, just pointing out plenty of people do chuck it and get away with it as neutral umpires (or opponants) don't want the hassle.
