Trigger movement to spinners
« on: July 02, 2013, 08:35:44 PM »

Hi all,

I'm trying to adopt a trigger movement to spinners to get my front foot moving. What trigger should I use, at the moment i jus point my front foot towards the bowler as my trigger movement.

Cheers

I use the forward press against spin. A small step forward as the bowler bowls the ball. It works quite well for me.

I find it makes it easier to skip down the wicket or to just rock back and cut. It's not complicated either.

Just be careful that you "press" and do not lunge and find yourself planting the front foot, otherwise you'll find it very hard to move down the pitch and rock back.

All I do is move my foot about 6 inches with my foot pointing down the wicket, with my weight passing through my toe, as the bowler passes the umpire, so I am perfectly still when the ball is bowled

On the topic of spin I find to many try and either come down and play off the front foot with spinners

Nothin wrong sometimes using the crease and playing off the back foot.

Triggers I have to be honest not a fan especially against spin

I don't trigger. I wait and play the ball on merit.

Cost me Sunday as I went back to a half tracker, and it pea rolled onto middle stump. Doh.

Excellent article by Steve James here on trigger movements against spin bowling.

that extract was also in the telegraph and he explains the need to be "early for the bus" so you can get into a better position and play with softer hands.

if you do take this approach, take some time to practice it.

Interesting article. This bit made me chuckle though

Quote
In the old days batsmen were taught to stand still before the ball was bowled. And there are some players who still do that. But the truth is, however unpalatable it may be for the old-timers, that was advice dispensed in an age when all play was conducted at a slower pace

Not entirely sure you can say with any certainty that the older generation of fast bowlers were slower pace, and therefore any less worthy of adopting a trigger?

if you look at some of the older footage, players did have trigger movements - Steve hasn't done his homework - but it was done instinctively without the same coaching.

I definitely don't believe that bowlers were slower in the past than they are now. You ask Don Bradman if Harold Larwood (for example) was medium fast or just plan rapid...
