A ponderance for a (brave) batmaker to tackle. Junior Bats.

It is fair I think to say that most makers, whether small bespoke firms or mass producers, normally claim that their junior bats are made with the same attention as senior bats.

Why then, are junior bats so very much cheaper?

For no other reason than it is an example I can remember, I saw a well known brand selling an adult bat for £150, yet the exact same bat but in Harrow was only £50.

I realise you can probably squeeze more bats out of a tree with the juniors, but surely the time to manufacture is similar?

So, why the massive price difference that we see today?

Simply put, the majority are imported.

Makes sense.

As it happens, the example I mentioned was your (former) lots low grade model. I was alomst tempted to but the harrow. :)

£50 would be the Kashmir model in that case.

Basically the market has a price that they will accept for bats.

In simple terms.
Snrs
Beginners £100-£140 (low grade, bleached)
Average club players won't pay much more than £200 (G2)
Top players and bat geeks £300ish (G1)
Jnrs
Beginners <£50 (kashmir, bleached EW)
Average players £70-£90
Top players £120ish

Production is then planned to hit those price points, using India, South Africa and getting the best out of your willow where needed

Ahh ok, that I didn't know, so EW for the full size and kashmir for the junior in the same grade? That explains the rather extreme price difference.

If the prices are litteraly that different then the bat must be imported.

But if a batmaker sells his bats for 250 and a jnr one for 170, he will do this because it's a great way of getting someone into the brand.  That kid may well grow up to buy his adult bats from the same batmaker as a result.
