Finished 1st attempt
« on: November 19, 2011, 04:42:27 PM »

Here is my completed 1st attempt. It's taken me a few hours over a number of Saturdays - it's nothing like what I had intended although I am pleased with it for a first go.

Areas I struggled with were the spine (keeping it straight!!!) and blending the shoulders into the handle. I also have sore hands after binding so need to think of less labour intensive way of doing it!

Grade 2. Weight is 2.12 approx double gripped (my scales aren't great) 33mm edges and 55mm spine approx, no concaving, large oval handle. Picks-up lighter than it's dead weight at around 2.10.

Here are the pics, any comments (good or bad)/advice/help welcome!

The shape looks good. The splice area looks very thin. How solid is it?

marvellous effort. that is a nice shape I agree the splice and shoulders look a little thin, but regardless I really like the shape.

Looks like the laver ultra. Bottom toe corners and splice area look a little thin as mentioned b4 but a great effort for a 1st attemp.

Thanks Tim. Thick enough.....I hope. It's about 40mm thick at the top of the splice where it meets the handle. It feels substantial enough but I suppose I'll find out when it gets used!

Thanks guys. I agree that the toe and splice are a little thin. The toe is definitely thinner than I had wanted but I had to loose some weight there and at the splice to get the weight down as I wanted as much wood as possible in the sweetspot area (and I didn't have anything to concave with).

I have a convex spokeshave now and another G2 cleft so will be doing something different with that one
