Currently searching for a lid and looking at either the Masuri Ti or Albion 98 Ti.
And I have had the Arytek conversation a few times, they are just not my cup of tea I'm afraid.
Seeing as Tom is pretty much THE man to talk to on helmets, would he be kind enough to offer some impartial advice as to which lid would be the best in his view? I have a massive nut as well, and probably too much hair, so would need a large I reckon.
I also keep, not sure if that would change my choice. Obviously looking for something lightweight whilst offering protection from shattered teeth
Thanks in advance
Will

Will agree that you have a massive mullet mate... :p
I would go for masuri. I have used both and find masuri the mist comfortable
-
That's what I was thinking, I believe the Masuri grills are much better.
It's not a mullet mate, just a throwback to the 60's. Comes with being a drummer ;)
-
Be different and shave it all off lol
-
Shut up reds ;)
If opting for a masuri, should I bother with Ti? I am not facing 80mph every week
-
I have a titanium purely because when I keep wearing it, its nice and lite if I'm wearing it for long periods
-
So is the stell much lighter than the Ti? Suppose it's worth the extra £30
-
I've had both of the grilles and I personally don't think it justifies the extra money. Yes it is lighter, but it's £50 I'd rather put towards a new bat!
-
But is it going to make a better job of saving my face?
-
Masuri Ti would be the best non Ayrtek lid in my opinion, I've had a Masuri for 20 years exactly and they fit my fat head. I don't bother with a Ti grille myself as it always gets sold to forum friends on the look out for a cheap one. If I wore it for hours on end I'd get another but Steel is plenty strong for club cricket. I have worn one from a Somerset fast bowler direct in the grille and jaw without any damage apart from ringing ears but obviously there is a risk no matter what you wear.
Masuri Steel is also the cheapest method at £50 posted brand new.
-
I think go for the Masuri too - I like the ti grill - the lightness does make a difference - I have kept in it too. (actually I should clarify that final statement - I stood behind the stumps with keeping kit on. I wouldn't describe what I did as keeping.) I am pretty sure that Tom has clarified elsewhere on the forum that the Ti Grill will offer better protection as it is stronger.
The most important thing about a Masuri lid has been alluded to above, you need to have a good volume of hair poking out the back, to ensure you have the mid 90's Robin Smith/Mark Ramprakash look. I know from first hand experience that it not only looks the part but also intimidates the opposition.

You are right Buzz, absolutely terrifying. I will make sure I get the volumising shampoo out the night before games in future.
More than happy to stump up the extra cash for something that will keep the plastic surgeon off my back for a few more years.
Perhaps I could work a paisley cravat whilst batting, or should I save that for when I break out the flat cap for the spinners?
-
Hmmm tough one....ti will be lighter but as you say more expensive, fro mthe safety aspect your better off with an Albion Club over masuri.
If your not too fussed about this masuri shell will be lighter when fitted with a steel grill and prob cater for a larger size bonce! As Mike says for £50 your not doing too badly....obviously if you wanted ultimate safety and lightness you would be stepping into my office :)
-
Every time I speak to Tom I feel like I am watching Wall Street ;)
Tom, you say an Albion Club over a Masuri? Any particular reason as to why that is? I will be purchasing a Ti grill with whatever choice, don't mind spending the extra to be honest, all for a good cause!
-
I'd say the Ultimate 98. My masuri Ti grill is pretty close to my chin and if I get hit the grill would smack into my chin, also my chin seems to extend pass the grill. The Ultimate 98 is much better as the grill sits is a nice distance away, plus it is lower so my chin is easily covered.
The Masuri is lighter, but only by around 70 grams, so I'd still go with the Ultimate 98.

And another spanner into the works...
-
I really like the masuri Ti and use to have an Albion. I sometimes keep wicket and couldnt imagine doing it in the Albion at all. The masuri is a much more compact helmet and offers a really good fit. In terms of weight, i know we \are talkingonly a few grams but when its your head during keeping for hours, it can make all the difference!
-
Have gone for the Masuri Ti mate, and seeing as I keep, agree with you on having a more compact lid
-
Will you be keeping next season?
-
I shall indeed be keeping this season mate. Providing I don't get one in the teeth ;)
-
Little tip for our pitch although the balls bounces ok it does not carry so when I kept I just stood up to everybody just trying to help
-
Thanks mate! Will keep that in mind.
Wil be sending you the dental bill if you're wrong ;)
-
Deal as if your half decent you will be ok it takes serious pace to get anything that would do that on our pitch and not much of that about
-
Good stuff mate, we have you on 23rd July away, but got you 2nd game of the season up at ours
-
I will try to get back for the home game as want to see you at work lol but I will make the pub as the ground we are playing the game is usually quite a short one either way
-
Good man, will be good to have a beer and a chat. You have a club bar at the ground then?
-
No we are sponsored by the local so go there but have beer fridge and a sun deck at the ground
-
Sounds lovely mate!
We had a meeting yesterday and are entering a 2s into Div 7 as Shrewsbury 4s have dropped out, which is good for the club. Moving in the right direction anyway
-
All good I know a couple of lads who play div 7 not very good but they have fun
-
guys, my first post and i note in a helmet thread there was no mention of "fit" surely the most important thing about a helmet is that it fits thus staying in position when that rising ball slips under your bat and clocks you on the grille you can decide which grille once you have a helmet that fits your noggin properly
-

thats the advantage of the ayrtek one size fits all :D

I know the Masuri fits my head mate, first thing wa trying someone elses on.
Good point however ;)
Welcome to the forum pal
-
perhaps, common that OSFA doesn't fit anyone properly in any form of eqpt, more commonly used to reduce cost of additional moulds and stock holding, but if it happens to fit you well that's a win
-
tks jnc86 just cruising a few topics and getting a feel for it. india v ned isn't gonna keep me awake though, see you next time
-
I am one of the lucky guys who has a really good fit with the Masuri. Its the bigger of the two sizes and i love it. Plus some of the Aussie boys like haddin seem to like it. If the ti is good enough for them, itzsmore than good enough for me :D :D
-
I have both the helmets currently the s-l albion ultimate and a masuri 58-61 titanium also have a slazenger ti just for good measure.
The masuri and slazenger are very similar as most of you know apart from the button on top of the masuri and the fully cloth covered peak of the slazenger but i find them a great fit.
The albion ultimate though in the s-l size is a real great find i had a larger one i didn't like so i got a smaller one and it is fitting well and my first choice after i changed the big hefty front pad and put my swoppa one in.
Overall i have used many helmets in my time and yes it all personal preference but at the minute the albion is my preferred helmet
-
Albion over Masuri for me.
As for the debate around Ti vs steel grills, it all depends on the grade of the metal being used. I've seen seriously flimsy Ti grills in the past that wouldn't protect as well as steel. Titanium is very expensive so the tendency will be to skimp on the amount used. Titanium ounce-for-ounce will protect better than steel, but beware of the super-light grills.
-
I've been through the process and finished with this; http://www.aswanicricket.co.uk/albion-cd-centurion-cricket-helmet-112-p.asp (http://www.aswanicricket.co.uk/albion-cd-centurion-cricket-helmet-112-p.asp)
I've never had a ti grill, (am 41 you know) don't see the point at club level. The Albion fits my rather large swede nicely. Along with the Halo headband to keep the sweat of my gegs, it's a great combo.
Get this one and spend the rest of booze and women, or waste it on a bat!

very valid point, Ti will only serve better if it actually a proper grade of it being used. As a raw material this is very expensive and the cost price of the grills is rising.

I'd always go an Albion over a Masuri. The reason for this is that I feel Albion have been around longer and are always trying to improve their helmets. I also find them to fix extremely well, and look a lot better (Personal preference). I also really like the new Albion grille.
