Spikes!
« on: June 30, 2011, 06:14:46 PM »

Evening chaps, bit of a question here. I'm a spinner, fairly agile fielder, and a lower order batsman. I'm looking for some spikes that will feel light on my feet, as I currently have these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120734606023#ht_1054wt_1270 (don't judge me, they were £15 from intersport!) and I'm looking for an upgrade, because they feel like I've got lead on my feet, and I don't like it! I was looking in particular at some of the asics range, maybe the gel-advances? I'd like someone to give me some advice on this!
Cheers lads,
Tumo.

Mitre spikes used to be quite good - Warne used them for quite a while.

My opinions on spikes are as follows:
Adidas - most comfortable, but have holes in the sole so your feet get wet in damp conditions
Puma - really good, but the thread on the spikes go quite easily, so hard to change them
Asics - fantastic reputation, but I've found them a bit narrow in the past. (though I've heard this might have changed)

It's all down to personal preference really - get yourself to a sports shop (CoJo's in Louth?) and get some tried on!

My last 3 pairs have been asics and have had adidas in the past. Adidas were very comfortable and fairly light - I still have a pair of 22 yds AR for when the ground is very hard and dry. My main boots are Asics Gel Advance 3's and they feel like slippers. They are so light and extremely comfortable so high end asics would be my recommendation depending on your budget.

I bought some Nike spikes a while back and they are really nice, have had Puma and Asics before but these feel a lot better made. I'm a spinner as well and struggled to find spikes that gave me good grip but still allowed me to pivot on my front foot at the point of delivery, so far these Nike shoes seem to be doing the job nicely...

It's really all about comfort though, try some on, the Asics can be a bit narrow, the Puma's can be a bit wide and not give great support across the top of your foot and the Nikes aren't that soft and probably need more wearing in than the other two brands.

Thanks for the advice lads, I'm a bit in the middle of nowhere regarding cricket shops so I'll get myself down to Owzat or something to try stuff on, I'm a bit on the wide side as far as feet-size goes, so I'll have a look at all the options. I've always found asics to be quite wide, and adidas a bit more narrow, but that was only trainers, so I'll see. It's my 21st soon, and I've got bonds coming in worth a few quid so I've got a fairly decent budget!

I use Asics Gel Advance 2 from last year mate, and I have wide feet but they are brilliant and so comfy. I bat and keep in them and have no problems. Also use the Adidas AR's for when we play on astro and they are comfy as well.

I had a pair of gel advance 3s the adidas 22 yard and the Nike openers, and the Nike in my opinion were easily the best!
