Indentation caused by knocking?
« on: May 14, 2011, 11:02:07 PM »

As the title says, lately when I have been knocking my bats I mallet them hard so a dent is caused and then I try to even this out. I read this in James's knocking guide so I am following that, so when I run my fingers on my bats (like Icon LE, Harlequin etc ) there is indentation and some parts are dented while others aren't. In this process of knocking I have seen cracks on the face of bat too!

So the question I have is that is this a good thing or I am doing it wrong and shouldn't be doing it this way...?

Buy a new SC and you will see a dozen or do mallet dents around the middle. Same applies to the new Fearnleys.

I wouldn't worry about it, think logically, if you don't do it hard enough with a mallet, it is only going to happen when you use the bat in a match anyway. The purpose of knocking in is to compress the face, if you are not denting it, you are not compressing it.

Cheer guys, I won't worry now :)

One last question that some areas have been dented while some haven't so the ones which haven't (even after trying to even out) is it fine if I leave them as is?

SC are preknocked by Julian? Sounds even better...:)

SC aren't pre knocked in, but in the middle of the blade there will be a dent. The purpose of this is to show you where you should take the rest of the blade down to.

You're never going to get it perfectly flat using a curved mallet.

Seriously mate, stop being precious and get out and use the bats. They may very well all be good bats but they won't score runs sat leaning against your bedroom wall. At the end of the day they are made of soft wod and will break/crack/die. Just remember you have already spent the money, so you may as well use them, cos you're sure not going to make a profit selling them on. :)

So true Jon!

Who do you blame for having rainy weekend leaving us gameless? Used to have 2-3 practices a week but place where we practice indoor got messed up as a guy skied a delivery hitting sprinkler and damaging the whole indoor nets lol.

Thanks for your words though I appreciate it :)
