Bad looks and great performance
« on: May 02, 2011, 11:20:32 AM »

2 things got me started on this, firstly perception of a bats quality because of its looks, and secondly that I seem to be the only person at my club that thinks it's possible to get a great performing wavy grained, knot ridden, water damaged bat.

Having thought about the "£400 bat" that appeared on here a while ago, it got me thinking about looks and performance. Whilst similar topics have raised this point, I would like to offer a possible twist or proposition.

The potential performance that the "£400 bat" offered was phenomenal, it looked beautiful and had the seal of approval from Talisman who, as we all know, is abundantly aware of what a good bat is.

However is it possible to get the same level of potential performance out of a bat that's all kinds of ugly?

you mean like a velum bat but with pro performance... oooh

maybe a lucky pressing session perhaps?

Doesn't really have to be velum bad I suppose ... just wavy uneven grains, heartwood, pin knots and butterfly/bar stains would make it ugly enough

As I posted before, this bat taps superbly and is a net back from a Pakistan International test batsman.
But looks totally rubbish!! Dirty looking grains and certainly not the most cosmetically stunning bat in my collection!  :(

This is what I'm talking about, it's certainly less attractive when compared to some of the belters in your collection but it doesn't make me recoil in horror. Surely a really hideous piece of wood could make a belting bat? (unless I've completely misunderstood what makes a good bat).
