Broken thumb?
« on: May 20, 2011, 09:26:24 AM »

keeping last night, went to catch a top edge that was probably a little out of reach after a bit of a sprint. Put in the full length dive even though i probably wasnt ever going to get there and landed awkwardly on my RH thumb. Had to bat afterwards. Happy to get 59 not out but everytime i drove the ball or didnt quite get it out the middle it Hurts like hell and have to take the hand off the bat. red swollen and very tender to touch on the bottom joint of my thumb (nearest wrist) got 2 big games this weekend and as im playing pretty well id like to keep going. any tips for support etc without going to A&E

Go to A & E mate - could end up making it worse and missing the majority of the season!!!

Had a double break of my thumb last year after taking one on the hand...

You'll know if its a serious break, I don't think you would have been able to hold a bat. I felt sick and the pain was really very nasty! It took me ~7 or 8 weeks before I was playing again and tbh that was a bit early, you lose functionalitly through lack of use.

As for support, They can splint it with a metal rod in a mini-cast. If you still think its broken, I too reccomend A+E. They were swift with me. Even if they just send you for an x-ray and then confirm there's no break, its worth knowing. If it is a break, do not play. You'll certainly wreck your season and there's always the possibility of perma-damage! One thing you will notice with a broken thumb is exactly HOW much one uses their thumb in everyday life!

Sounds as though best case is you dislocated it and it jumped back, which would stress the joint and cause it to balloon, and worst case is a break. I'd get myself to A&E and get it seen. Not worth worrying about 2 big games if they are the last two you ever play.

We are not doctors, even if we were we could not accurately assess your injury.

Get to hospital.

thanks guys,

was hoping to avoid that option for the time being and see how it goes but i guess i gotta bite the bullet and potentially miss a few games before it gets worse and i miss the season

if your plying make sure you strap it correctly, incorrect strapping will do you more damage than no strapping at all!

Mate go to hospital and get it checked out.... Even if its a bad sprain you will have to rest it up, a small sacrifice when you consider if you do any serious damage over the next couple of games you could well be out for the season! we are still in May bud! as a fellow keeper I know we get knocks and play on but generally if it is an awkward fall then you need to get it seen to mate......best of luck!
