Getting out to Slower balls
« on: May 01, 2011, 08:10:04 AM »

Any thoughts of what I can do to improve played 2 games + out to slower balls in both yesterday played off back foot drive lobbed to bowler.  May have been scoreboard pressure + hard hands (but not trying to hit)to get score moving.

On another note may need thinkng of changing approach to ensure I bat through most of the innings + not to worry re scoring runs as sure they will come as batting line up is not so strong this year.

Keep it simple. Don't move until it leaves the bowlers hand and watch the ball not the general area but fix your eyes on the seam this will help you overcome the slower ball.

As others have suggested, I don't consider them slower balls because I try to play every ball on it's own merits. If you watch the ball, you shouldn't be in any more trouble than normal. People get out to slower balls because they premeditate shots.

Don't think I premeditated the shot however will try + watch ball more closey as was trying to get forward as pitch slow + low however saw this just short of a length + was trying to drive off back foot up to mid/of + lobbed to bowler.

If I'd picked I'd have pulled it over midwicket for 6

  • Clear your mind, stay still and watch the ball

i have had trouble with the slower ball too - when bowled well they are really tough to play - especially the ones you think are going to be waist high full tosses and drop to be yorkers...

To be honest, you just have to watch for the change in action/tell and try to pick it as the bowler bowls, then set yourself to block the first couple until you have the measure of it. Yesterday I was bowled two, one did me all ends up but was wide of the stumps, the second got hit...

Apart from this I am feeling really good with my technique but feel with the way side is going to make up that need to to play within myself to bat through the innings.

Cheers Buzz glad I'm not the only one just need a bit of luck to have that one knock to get me going
